By Lisa Petrison

Alpha hydroxy acids (AHA’s) exfoliate dead skin cells, allowing the skin to look more radiant and to absorb moisturizers better. They also are thought to help to increase collagen production and to reduce the appearance of sun damage and wrinkles.

While beta hydroxy acids (BHA’s) like salicylic acid penetrate deeper into the skin and work especially well on oilier skin with acne issues, ALA’s are thought to be especially helpful for drier and aging skin.

Although my own skin is very sensitive, I seem to do well with AHA’s as long as they are not too strong and I do not use them too often. I usually use some form of them every several days.

The products that include AHA’s that I have used myself and that are discussed here include facial cleansers, masks and serums.

Because serums are left on the skin for longer, they can provide a more intensive treatment than facial cleansers or masks.

The strength and type of the AHA in the product as well as how often the product is used also can affect the strength of the treatment.

Those with sensitive skin may want to start with milder treatments and then work their way up to stronger ones if tolerated.

The Performance Ratings on this page describe my own experiences with the products and therefore may be particularly relevant for those who have skin similar to mine (dry and sensitive with a delicate skin barrier).

Those with other kinds of skin issues may find that different products than the ones that I have rated highly work best for them.

Alpyn Beauty Creamy Bubbling Cleanser – $36

♣ Living Clean Superstar

Overall Rating: 5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

Performance Rating: 5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

Ingredients Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Lisa Irritation Level: None

Processed Fragrance: Lavender oil, Orange oil

Exfoliants: Lactobacillus/Pomegranate Fruit Ferment Extract, Glycolic Acid, Lactic Acid, Ascorbic Acid

Product Type: Cleanser

The website copy for this product reads, “This creamy, bubbling, hydrating cleanser leaves skin feeling clean and comfortable—not dry and tight. It effortlessly removes makeup and dirt, refines pores, reduces the look of oily skin and gently exfoliates dead skin cells with the help of papaya enzymes and AHAs. Formulated without phenoxyethanol, parabens, formaldehyde donors, MEA/DEA/TEA, palm ingredients, sulfates, synthetic dyes, colors, fragrance, phthalates, petrochemicals, PEG’s/ PPG’s, metallic aluminum, triclosan, talc, mineral oil, petrolatum, gluten, or fragrance.”

I have found that this product works well for me as a cleanser, but the reason that I may end up buying it again is because I like the idea of giving my skin small amounts of AHA exposure on a regular basis.

How much the hydroxy acids help, I’m not sure. My skin does seem to do well with this cleanser, though.

I usually use it every couple of days, alternating with cream cleansers.

The product includes benzyl alcohol (probably as a preservative), glycolic acid and lactic acid (apparently as exfoliators), and orange oil (likely as a preservative and for the fragrance).

It also includes sodium hyaluronate (a hydrator), various fruit extracts (for exfoliation), and small amounts of other botanicals (some of them apparently wildcrafted from the area near Jackson Hole, Wyoming).

Despite the use of benzyl alcohol and orange oil, I have found this product to be non-irritating and non-drying for my skin.

The natural fruity/flowery fragrance is noticeable, but I have found it to be pleasant.

Alpyn Beauty Wild Huckleberry 8-Acid Polishing Peel – $56

♣ Living Clean Superstar

Overall Rating: 5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

Performance Rating: 5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

Ingredients Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Lisa Irritation Level: None

Processed Fragrance: None

Exfoliants: White Willow Bark Extract, Azelaic Acid, Ferulic Acid, Lactobacillus/Pumpkin Ferment Extract, Lactobacillus/Capsicum Frutescens Fruit Ferment Extract, Lactic Acid, Glycolic Acid,  Citric Acid, Tartaric Acid (DL-), Malic Acid

Product Type: Mask

The description of this product reads, “A skin-resurfacing peel powered by 8 natural acids, bamboo powder and vitamin C to help refine pores, even texture and visibly brighten—in minutes. 5 minutes to your glowiest skin. This skin-transforming peel visibly smooths texture and brightens the complexion using a double exfoliation method. Eight naturally-derived acids (salicylic, citric, malic, tartaric, glycolic, azelaic, ferulic and lactic acids) gently refine the look of skin by dissolving dead surface cells, while fresh bamboo powder physically exfoliates to reveal a visibly brighter glow. Apply a thin layer to clean, dry skin, avoiding eye area, and leave on for 5 minutes. For added polish, wet hands and massage in a circular motion before rinsing clean. Gentle enough to use daily, AM or PM.”

