The moisturizers discussed on this page are heavier products that I have not found to work very well under makeup and thus seem best suited for bedtime use.

They contain substantial amounts of natural fragrance that may not appeal to everyone, in most cases from essential oils or other heavily processed botanicals.

For those who want even more moisturizing benefits than these creams provide, I suggest mixing them with a few drops of a good face oil.

Alpyn Beauty Vitamin C Brightening Bounce Cream – $49

Living Clean Rating: 8 out of 10

Performance Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Ingredients Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Lisa Irritation Level: Very Mild

Processed Fragrance: Orange peel Oil, Lavender Oil, Jasmine Oil, Citral, Limonene, Linalool, Eugenol

Silicone Level: None

Container Type: Glass

The description of this product on the Alpyn Beauty website states, “What is a bounce cream? A moisturizer with a trampoline-like texture and over 50% organic aloe, to lock-in hydration and boost elasticity. Where wildcrafted meets clinical, this groundbreaking bounce cream springs into action with three forms of clinically proven vitamin C and the polyphenol power of wild chokecherry to deliver visible brightening and skin-smoothing benefits. A base of organic aloe binds lasting moisture to the skin so it feels deeply and comfortably hydrated—and bouncy.”

Although I have done well with several other Alpyn Beauty products, this is one has seemed to be a little irritating to my skin.

It contains a variety of essential oils and other processed natural fragrances, in addition to benzyl benzoate and benzyl alcohol.

The cream also has an odd sticky texture that has remained quite tacky on my skin for many hours.

I am having a hard time imagining using this during the day, due to the texture of the product as well as the scent.

However, I do feel that the product has some nice moisturizing benefits and that I would continue to use it if the added ingredients were not irritating to my skin.

Those who have skin that is less bothered by processed fragrance might do well with it, therefore.

Aveda Tulasara Firming Sleeping Masque – $71

Living Clean Rating: 7 out of 10

Performance Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Ingredients Rating: 3 out of 5 stars (3 / 5)

Lisa Irritation Level: Very Mild

Processed Fragrance: Natural fragrance, Farnesol, Linalool, Citronellol, Citral, Limonene, Geraniol

Silicone Level: Moderate

The Aveda website states about this product, “Help support skin overnight, with our 97% naturally-derived Firming Sleeping Masque. While you sleep, a powerful peptide and Vitamin C help boost skin’s natural production of collagen for visibly lifted, firmer feeling skin. Turmeric and Licorice root extract help visibly brighten dull skin, while plant hydrators help deliver immediate moisture. From the first night, skin looks glowing and refreshed. After four weeks of use, see visibly sculpted skin, with diminished fine lines. After eight weeks of use, see a visible improvement in wrinkles and experience firmer feeling, more lifted looking skin. Turmeric and Molasses extract help visibly brighten dull skin. A peptide + Vitamin C help skin boost its own natural production of collagen for visibly lifted, firmer feeling skin while minimizing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Strengthens skin’s moisture barrier with nourishing Cupuacu seed butter and certified organic Shea Butter.”

This was one of the first products I tried when I decided to start taking better care of my skin and so I got a chance to observe that it really did make a very big difference for me compared to not using much skincare at all.

The product seems to be quite moisturizing and to include a wide array of botanical ingredients that seem to have the potential of being good for my skin.

In addition, like the Aveda Tulasara eye cream (which is one of my favorites), this product contains caffeine, which I think is helpful in reducing facial puffiness.

Unfortunately, this product also includes a variety of additional ingredients that EWG suggests are problematic and that I do think  have the potential of irritating the skin.

In addition, the product has a very strong floral/citrus scent that – though it is derived entirely from natural ingredients – I would prefer that the company had omitted.

I feel like this product is right on the borderline in terms of what my facial skin can tolerate, but nonetheless used it for quite a while on my face because I felt that the benefits were outweighing the drawbacks.

Eventually, though, I found some gentler products that seemed to work well on my face and didn’t feel that using this one was as necessary anymore.

