By Lisa Petrison

This page lists liquid and soft cream foundations that claim to offer at least medium coverage and that do not contain SPF.

While at one time in my life I wore liquid foundation on a daily basis, more recently I have often been relying just on stick foundations or stick concealers to give me some spot coverage even when going out.

This especially has been the case since I started working on this project, since my focus on good skincare and careful avoidance of irritating ingredients has improved my skin to the point that I no longer have too much to cover up.

When I do use liquid foundation, I usually choose one without sunscreens or silicones because I have found that those ingredients have negative effects on my skin.

While products that do not use silicone do seem to be better for my skin, I also have found that many of them have performance issues, including making my wrinkles look worse and not holding up very well on my face.

Fortunately, over the past year or two, many new foundations with cleaner ingredients have been introduced to the marketplace, and some of these have performed very well for me.

Some also have skincare ingredients that feel good on my face and that provide a healthy-looking glow, in addition to covering imperfections.

Note, though, that the oil-based foundations listed here perform differently than the more commonly used water-based ones do.

In particular, oil-based foundations tend be less appropriate for oily skin; to not work very well in warm weather (since they have a tendency to liquify and then to mix with any perspiration that may be present on the face); and to work only with non-silicone primers (since they just slide off ones that contain silicones).

In addition, most people find that they do better using less moisturizer or no moisturizer when using oil-based foundations.

Personally, although I really like oil-based or hybrid foundations during the winter months when my face is dry, I have given up on using them at all when the weather is any warmer than about 70 degrees or on any occasions (such as exercise) when I expect to be sweating.

Gel suspensions, water-based foundations or stick foundations tend to work much better for me during those times.

100% Pure Fruit Pigmented Cream Foundation – $48

Foundation Type: Oil-Based

Coverage Level: Medium/Full

The description of this product reads, “Creamy fruit pigmented foundation with rich avocado butter, silky pomegranate oil, and calming botanicals. Offers medium-full coverage and a satin finish.”

This is an expensive foundation that I hoped would work well on my skin because it is cream-based.

I applied it according to the instructions, by dabbing a little bit of the cream on my face and then using a damp beauty sponge to blend it in.

Unfortunately, this product seemed to be worse in terms of emphasizing or even creating skin imperfections than pretty much any other product that I have tried.

Wrinkles that I had never noticed before suddenly appeared. It also looked like my pores were an issue for me (even though I have never noticed a problem with them at all when not wearing any makeup).

I don’t quite understand why that would be, especially since many of the reviews on the 100% Pure site were positive. Maybe the product works better for younger women.

It’s very unfortunate the the product did not work well for me since it contains a variety of oils that are nice for my skin.

It also seems to be a really clean product, based both on the ingredient list and how it felt to me.

The product currently is available in seven shades.

I tried Creme (“fair with warm undertone”) and felt that the color was fine for me.

I tried a sample of this product and did not feel that it irritated my skin at all.

It went on quite thin; seemed on the matte side; and offered a good bit of coverage.

I woud like to give it a real try.

The description of this product on the Beautycounter website reads, “Breathable, buildable coverage with hyaluronic acid to visibly plump the skin. With 27 buildable shades, this weightless, long wearing, natural-looking foundation feels like a second skin. Our skin-loving formula delivers all-day hydration while hyaluronic acid helps retain essential moisture for a visibly plump, even appearance from first use—and smoother, healthier-looking skin with each application.”

Personally, I really like the way that my skin looks in this foundation. The finish is natural-looking but also refined, and the wrinkles on my face do not seem to look worse than when I am not wearing any foundation.

Quite a bit of coverage can be obtained with this foundation by putting thin layers onto the skin.

On the other hand, mixing it with some moisturizer can provide lighter coverage.

Although the product seems to contain a goodly amount of silicone, I agree with the product description that it is at least a little breathable.

I don’t feel that it has irritated my skin at all and actually does seem like it might be a little good for my skin.

Of the silicone-based products that I have tried so far, this is one of the ones that I like the most.

I might buy it again if I felt that I needed more coverage than I do now.