The inclusion of salicylic acid in this formula suggests that this product may be primarily designed for skin that is much less dry than mine.

However, I noted that the description also stated that the product could be useful for “aging concerns” and so decided to give the sample jar that I received a try on a few occasions.

The formula seems to me pretty strong, but it did not dry out my skin too badly or cause any other problems.

It includes quite a few botanical ingredients with mild scents, but none of them are essential oils, heavily processed fragrances like linalool, or unspecified “fragrance” ingredients.

Although I like the concept of this product, I wouldn’t be inclined to buy it again since it does not seem to be specifically addressing my own skin issues.

Overall Rating: 5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

Performance Rating: 5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

Ingredients Rating: 5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

Lisa Irritation Level: None

Processed Fragrance: Roman chamomile flower oil

Exfoliants: Citric acid, Sodium citrate, Sodium ascorbate

Product Type: Serum

The description of this product reads, “The ultimate skin elixir — this serum brightens, hydrates, and helps tone aging skin. Brightens the appearance of skin tone with a concentrated dose of fruit, herb and plant-cell extracts. A dynamic blend of Kakadu plum and apple helps revive dull skin. Resveratrol-rich knotweed, plant-cell extracts and copper combine to help keep skin moist, plump and supple for an overall even-toned, luminous glow.”

I obtained a generous sample bottle of this product as a gift with purchase and so have been able to give it a good try.

I like the product a lot and feel that it has had a good effect on my skin, without irritating it.

The ingredient list looks good to me.

On the other hand, $240/oz. is an incredibly expensive product by anyone’s standards, I think.

I’m not sure that this product is that much better than its competitors that it would be worth it for me to spend this much money on it even if I were really well-off.

It does seem to be a good product though.

Product Type: Serum

The description of this product reads, “Get glowing with visible luminousity. This lightweight, fast-absorbing serum, powered by a fusion of snow lotus stem cells and plant-derived alpha hydroxy acids, instantly luminizes and dissolves surface cells to unveil radiant, smooth skin.”

I received a small sample of this product during its introduction and so gave it a try.

I found it to be irritating to my face in a way that other hydroxy acid formulas have not been.

The product includes some potentially problematic chemicals as well as quite a few natural fragrance ingredients that I wish that Aveda had omitted.

I’m not interested in trying this product again, therefore.

Product Type: Serum

The description of this product reads, “Featuring a proprietary multi-acid complex, this leave-on AHA/BHA peel improves skin texture and boosts clarity without irritation or over-drying. With glycolic, malic, and botanically derived lactic acid, the formula clears away dull surface cells, while arginine and essential fatty acids help soothe to reveal a brighter, healthier looking, renewed complexion.”

This product contains quite a few fragrance ingredients in addition to the hydroxy acids being used.

These include multiple kinds of citrus peel oil, limonene, citral, geraniol, citronellol, and linalool.

I received a small bottle of this product and so gave it a try on a few occasions.

I felt at the time that the product was just a bit strong for my skin, but now I am thinking that it is more likely that my skin was being slightly annoyed by the essential oils and other processed fragrances in the product.

I don’t think that this is probably the best product for me to use on a regular basis, therefore.

People who do better than I do with scented products may be fine with this one though.

Beekman 1802 Milk Wash Exfoliating Jelly Cleanser – $38

Overall Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Performance Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Ingredients Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Lisa Irritation Level: Very Mild

Processed Fragrance: None

Exfoliants: Lactic Acid, Glycolic Acid, Salicylic Acid, Tartaric Acid, Malic Acid, Bifida Ferment Lysate, Citric Acid

Product Type: Cleanser

The description of this product on the Beekman 1802 website reads, “Our AHA- and BHA-powered Milk Wash instantly transforms from a light jelly formula into a deep-cleansing milk to dissolve makeup, deeply purify, and exfoliate without abrasive scrubs. This multi-action cleanser helps draw out oil-based debris and is kind to your skin, leaving it feeling silky soft and moisturized, rather than dry and tight. Benefits: Removes makeup including water-resistant formulas. Deep cleanses and exfoliates for clearer, brighter skin. Helps control oily skin, clears pores, and resurfaces. This cleanser includes alpha hydroxy acids (AHA) and beta hydroxy acids (BHA), both of which are designed to exfoliate the skin.”

Although this product does not seem to be designed for people with dry skin, I obtained a small sample size bottle of the product and tried it out a few times.