I ended up using the remainder of the jar on the less delicate skin on my neck and chest, and I feel that area has looked considerably nicer as a result.

I wish that Aveda would release a cleaner and unscented version of this product since I think that it might become a real favorite of mine if they did.

Aveda Tulasara Renewing Radiance Creme – $66

Living Clean Rating: 6 out of 10

Performance Rating: 3 out of 5 stars (3 / 5)

Ingredients Rating: 3 out of 5 stars (3 / 5)

Lisa Irritation Level: Very Mild

Processed Fragrance: Natural fragrance, Farnesol, Linalool, Citronellol, Citral, Limonene, Geraniol

Silicone Level: Low

The description of this product on the Aveda website states, “97% naturally derived, cruelty-free facial moisturizer that instantly infuses skin with a radiant glow, visibly smooths fine lines, and helps strengthen skin’s defenses against environmental aggressors. Vitamin C + naturally derived luminizers infuse skin with an instant, radiant glow. Over time, licorice root and molasses help to visibly brighten dull skin, reducing the appearance of dark spots and evening the look of skin tone. Nourishing hydrators instantly moisturize and smooth fine, dry lines while sigesbeckia and a bio-peptide help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Antioxidants derived from rice bran, vitamin E and ginger help strengthen your skin’s defense against environmental aggressors.”

This product seems to me quite similar to the Aveda Tulasara sleeping mask (discussed above), except that this one is a little less rich and has a very runny rather than a creamy texture.

The product is actually so thin that I usually end up pouring a little of it into my palm rather than trying to scoop it out with my fingers. Why the product is packaged in a jar rather than a pump is something that I do not understand.

While this product seems to contain a variety of ingredients that are helpful for my skin, some of the other ingredients – especially the fragrance-related ones – are more problematic.

As with the sleeping mask, I eventually concluded that this cream was not optimal for my face and then used the rest of the jar on my neck and chest.

If I were going to buy one of the Aveda Tulasara creams again, I definitely would choose the sleeping mask over this one since it is less messy to use and also may be more effective.

Evolve Daily Renew Face Cream – $21

Living Clean Rating: 8 out of 10

Performance Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Ingredients Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Lisa Irritation Level: None

Fragrance Ingredients: Natural Fragrance

Silicone Level: None

The description of this reasonably priced cream reads, “Evolve Organic Beauty Daily Renew Face Cream moisturizes normal to dry skin with a blend of pure organic oils. Argan oil nourishes while natural hyaluronic acid helps to soothe and hydrate. This natural face cream is delicately fragranced with a soothing hypoallergenic vanilla & coconut natural fragrance.”

The product is made in England and contains mostly oil-based moisturizers and glycerin, with just a bit of sodium hyaluronate down pretty far on the ingredients list.

It also contains a quite strong scent of coconut and vanilla (listed in the ingredients as “natural fragrance”). I do not find the smell to be unpleasant at all but it definitely is distinct.

Although this is supposed to be a day cream, I have not found that it has worked well for me for that since it does not provide much of the tacky-type feeling that I think serves as a good base for makeup.

It has worked better as a light night cream, such as one that I might wear during the summer months.

While I don’t feel that it has irritated my skin at all, I haven’t liked it nearly as much as some of the other creams that I have tried.

I’ve ended up using it more as a body cream, especially on my arms, and think that it has been terrific – though rather expensive – for that purpose.

Fresh Floral Recovery Calming Mask – $68

Living Clean Rating: 6 out of 10

Performance Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Ingredients Rating: 2 out of 5 stars (2 / 5)

Processed Fragrance: Fragrance

The description of this product reads, “This dermatologist-tested overnight face mask is powered by floral extracts—passionflower, cornflower, cherry blossom, and peony—to calm and reduce the look of redness on sensitive skin. Formulated with vitamin C and squalane to brighten and smooth, this overnight face mask envelops skin with a cocooning experience. Calms sensitive skin by reducing visible redness, uneven skin tone & rough texture.”