I have Shade 240 (“light with warm, neutral undertones”) and feel that it has been a good match for my skin.

Chantecaille Future Skin – $82

Ingredients Rating: 3 out of 5 stars (3 / 5)

Lisa Irritation Level: None

Processed Fragrance: None

Silicone Level: High

Coverage Level: Medium/Full

The description of this product reads, “An innovative oil-free gel foundation with a refreshing, lightweight texture and a unique formula with 60% water. Future Skin transfers moisture into the skin without the use of oil as an emulsifier. Made with reflective circular pigments that provide adjustable coverage (medium-to-full) and ease the appearance of flaws, it’s also loaded with natural botanicals including aloe, chamomile and arnica that calm irritation and soothe sensitive skin. Rosemary, green tea and rice bran help prevent environmentally caused oxidation. Crafted in Japan.”

Although this expensive foundation contains some ingredients that made me concerned that it would not be a good match for my skin, I have done fine with it in terms of lack of irritation.

I think that it looks very pretty on my face without emphasizing my wrinkles, with a natural finish that is only slightly dewy-looking.

Although the coverage level is listed as medium/full, I feel like I have been able to get a lighter coverage just by spreading the product around with my fingers.

It does seem to be pretty buildable for those who want more coverage, though.

The product contains several different kinds of silicone and thus is not something that I personally would want to use on a regular basis.

I do think that it looks very pretty on me and that it is a very nice product to wear on occasion though.

The product does contain several ingredients that are on Credo’s “dirty list,” including cyclopentasiloxane, PEG-400 and talc.

The preservatives phenoxyethanol and chlorphenesin also are used.

I hope that these preservatives at least will help the product to last for a long time, since it was expensive and I have only been using it occasionally.

I have the shade Camomile (“light with golden undertones”) in this product and feel that it has been okay for me.

Charlotte Tilbury Beautiful Skin – $46

Living Clean Rating: 7 out of 10

Ingredients Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Lisa Irritation Level: Mild

Processed Fragrance: Rose Oil

Silicone Level: High

Coverage Level: Medium

The description of this product on the Charlotte Tilbury website reads, “This medium coverage, hydrating foundation has been expertly formulated with skincare ingredients to combine instant glow and buildable coverage with long-term skincare benefits. With brightening Rose Complex and hydrating hyaluronic acid to improve the look of skin with each wear, my Beautiful Skin Foundation is the secret to your best, healthy looking skin day, every day!”

The product contains several different forms of silicone, with the only other ingredient listed as being of obvious concern being rose essential oil.

I received a sample of this and so gave it a try.

While the product went on thin and smoothly, with an attractive and natural-looking soft matte finish, I felt that the formula emphasized the texture of my skin (including my wrinkles) quite a lot.

The website uses photos of younger models with good skin, with the comment for each one of “Beautiful Before. Beautiful After.” And I would guess that that indeed, for those particular people, this foundation might help to enhance their attractiveness by adding a soft finish.

Based on my experience with it, this foundation seems less suited for those who are older or who have textural issues to their skin.

The product also irritated my face to a noticeable extent, with itching occurring for a couple of hours until I took it off. Whether the irritation was just due to the rose oil or to something else, I’m not sure.

Perhaps at some point I will try the foundation again over  primer, to see if that helps my skin to tolerate the product better.

I’m not that motivated to spend money to do that since this foundation does not look very good on me, though.

Exa High Fidelity Foundation – $38

♣ Living Clean Superstar

Living Clean Rating: 9 out of 10

Performance Rating: 5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

Ingredients Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Lisa Irritation Level: None

Processed Fragrance: Grapefruit Peel Oil

Silicone Level: None

Foundation Type: Water-Based

Coverage Level: Light/Medium/Full

The Credo website states: “Exa Beauty High Fidelity Foundation is a weightless vegan foundation that can be worn sheer to full coverage for a luminous glow that looks just like your skin on a really good skin day. Makeup meets skincare with a lightweight base of comforting aloe vera juice and plumping peach fruit extract to protect the skin’s barrier against environmental stressors. Protective microalgae actives, soothing maqui berry and hydrating hyaluronic acid team up with advanced pigment technology so that this foundation feels light and lasts long. This cruelty-free foundation is made with gluten-free ingredients, is safe for sensitive skin and approved by dermatologists.”