I didn’t seem to have any problems with it irritating my skin.

However, it felt a little too drying to be ideal for my own very dry skin. I guess that was due to the salicylic acid.

The product has a slight scent from the variety of botanical ingredients used, but I did not find it to be unpleasant.

While I don’t think this is likely going to be an ideal choice for those with dry or aging skin, it does seem like a fairly clean product that may be okay for other people.

Lisa Irritation Level: None

Processed Fragrance: None

Exfoliants: Glycolic Acid, Sodium Hydroxide, Lactic Acid, Salicylic Acid, Tartaric Acid, Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Extract, Citric Acid

Product Type: Serum

The description of this product reads, “A high-tech AHA/BHA gel that resurfaces dull, congested skin by gently lifting away dead skin cells, dramatically improving the appearance of skin’s tone and texture, fine lines, wrinkles, and pores. Formulated with our dream team of glycolic, tartaric, lactic, citric, and salicylic acids and blended with raspberry extract and horse chestnut, T.L.C. Framboos curbs excess oiliness as it reveals greater clarity and luminosity. It also enhances the performance of other products by clearing the way for maximum absorption. T.L.C. Framboos sinks in easily and delivers an effective level of chemical exfoliation without harsh side effects, like dryness or sensitization. Go from a drab complexion to an absolutely luminous one, practically overnight. AHAs can be sensitizing if they’re not formulated properly. We added soothing plant extracts and formulated T.L.C. Framboos at an ideal pH of 3.5, which we believe is the key to an effective formulation. 100% free of essential oils, silicones, and fragrance.”

The founder of the company also added, “Teenage skin often needs help with unclogging pores, and mature skin, which doesn’t shed cells as quickly, needs a boost with cell turnover. Glycolic is amazingly effective at sloughing off dead cells, but I wanted Framboos to do more. I wanted to use a mix of AHAs and BHA so the acids would blend together and support each other, making them more effective and better tolerated by skin. Then I wanted to pack in as many antioxidants as we possibly could to help protect the acid mantle.”

I got a small container of this product and, as instructed by Drunk Elephant, mixed it into a “smoothie” with their Lala Retro moisturizing cream before applying it to my face.

Although the product contains salicylic acid, I think that worked pretty well for me and that my face felt nice after each of the half dozen or so times that I used the product.

The fact that this product does not have any processed fragrance ingredients in it does seem to be helpful in preventing irritation.

Although I had a good experience with this product, I wouldn’t buy it again since it does not seem to be intended for my skin type.

In addition, the $90 price tag seems very high to me.

HAN Skin Refining Serum – $28

♥ Lisa’s Choice

♣ Living Clean Superstar

Overall Rating: 5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

Performance Rating: 5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

Ingredients Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Lisa Irritation Level: None

Processed Fragrance: None

Exfoliants: Gluconolactone, Fruit Acid Complex (Bilberry, Sugarcane, Orange, Lemon, Sugar Maple), Willow Bark Extract

Product Type: Serum

The description of this product reads, “The Skin Refining Serum smooths and brightens dull skin to reveal healthier-looking skin. Natural fruit acids gently refine and smooth skin by dissolving dull cells, oil, and cellular debris. Hydrating and Skin Barrier Protection ingredients add a healthy burst of hydration that keeps skin soft and balanced. This lightweight serum has a delicate gel-lotion texture that glides smoothly and easily over skin, without leaving a residue or causing any irritation. Good for all skin types including dry, mature, sensitive, blemish-prone, combination and normal.”

This serum includes a number of quality oils (including squalane, plum seed oil and prickly pear oil), along with some apparently mild exfoliating acids.

I think that it has been quite gentle on my skin, providing exfoliating benefits at about the same level as some of the hydroxy acid cleansers that I have liked.

I haven’t noticed that it has caused any irritation even when I have used it several days in a row.

The scent is pleasant and very mild, I think.

I like the fact that it comes in a glass bottle.

I think that this is a nice product and would buy it again.

Mad Hippie AHA Exfoliating Peel – $35

Ingredients Rating: 5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

Lisa Irritation Level: None

Processed Fragrance: None

Exfoliants: Glycolic Acid, Malus Domestica Fruit Cell Culture Extract, Lactic Acid

Product Type: Serum

The description of this product reads, “Mother Nature & modern science unite to reduce the appearance of skin discoloration & wrinkles in our peptide + alpha hydroxy acid based serum. Shed dull skin and discoloration to reveal brighter, smoother looking skin. Contains sixteen actives including alpha hydroxy acids, apple stem cells, and Gigawhite. Apple stem cells, which come from the rare Swiss apple tree, have powerful antioxidant and skin rejuvenating properties. Gigawhite, a natural blend of six organically grown alpine plants, brightens and reduces the appearance of skin discoloration.”