I’ve tried several skincare products by Fresh and feel that this is the best of everything that I have tried so far.

Although it includes some kind of unspecified fragrance – and although it’s my understanding that Fresh perfumes all include synthetic fragrance ingredients – the scent seems really mild and unobjectionable to me.

While I’m not sure that I feel good enough about this product that I would want to use it on a regular basis, it does offer some useful hydration and has not caused anything more than very slight irritation on the occasions that I have used it.

The main issue that I have is that I feel like this is a quite expensive product and that the money that I would need to spend purchasing it could be put to much better use on other skincare products that would be more helpful to my skin.

I do think it’s not too bad compared to the majority of the skincare products sold at Sephora stores or similar mainstream beauty retailers though.

Living Clean Rating: 8 out of 10

Performance Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Lisa Irritation Level: Very Mild

Processed Fragrance: Lavandula Hybrida Oil, Siberian Fir Oil, Patchouli Oil, Lemongrass Oil, Rose Geranium Oil, Roman Chamomile Oil, Citronellol, Geraniol, Limonene, Linalool

Silicone Level: Moderate

The description of this product on the Honest website reads, “A face cream infused with moisture-rich seed oils to soften + condition skin. Made with Daikon Radish Seed Oil + Baobab Seed Oil + Shea Butter. Works for all skin types.”

This seems to be Honest’s version of a traditional night cream, with a heavier consistency than most of their other moisturizers as well as a much stronger all-natural fragrance.

Several essential oils are used in the product, including lavender, Siberian fir, patchouli, lemongrass, rose geranium, and Roman chamomile.

Linalool, citronellol, geraniol and limonene (processed derivatives of botanical ingredients) also are included.

The smell is pretty noticeable and I am not crazy about it (probably due to the inclusion of the rose geranium and chamomile, both of which I dislike).

I felt like this product was slightly irritating to my facial skin and so ended up using most of the bottle on my neck and arms.

I imagine that it would work fine as a night cream for those who do not have skin that as delicate as mine, though.

This is a rather thick and hydrating cream that has worked quite well on my skin.

This has been surprising since the main ingredients consist mostly of things (such as hydrogenated vegetable oil, synthetic oils, and shea butter) that I wouldn’t have expected would have been that good for my skin.

The product also includes some fragrance ingredients – including orange peel oil, grapefruit peel oil, and limonene – that I would have guessed might be irritating for my skin.

I don’t feel that this cream has been irritating to my delicate facial skin at all though, and the moisture that it has delivered has been quite welcome during the dry winter months.

I don’t really understand why my face was not irritated by the essential oils in this product and don’t want to suggest that it will be fine for others who have issues with fragrance in skincare.

I would buy this product again, though.

I have done quite well with this rich cream, which contains several different forms of Vitamin C as well as a number of different botanicals.

Of all the Vitamin C products that I have tried so far, this one seems to be the best. The fact that the Vitamin C is part of a cream rather than in more concentrated form in a serum seems like it might be good for my delicate skin.

This night cream is also quite hydrating and generally has made my skin feel good.

The cream has a pretty strong fruity/flowery type smell that made me fear that I was going to react to it. My skin actually seems to really like it, though.

Although I really like the smell of jasmine oil, I’m not sure that that is what I am smelling most in this cream. I do feel like the fragrance of the product is pleasant though.

The product comes with a little wooden spoon, apparently for hygiene reasons. I found that spoon a little hard to keep clean and have been using my Jones Road Spatula instead.

The fact that the first ingredient (other than water) is safflower oil made me wonder how long it would take before the product went rancid, but it seemed to continue to be fine even six months after I opened it.

Maybe all the Vitamin C as well as the jasmine oil in the product helped to preserve it.

True Botanicals Renew Chebula Extreme Cream – $110

Lisa Irritation Level: Very Mild

Processed Fragrance: Juniperus Virginiana Oil, Ylang Ylang Flower Oil, Amyris Balsamifera Bark Oil, Juniperus Mexicana Schiede, Lavender Oil, Limonene, Linalool.