This product was introduced a couple of years ago and was one of the first cleaner foundations on the market that did not include silicones.

While I think at the time it was revolutionary, there now are quite a few silicone-free foundations with pretty clean ingredient lists that have worked somewhat better for me than this one.

The main issue that I see with it is that it emphasizes the textural issues on my face to a noticeable extent.

In addition to making the wrinkles in my eye area look worse, it draws attention to other lines on my face and to my pores (even though usually I do not consider those to be an issue at all for me).

On the plus side, the product seems to have not been irritating to my skin at all and also has a very nice semi-matte finish.

Since the product contains coffee seed extract, it may have some de-puffing and antioxidant benefits, though I have not specifically noticed that occurring.

I would say that the default for this foundation seems to be medium coverage, which could be easily built to something approaching full coverage.

To get what I would consider to be light coverage, I have to mix this foundation with moisturizer.

Although I don’t think this is a particularly good foundation for me, I think that it might be very helpful for those who do not have significant textural issues and who want a higher coverage level.

The foundation is available in 43 shades, with over half of them appropriate for people with darker skin tones.

I found it quite difficult to choose the right shade for this product based just on the information on the website and found consulting with an online Credo representative to be very helpful.

Based on a professional color outdoor photo of me, the consultant recommended the color Whit 500 (described on the website as “fair with neutral undertones”).

The color has been  okay for me, especially during the winter months.

The description of this product reads, “A medium buildable coverage, high-performance, weightless, clean foundation infused with our proprietary fermented arnica that helps reduce redness, helps even skin tone and protects from environmental stress. Suitable for all skin types including sensitive and acne-prone. HausTech Powered with 20+ skincare ingredients including our patent-pending Fermented Arnica. Its weightless, serum-like texture seamlessly blurs and smooths for a natural, luminous finish that wears all day. No slipping or caking. Foundation never felt (or looked) so good. Using the science of color theory, we obsessively formulated the perfect spectrum of 51 shades across 6 families based on your skin’s depth and undertones.”

This product (introduced by Haus Labs in Summer 2022) is made in Korea and seems to be designed to put a very thin layer of product on the skin.

It is available in a remarkable 51 shades and contains a variety of silicones (though none of these are the cyclic silicones that Credo believes to be especially concerning).

After becoming utterly confused by trying to figure out from the Haus Labs website which shade to get, I swatched many different shades in a Sephora store and then bought a bottle of the product.

Although I usually am not very enthusiastic about silicone-based foundations, this seems to be one of the better ones that I have tried in terms of it meeting my own needs and wants.

It provides some coverage while still looking like I was not wearing any foundation at all (and not emphasizing my wrinkles).

My skin seems to like this foundation and has not displayed any signs of being irritated by it.

Despite the large amount of silicone in it, I feel that this foundation has felt good on my skin even when I have been sweating as a result of exercise.

The product does adhere pretty tightly to my skin, but I feel that I have been able to remove it pretty thoroughly with a cleansing oil.

Note that while I like the way that my skin looks when I am wearing this foundation, I wouldn’t say that it is great at covering up imperfections such as redness around my nose.

I feel that a good concealer (such as the Jones Road Face Pencils) need to be used in conjunction with it in order to create a good look.

Another important thing to know about this foundation is that Haus Labs is using a similar shade system to MAC, where pink shades are classified as “warm” and yellow shades are classified as “cool.”

After spending a lot of time swatching shades, I concluded that the best shades for me are Shade 100 Light Neutral (“very light with soft peach undertones”) and Shade 110 Light Neutral (“very light with balanced undertones”). This was a bit of a surprise since I feel that my skin usually leans a bit yellow.

Oddly, despite the large number of shades offered, some people (especially those with very fair skin) complain that they have not been able to find a good match even when they have swatched many shades at Sephora.

While I think that it’s almost mandatory to swatch the product in person to get a good match (or to conclude that there is no good match), I will say that answering the questions on the Shade Finder section of the Haus Labs website did result in the recommendation of the same shade that seemed best in the store.