I’ve used this product on a number of occasions and feel that it has been good for my skin.

However, I only use it once in a while and usually mix it with a moisturizer to dilute it.

It does seem pretty strong to me and so I feel like it could have a negative effect on my skin if I use it too frequently or at full-strength.

I am happy to see that while the product contains a few botanical extracts, there are no processed fragrances that could be irritating.

I think that the smell is fine and that the plain glass dropper bottle is an okay delivery system.

I might eventually buy this product again.

Marie Veronique Daily Exfoliating Cleanser – $39

Ingredients Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Processed Fragrance: Lavender oil, Rose geranium oil

Exfoliants: Leuconostoc/Radish Root Ferment Filtrate, Willow Bark Extract, Lactic Acid Extract

Product Type: Cleanser

The description of this product reads, “A gentle cleanser formulated with alpha and beta hydroxy acids and adzuki bean powder for dissolving and removing dead skin cells without risk of microtears. Beneficial for mature skin types seeking to reduce thickness of the epidermal layer while increasing production of natural ceramides to hold in moisture. Also works to eliminate pore-clogging factors for those with excess oil production while providing soothing qualities to reduce inflammation and risk of breakouts. Note: Although this cleanser contains exfoliation ingredients, it does not contain surfactants that remove the essential lipid layer or bactericidal preservatives, which kill beneficial bacteria. Great for use while transitioning away from more aggressive exfoliating cleansers and working to balance skin function. If your skin does not fall into the category of thick/oily, this cleanser should be used no more than once weekly.”

I have yet to try this product because it does not seem to be intended for my skin type.

Marie Veronique Intensive Repair Serum – $95

Ingredients Rating: 5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

Processed Fragrance: None

Exfoliants: Lactic Acid Extract, Willow Bark Extract, Leuconostoc/Radish Root Ferment Filtrate, Gluconolactone, Apple Cider Vinegar

Product Type: Serum

The description of this product reads, “This gel is an amazing refiner. It works strategically to strengthen the skin in a way that is supported and resilient against breakouts. Instead of stripping, drying and sterilizing the skin, client trials have shown a balance in oil production, a decrease in dry/inflammed skin from previous acne treatments, and decongested pores. When used as a supplement to OTC acne medications the transition period was minimal with little to no negative adjustment period. For her clients that do not have acne or excessive oil production, Kristina Holey recommends using this serum as an exfoliant (nightly 1-2x per week, or as a 20 minute gentle exfoliating mask). Clients reported a brightening effect, increase in product penetration and overall smooth texture. Reduces congestion, controls oil, and refines the complexion. Safely and effectively combats either chronic acne or sporadic breakouts. Works naturally by supplying missing micronutrients rather than assaulting skin with anti-microbials that may compromise microbiome integrity.”

I have yet to try this product but am looking forward to doing so soon.

Vintner’s Daughter Active Treatment Essence – $225

Overall Rating: 3 out of 5 stars (3 / 5)

Performance Rating: 3 out of 5 stars (3 / 5)

Ingredients Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Lisa Irritation Level: Mild

Processed Fragrance: None

Exfoliants: Acerola fruit extract, Bacillus ferment, Lactic acid, Apple cider vinegar, Sodium ascorbate, Sodium hydroxide

Product Type: Serum

The description of this product states, “Active Treatment Essence is a deeply hydrating formula that delivers radiance and renewal to all skin. At the heart of this essential hydration step is our proprietary Phyto Radiance Infusion, a 21-day process which begins with nutrient-rich, whole plants and, over the course of three weeks, gently infuses their powerful nourishment into our aqueous base. Amplifying the infusion is our Phyto Ferment, a 14-day proprietary process that facilitates nutrition absorption through enzymes for more resilient, healthy skin. With 70+ water-soluble nutrients and next generation plant actives, our formula reveals healthy-looking, radiant skin as well as supporting the performance of subsequent products. 70+ nutrients to renew and illuminate. Hydrating micro and mini hyaluronic acid. Brightening stabilized vitamin C. Micro-exfoliating plant acids and enzymes. Supportive plant stem cells. Free-radical fighting antioxidants. Balancing adaptogens. Beneficial enzymes. Suitable for all skin and daily AM and PM use. 100% natural ingredients and formulated without added sulphates, parabens, phthalates, synthetic fragrance, PEGs, or SLSs.”