Silicone Level: None

The description of this product reads, “The Powerful, Pink Goop that’s Clinically Proven to Transform Your Skin. Chebula powers this first-of-its-kind formula that is clinically proven to deeply moisturize and fight five signs of aging. Chebula – a breakthrough, cascading antioxidant that targets five signs of aging – offers broad spectrum anti-aging protection. Chebula Extreme Cream gives your skin everything it needs to look smooth, soft, dewy, and supple. In third party studies, 96% of subjects said their skin felt more resilient after just 28 days thanks to antioxidants and breathable occlusives that help to strengthen the skin barrier, which is the key to gorgeous, glowy skin.”

I was skeptical about this product due to the fragrance ingredients in it, but I was able to get a sample jar and so gave it a try.

Although the product does not have a very strong scent, it was mildly irritating to my face in a way that I think is attributable to the fragrance.

That is too bad since otherwise it is a rich, moisturizng cream that I would be inclined to buy and use during the dry winter months.

UpCircle Face Moisturizer with Argan Powder – $24

Living Clean Rating: 7 out of 10

Performance Rating: 3 out of 5 stars (3 / 5)

Ingredients Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Lisa Irritation Level: Very Mild

Processed Fragrance: Blood Orange Oil, Lemon Oil, Frankincense Oil, Clary Sage Oil, Bitter Orange Leaf Oil, Limonene, Linalool, Citral.

Silicone Level: None

The copy for this product describes it as, “A deeply hydrating, fast-absorbing face cream to nourish and brighten the skin. Reused, repurposed, reloved: This face cream is made with finely-ground powder of discarded argan shells, a natural by-product of the argan oil industry and rich in antioxidant Vitamin E. The moisturizer is suitable for all skin types. The argan shell powder is combined with skin-soothing cocoa butter, aloe vera and blood orange.”

This product contains the main ingredients of sunflower seed oil, shea butter and coconut oil, along with a much smaller amount of the argan shells.

The product contains quite a lot of essential oils and other processed botanical-based fragrances, which I am guessing are used to keep the sunflower seed oil and other ingredients from going rancid as quickly as well as for the scent.

I found this product to be a little irritating to my skin, but this may just have been due to the botanical fragrance ingredients which some people may be able to tolerate.

The cream does get pretty good user reviews anyway.

Trash Can

Aveda Botanical Kinetics Intense Hydrating Rich Cream ($46): Although I did not put this cream anywhere near my eyes, it nonetheless caused them to water so badly that I had to get up in the middle of the night to take a shower to get it to stop. It also annoyed my skin to the point that I haven’t wanted to use it as a body lotion either. EWG gives this product a 7 (red), flagging the following ingredients as potentially problematic: dimethicone (3), salicylic acid (3), PEG-100 stearate (3), sodium hydroxide (4), natural fragrance (8), farnesol (4), linalool (3), citronellol (4), citral (5), limonene (5), benzyl benzoate (5), and geraniol (5).

Bare Minerals Skinlongevity Night Treatment ($42): My experience with the Bare Minerals Skinlongevity Serum is that while it may be very slightly irritating to my skin, the benefits of the product have been so positive that it has been worth using it for me. The Skinlongevity Night Treatment, on the other hand, seems to be much more irritating as well as less helpful, and therefore not something that I am inclined to use even on my body. The natural fragrance also is overly strong for my preference. EWG gives this product a 5 (yellow), citing the following ingredients as problematic: natural fragrance (8), limonene (5), geraniol (5), citral (5), benzyl alcohol (4), sodium metabisulfite (4), phenoxyethanol (4), dimethicone (3), tocopheryl acetate (3), linalool (3), and sodium benzoate (3).

A Note From Lisa

Products that I have tried or researched and that I have not found to be acceptable from a toxicity standpoint have been omitted entirely from the discussions on this website.