I wouldn’t count on it working for everyone though.

All in all, despite the challenges associated with this product, I think that it seems to be working out for me better than most foundations that I have tried and therefore may be worth some consideration.

Ilia True Skin Serum Foundation – $54

♣ Living Clean Superstar

Living Clean Rating: 9 out of 10

Performance Rating: 5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

Ingredients Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Lisa Irritation Level: None

Processed Fragrance: None

Silicone Level: Low

Coverage Level: Medium

This foundation is described on the Ilia website as “a weightless, medium-coverage foundation with a natural finish. This silky, breathable formula melts in and moves with you, seamlessly blending and blurring for skin that looks like skin. Potent skincare actives Niacinamide and Allantoin visibly improve skin with every wear, minimizing the look of pores, lines, redness, and uneven tone instantly and over time. Skin is left looking real and radiant—like you, just more polished.”

Although this product contains some dimethicone (silicone), it is listed as the eighth ingredient. This product thus does not seem to be nearly as silicone-heavy as many of the others listed on this page.

Perhaps because of this, I found this product to emphasize my wrinkles somewhat more than the Beautycounter Skin Twin, which seems to be otherwise quite similar.

The other obvious comparison products that I have tried are the Nars Light Reflecting Foundation and the Exa High Fidelity Foundation. These products do not contain any silicones and are listed on the Liquid Foundations page.

I think that this Ilia product looks better on my skin than either of those do, though perhaps it is just the small amount of silicone that makes the difference.

In any case, other than its tendency to make my wrinkles look somewhat worse, the Ilia True Skin foundation seems to be a nice product, providing a substantial amount of coverage, a moderate level of hydration, and a pretty finish.

If I wanted more coverage on a regular basis, this might be a good choice.

It is available in 30 shades. I have Malokai SF2.5 (“light with warm undertones”) and think that it is a pretty good match for my summer skin.

Lys Beauty Triple Fix Serum Foundation – $22

Ingredients Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Lisa Irritation Level: Very Mild

Foundation Type: Water-Based

Coverage Level: Light/Medium

The description of this product reads, “Satisfy your skincare and foundation fix at the same time with this must-have complexion hero that’s sure to become your skin’s best friend with customizable coverage and skincare benefits that promote visibly healthier-looking skin. Loaded with nourishing ingredients, like Ashwagandha, Hyaluronic Acid, Turmeric and Avocado Oil, this liquid serum foundation leaves behind an undetectable veil that enhances your skin’s natural beauty, making it suitable for everyday use.”

This foundation (introduced in 2021) offers a variety of shades at a reasonable price point.

I found it to provide a little more coverage than many of the other cleaner foundation products that I have tried.

Unfortunately, my skin does not seem to like this product very much. After a short period of time (such as within an hour or two), my skin has become itchy and uncomfortable enough that I have been eager to get this off my face.

This product also seems to be worse than most of the other foundations that I have tried in terms of emphasizing the wrinkles and texture irregularities of my skin.

In addition, despite the fact that I think I had a good shade match, I think that the look of this foundation makes it very obvious to others that I am wearing makeup. This is opposite from my goal of having any makeup that I am wearing disappear into my skin to the point that it does not look like I wearing any makeup at all.

All in all, I just don’t think that this foundation is a very good match for my own needs and wants.

It seems more intended for women who are younger than I am, and who are more concerned about coverage than the emphasis of wrinkles and other texture issues, and who have a limited amount of money to spend on makeup products.

The product is available in 35 shades, most of them designed for those with darker skin.

I found that the shade MN5 (“almond medium skin with neutral undertones”) was an acceptable match for my summertime facial skin.

Mineral Fusion Liquid Foundation – $33

Ingredients Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Lisa Irritation Level: None

This product is described on the Mineral Fusion website as follows: “Flawless, full coverage. Mineral Fusion Liquid Foundation gives your skin that I-woke-up-like-this look thanks to its luxe, matte coverage that won’t streak, crease, or look anything but flawless. Age-defying and skin-soothing. Helps encourage firmer, more youthful skin with an antioxidant-rich blend of Green Tea, Pomegranate, Vitamin C, and Peptides. For a skin-soothing touch, Licorice Root, Aloe Vera, and Lavender combine for a seriously calming effect.”