Vintner’s Daughter is a small company making just two very expensive products – this treatment essence as well as a face oil.

I had heard of a number of celebrities and beauty professionals mention that they were regular users of the Vintner’s Daughter products and so decided to give them a try.

I purchased a small bottle of this product, along with a small bottle of the Vintner’s Daughter face oil, for a total cost of $160.

I found that this product was extremely strong and quite irritating to my skin, to the point that I had to discontinue the use of it almost immediately.

Although the description mentions “micro-exfoliating plant acids and enzymes,” I did not realize just from reading the description that this was in large part a strong chemical exfoliator that would have a major effect on my skin.

If I had realized that this product had such strong chemical exfoliation properties, I would have been much more cautious in terms of how I used it or not tried it at all.

The instructions for the product do not discuss this at all and instead just say that it is “suitable for all skin and daily AM and PM use.”

As it is, the combination of this product and the Vintner’s Daughter facial oil (which contains a very high concentration of lemon oil) seemed to act almost like a professional chemical peel on my skin, temporarily destroying my skin barrier and causing me to become ridiculously reactive to many other skincare products that I previously had been using without incident.

My skin did eventually recover, but it took several weeks and I did not notice that my skin ever ended up looking better than it did before I tried the Vintner’s Daughter products.

Although I have returned virtually no other products that I have purchased for this project even when they have not worked out for me, in this case the reaction was severe enough and the cost of the products was high enough that I did return them to the retailer (Goop) for a refund.

Based on my reading of the Vintner’s Daughter website, I don’t think that company ever takes back products purchased directly from them even if an adverse reaction occurs. Therefore, especially after my own experience with the product, I would not suggest that others buy directly from the company unless they already know that they can tolerate the products.

While I’m not sure that the Active Treatment Essence is stronger than some of the other hydroxy acid exfoliants that are discussed on this page, the fact that the company is not alerting customers that it may not be appropriate for everyone seems problematic to me.

The Active Botanical Serum (facial oil) seems more unusual in its ingredients list and is discussed on the Scented Facial Oils page of this website.

While I am not saying that the very trendy Vintner’s Daughter products are never helpful for anyone, my experience does suggest that they may not be very suitable for some people with sensitive or delicate skin and that probably everyone should proceed with a bit more caution than the directions suggest in terms of first trying them out.

About This Website

The Living Clean in a Dirty World shopping website is designed to provide guidance to those seeking out products that are relatively low in toxicity and that provide generally positive user experiences.

Although the skincare and makeup sections have a particular focus on products appropriate for women who are in their 40’s or beyond, the information provided may be useful for other people as well.

The products are curated by Lisa Petrison, who has been focused on helping people to improve their health by avoiding toxicity since 2008 and who heads the Paradigm Change organization.

Her Living Clean in a Dirty World blog site discusses a variety of topics of relevance to those who are working to pursue a more natural lifestyle with less exposure to harmful toxicity.

Lisa is the author of several books, including A Beginner’s Guide to Mold Avoidance (co-written with Erik Johnson).

She also runs the Paradigm Change website (focusing on issues related to toxic mold illness) and the Mold Avoiders Facebook group (designed for the discussion of all topics of interest to those pursuing the mold avoidance approach described in the “Beginner’s Guide” book).

Lisa was born in August 1964 and has yet to try cosmetic surgery, Botox or other cosmetic treatments requiring interactions with a physician, or beauty products containing retinoids.

A Note From Lisa

Products that I have tried or researched and that I have not found to be acceptable from a toxicity standpoint have been omitted entirely from the discussions on this website.

However, since a goal of this project is to introduce people to a range of options in terms of price and functionality, some products discussed on this site include ingredients that may not be appropriate for everyone.

It’s my hope that all individuals making their way to this site will find at least a few options from each product category that meet all of their own needs and wants from a variety of perspectives.

The vast majority of cosmetics marketers now offer affiliate programs in which Internet content creators may earn commissions if people who are referred to the companies’ sites by clicking on links end up making purchases.

I participate in quite a few individual affiliate programs as well as in the Sovrn/Viglinks program (which automatically converts regular links into revenue-generating links).