Although this product contains some dimethicone (silicone), it is listed as the eleventh ingredient. Some preservatives (phenoxyethanol and polysorbate-20) that some people can find irritating also are included.

I did not find that this product irritated my skin at all.

However, I did feel that it made my wrinkles look quite a lot worse and that it was very obvious that I was wearing makeup when I had this foundation on.

The product is also pretty shiny looking, to the point that I would probably want to take that down with some powder if I were going to wear it out.

This is an older formula, and I think that some of the fuller-coverage, cleaner foundations that have been released during the past couple of years provide a much more natural look.

Although the product contains some floral ingredients, I am not noticing any particular floral scent associated with it.

The product is available in 30 shades. I tried the color Warm 2 – Buff and thought that it was a pretty good match.

The description of this product on the Nars website reads, “Nars’ exclusive complex helps to reflect light like a prism by addressing luminosity at the surface of the skin, while boosting the look of skin’s clarity and immersing skin in moisture and minerals. This innovative blend of makeup and skincare instantly blurs imperfections, smooths the look of textured skin, and helps conceal blemishes, dark spots, and redness. Visibly improves skin’s clarity after six weeks of daily use, even after makeup is removed. Powered by advanced skincare ingredients that help defend against environmental aggressors and blue light, it immediately strengthens skin’s barrier to help maintain its moisture. Suitable for most skin types, including sensitive skin. Medium, buildable coverage with a natural finish. Breathable, all-day wear. 36 shades.”

This foundation was introduced in 2021.

Especially considering that it does not contain any silicone, I think that it works well on my skin and that it looks very nice.

The appearance of the foundation is glowy but not too shiny, without drawing attention to my wrinkles or other skin textue issues.

I’ve not found it to be irritating to my skin at all and think the smell is fine.

It’s a real surprise that this foundation works so well on me, actually.

This would be an excellent product for me if I were looking for a higher-coverage foundation, and it also has worked well for me mixed with a little moisturizer to make it more sheer.

Rare Beauty Liquid Touch Weightless Foundation – $29

Ingredients Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Lisa Irritation Level: Very Mild

Coverage Level: Medium

The description of this product reads, “An innovative long-lasting foundation that combines the weightless feel of a serum with buildable medium coverage for truly breathable, layerable wear. Weightless, smooth-glide formula dries to a natural, skin-like finish in 48 shades. Pure pigments are packed in a super fluid, serum-like base, making it easier than ever to blend and build your coverage just how you like it—a little really goes a long way. Evens out skin tone and smooths the look of pores. No clogging or caking. Lasts all day without drying you out or changing color on you. Convenient, mess-free doe-foot applicator lets you apply 1 dot at a time—all you need to cover your entire face!”

I obtained a sample package of this foundation and found it to be very mildly irritating to my skin.

I’m not sure which ingredients might be responsible, but I would not purchase it for that reason.

The is unfortunate since otherwise the foundation performed well for me.

It gave me a substantial amount of coverage while looking natural on my skin.

I did not feel that it emphasized my wrinkles or other textural issues at all.

I also liked the consistency of the product, which was slightly hydrating without being greasy or sticky.

I did feel that it looked a little patchy on some of the areas around my nose when I wasn’t wearing concealer, but in general it looked pretty good.

For those who can tolerate the product, I think that it might be a good choice.

RMS Beauty ReEvolve Natural Finish Liquid Foundation – $48

♣ Living Clean Superstar

Ingredients Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Lisa Irritation Level: None

Processed Fragrance: None

Silicone Level: None

Foundation Type: Water-Based

Coverage Level: Medium

The description of this product reads, “Fresh feeling and easy to blend, this power-packed formula delivers smooth, long-lasting medium coverage with a satin, natural finish, while it hydrates, firms and softens this skin. Formulated with ingredients like advanced Tightenyl, moisture-rich vegetable squalane, soothing organic aloe and our signature RMS adaptogenic herbal blend bottled up in an innovative, refillable package.”

This product (introduced by RMS in Summer 2022) includes a variety of cleaner synthetic ingredients, in addition to some natural ingredients.

It thus is different than most of the classic RMS formulas, which consist mostly of natural ingredients.

Interestingly, when I have done a comparison to the RMS cream foundation, I have found that the products look almost exactly the same on my skin, even though the ingredient lists are quite different.

I personally like the cream foundation more, because it is more moisturizing and seems to diffuse the lines on my face a bit more.

But the liquid foundation also looks nice on me and has worked well for me, without exacerbating my wrinkles or irritating my skin.

The liquid foundation seems that it would be much better for younger women who have oilier skin and who do not want to have to make the effort to put on their makeup with a wet sponge (which seems to be the only way to make the cream foundation work).

I have found that the liquid foundation goes on quite easily and performs similarly to many of the silicone-containing foundations that I have used.

I have been using the Shade 11 (“ivory with a slight golden base”) in all RMS complexion products. It has been a good match for me in this product as well.

RMS Beauty “Un” Cover Up Cream Foundation – $52

♣ Living Clean Superstar

Living Clean Rating: 10 out of 10

Performance Rating: 5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

Ingredients Rating: 5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

Lisa Irritation Level: None

Processed Fragrance: None

Silicone Level: None

Foundation Type: Oil-Based

Coverage Level: Medium/Full

The description of this product reads, “Formulated with wild-crafted buriti oil, organic coconut oil, and the RMS signature adaptogenic herbal blend, this power-packed cream foundation evens skin tone with seamless, super-hydrating high impact coverage, while it nourishes and calms skin. This concentrated formula contains Beauty Oil for rich hydration that helps smooth the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Silica boosts coverage of dark spots and redness.”

This cream foundation is a sort of line extension of the RMS popular cream concealer and may be one of the most controversial beauty products that I have tried, in that many people insist that it has been almost life-changing for them and many others say that they have been totally unable to make it work for them.

I was on the fence about the product myself until I tried “Rose Marie’s favorite method” of dotting the product onto my skin and then using a damp beauty sponge to blend it in.

The result when I do that is a perfectly natural looking finish that does not accentuate my wrinkles at all but that also seems to have the potential of being “buildable” to the point of covering any issues that I might have.

In addition, the skincare components of the formula (including jojoba oil, buriti oil and coconut oil) seem to be really good for my skin and I have experienced no irritation at all as a result of using it.

It also contains an “adaptogenic herbal blend” that gives it a bit of a scent that I find to be fine (but that not everyone may like).

Even without a primer, this product seems to hold up really well on my skin. (RMS does make a primer that is supposed to help the foundation last even longer though.)

I’ve read comments from several people saying that it has worked well for them as stage makeup (with a friend of mine reporting a very good experience using it for a series of ballet performances).

Based on my experiences with the product, I think that a lot of the problems that people have with it are due to the fact that when it is first applied to the skin it tends to sit on the surface and thus to look sort of like a kabuki mask.

While eventually it will sink down into the pores and start looking better, it seems essential to kick-start the process either by using the damp beauty sponge or by assertively buffing it into the skin with a dense brush.

While RMS sells a brush – called the Skin2Skin Foundation Brush ($38) – that seems designed to massage the product into the skin, I also have been successful using either a kabuki brush or the Jones Road Everything brush.

RMS also sells a specially designed Skin2Skin Beauty Sponge ($20) to blend the foundation into the skin using a bit of water, but my Beauty Blender sponge seems to have worked fine for that as well.

Although my skin is good enough that I don’t feel it’s necessary for me to use any kind of overall foundation at all, I’m thinking that likely this is the one that I would choose if I needed more coverage.

The fact that my skin feels moisturized and protected while I am wearing it is an additional bonus.

Although the product is said to be appropriate for “all skin types,” I tend to think that it is going to be much more appreciated by those with dry, sensitive skin like mine than it is by most other people.

I have used Shade 11 (“ivory with a slight golden base”) in all my RMS complexion products, and it seems to have worked well for me in this one.

Westman Atelier Vital Skincare Dewy Foundation Drops – $68

Living Clean Rating: 8 out of 10

Performance Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Ingredients Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Lisa Irritation Level: None

Processed Fragrance: None

Silicone Level: None

Foundation Type: Water/Oil Hybrid

Coverage Level: Light/Medium

The description of this product reads, “Makeup that works with your skin, not over it. Complexion-boosting drops give breathable coverage and radiance while improving bare skin quality. Loaded with skincare actives at efficacy levels, this deeply nourishing formula instantly hydrates, evens tone and soothes. Drop by drop, our Skin Vitality Complex improves texture, firmness and radiance with Tsubaki Oil, Ginseng and Pomegranate Extract. Skin is smoother, feels healthier and acts younger. Each drop glides on like a lightweight oil and transforms into a cushiony serum for dewy, facial-fresh skin—long after it’s washed off.”

This new foundation was introduced by Westman Atelier in Summer 2022 and is promoted as being especially good for the skin.

In addition, it is promoted as having the ability to provide a higher coverage level than many cleaner foundations do.

I bought a bottle of this foundation and think that it feels okay on my skin and that it has not caused any irritation.

In addition, the product goes on easily as a sheer foundation but also builds up fairly well to medium coverage.

Unfortunately, I feel that this product has the tendency to make the wrinkles around my eyes look noticeably worse.

To wear it successfully, I need to avoid using it in my eye area at all and then to use to use a good concealer to address the issues near my eyes.

In addition, apparently as a result of the large amounts of both mica and squalane in the formula, the product makes my skin look much more shiny than I would prefer.

Although I have tried using powder (including the Westman Atelier powder) to cover the shine, this seems to require quite a lot of powder and still has not worked all that well for me.

This product seems like it might be more appropriate for someone who has dry skin and substantial issues (such as rosacea or dark spots) that require a higher coverage level, and also who does not have very many wrinkles.

It seems to me that this description actually fits Westman Atelier owner Gucci Westman quite well, which could explain why she is so enthusiastic about the product.

(Perhaps it also describes many of Westman’s celebrity clients, whose use of Botox and other cosmetic procedures may have made their wrinkles less of a problem for them than mine are for me.)

In looking at the ingredient list, I am guessing that although the inclusion of tsubaki oil (aka Japanese camellia seed oil) is being stressed in the marketing of this product, a lot of the moisturizing benefits actually are provided by the squalane that is listed as the first ingredient.

Just over the past couple of years, companies such as Biossance have started offering squalane produced through biotechnology (e.g. through genetically engineered bacteria being used to convert inexpensive ingredients like sugarcane). Whether this will turn out to be problematic in some way, I don’t think anyone yet has enough information to say for sure.

I therefore wrote to Westman Atelier and asked them about the source of the squalane used in this foundation. The response that I received was, “The squalane in our products is derived from olives.”

To my understanding, this means that the squalane is not biotech-generated and that it is rather expensive, a fact that makes me feel somewhat better about the high price being charged for the product.

Another concern for me is the use of small amounts of soybean oil, wheat germ oil, cottonseed oil and corn germ oil in the formula, since all of these tend to be highly contaminated with glyphosate and other agricultural toxins unless they are organic (which Westman Atelier is not claiming here).

The product also includes avocado oil and pomegranate seed oil as the third and fourth ingredients (after the squalane and water).

All in all, the product is so oil-heavy that I have not found that I have been able to use much other skincare underneath it.

For those who like the skincare ingredients included in this formula, that could be a benefit. However, I don’t know that those particular ingredients are as good for my skin as the products that I otherwise would be using, and so consider that to be a slight drawback of the product.

All in all, while I think that my skin did okay with this foundation, intuitively I don’t feel that it seems as clean as some of the other products on this page.

I also think that there are quite a few other products that have been much more successful in helping me to look good.

Especially considering the high cost of the product, I found my whole experience with it to be on the disappointing side.

While some people say that they really like this product, I think it would be a good idea to try it out before purchasing or to confirm that it can be easily returned if it doesn’t work out.

Armani Luminous Silk Foundation ($69): I received a sample of this popular and expensive foundation and so gave it a try. I thought that it looked nice on my face (though not any nicer than many of the other foundations that I have tried) but did find that it has caused irritation in the form of itching. I also found the synthetic fragrance used in the product to be unpleasant. EWG gives this foundation an 8 (red), flagging as problematic the cyclopentasiloxane (3), cetyl PEG/PPG-10/1 dimethicone (3), phenoxyethanol (4), PEG-10 dimethicone (3), limonene (5), benzyl salicylate (5), benzyl alcohol (6), linalool (3), isobutane (6), fragrance (8), methylparaben (4), hexyl cinnamal (3), and titanium dioxide (3).

Chanel No. 1 De Chanel Revitalizing Foundation ($70): This new foundation (introduced in 2022) from Chanel looked nice on me, but also caused my skin to become irritated. The product contains synthetic fragrance, which I found to be slightly objectionable in terms of the scent and which I suspect also caused the itching and redness. EWG gives the product a 6 (yellow), flagging as problematic the tocopheryl acetate (3), chlorphenesin (3), fragrance (8), and titanium dioxide (3).

About This Website

The Living Clean in a Dirty World shopping website is designed to provide guidance to those seeking out products that are relatively low in toxicity and that provide generally positive user experiences.

Although the skincare and makeup sections have a particular focus on products appropriate for women who are in their 40’s or beyond, the information provided may be useful for other people as well.

The products are curated by Lisa Petrison, who has been focused on helping people to improve their health by avoiding toxicity since 2008 and who heads the Paradigm Change organization.

Her Living Clean in a Dirty World blog site discusses a variety of topics of relevance to those who are working to pursue a more natural lifestyle with less exposure to harmful toxicity.

Lisa is the author of several books, including A Beginner’s Guide to Mold Avoidance (co-written with Erik Johnson).

She also runs the Paradigm Change website (focusing on issues related to toxic mold illness) and the Mold Avoiders Facebook group (designed for the discussion of all topics of interest to those pursuing the mold avoidance approach described in the “Beginner’s Guide” book).

Lisa was born in August 1964 and has yet to try cosmetic surgery, Botox or other cosmetic treatments requiring interactions with a physician, or beauty products containing retinoids.

In her former life, Lisa worked as a business school professor, as a marketing consultant to a variety of large companies, and as a reporter covering the advertising industry.

She holds a Ph.D. in marketing and social psychology from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University as well as B.S./M.S. degrees from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern.

Lisa would like to extend a special note of appreciation to Ellen Kleiman-Redden for her help in trying out products and discussing issues related to this project.

She also would like to thank the many members of the Mold Avoiders community who have shared suggestions of products to be included here.

A Note From Lisa

Products that I have tried or researched and that I have not found to be acceptable from a toxicity standpoint have been omitted entirely from the discussions on this website.

However, since a goal of this project is to introduce people to a range of options in terms of price and functionality, some products discussed on this site include ingredients that may not be appropriate for everyone.

It’s my hope that all individuals making their way to this site will find at least a few options from each product category that meet all of their own needs and wants from a variety of perspectives.

The vast majority of cosmetics marketers now offer affiliate programs in which Internet content creators may earn commissions if people who are referred to the companies’ sites by clicking on links end up making purchases.

I participate in quite a few individual affiliate programs as well as in the Sovrn/Viglinks program (which automatically converts regular links into revenue-generating links).

Links on this page that may result in affiliate income may include – but are not necessarily limited to – those from the following companies: 100% Pure, Amazon, Caliray, Chanel, Credo, Crunchi, Ere Perez, Fitglow, Jane Iredale, Jones Road, Juice Beauty, Kjaer Weis, Kosas, Lawless, Lys Beauty, Maybelline, Milk Makeup, Nars, Pacifica, Pharmaca, Range Beauty, Rituel de Fille, RMS Beauty, Rose Inc., Saint Cosmetics, Sephora, Typology, Ulta, Vapour, and Westman Atelier.
