While lip pencils often are perceived to be among the most optional of makeup items, it seems that many mature women may benefit quite a bit from using them.
As skin begins to age, it loses some of its elasticity and the natural definition between the lips and the skin surrounding the mouth may begin to break down. This can allow lipsticks to feather and smear into the surrounding skin and also can create a general look of aging.
Lip pencils tend to be textured enough to give back some of the original definition to the lips and can provide a good surface that may prevent feathering with creamier lipsticks.
Lip pencils also can be used just beyond the edges of lips to create an appearance of more fullness, though I haven’t focused much on doing that myself.
I do find that my lips look a lot better and that whatever lipstick I am wearing lasts considerably longer when I take a few seconds to put on some lip pencil, though.
I usually use lip pencil over my entire lips rather than just around the edges, to provide a good base for whatever other lip products I am using.
Although most brands of lip pencils come in a variety of colors, I usually just wear a neutral color (similar to the natural color of my lips) regardless of what color lipstick or lip gloss I am planning to wear.
However, those who often wear certain shades of bright lipsticks may find that choosing a similar pencil shade can help them to define their lips better as well as to maintain their lip color longer.
One more thing that I have learned about wearing lip liners is that they tend to work much better if I use a lip primer first.
While a balm is better than nothing, an actual lip primer (such as MAC Prep + Prime Lip) has been much more effective for me.

The description of this product reads, “Define and shape lips with precision. 96% naturally derived pure Nourish-Mint lip liner with mango seed oil and a blend of botanical waxes for smooth gliding, blendable color. Designed to maximize lip color benefits, helping extend wear and reduce feathering.”
These pencils are available in some very pretty neutral colors that feel pretty clean to me, and I have purchased a few of them over the years.
The problem with these pencils is that, in my experience, the product inside the pencil does not hold up very well and eventually easily breaks off every time I try to sharpen the pencil.
Once the lip pencils break down and cannot be sharpened effectively, the only thing to do with them is just to throw them away.
I thus don’t think I will buy these again, even though I have enjoyed them briefly before they start breaking on me.

The description of this product reads, “A velvety liner that gives lips natural-looking definition. Draw around the edge of lips for a crisp line or color them in completely, and then apply lip color. Defines lips for sculpted precision. Imparts velvety softness. Layers well with other lip colors.”
This lip pencil includes cottonseed oil, which is an ingredient that is usually highly contaminated with glyphosate and that I think is particularly problematic for me when used in eyeliner pencils.
While I haven’t felt like this lip pencil has exactly irritated my lips, I’ve felt less like my lips are okay wearing it than I do with most other lip pencils that I have tried.
The taste of this lip pencil is also not too appealing to me.
I will say that Bobbi Brown has a quite wide range of 13 different lip liner shades (created through the use of a wide range of artificial colors), which may be appealing to some people.
I have the shade Burnt Orange (“a pumpkin orange”) and feel that it is a nice fall shade that has worked especially well with some of my warm lipstick or lip gloss colors, for instance.

The description of this product reads, “Creates a refined, soft and smudge-free look eliminating the ring-around-the-lips look. Crafted in Italy. The indispensible lip pencil for creating a perfect long-lasting pout. Long-lasting, full coverage with a semi-matte finish. Water-resistant formula.”
Although I have liked the other Chantecaille lip products that I have tried, I feel somewhat less impressed with this lip pencil.
I have the shade Nuance (“a sheer pinky beige”) in this product and expected it to be similar to the natural color of my lips.
However, I feel like this lip liner looks really unattractive when I put it on by itself, and that it somehow manages to make the lipsticks that I put on top of it look worse than they usually do.
I don’t really understand that. Maybe there is some French trick to using it that I have not figured out.
On the other hand, my experience with Chantecaille products in general has been that the good ones are at least twice as expensive as I would expect them to be if they were offered by any other company.
This lip pencil, on the other hand, is priced about the same amount that many other companies would charge for it.
I wonder if that should be taken as a clue that this is just not one of the company’s better products.
In any case, while I will continue to experiment with this pencil a bit more, I doubt that I will be buying any more of them.

The description of the Pillow Talk shade of this product reads, “My iconic nude-pink lip liner pencil that suits everyone for a defined, fuller looking Pillow Talk pout! This lip liner is the world-famous nude-pink that started my Pillow Talk phenomenon. It matches the pink undertones of your lips for a dreamy, fuller-looking pout in seconds! The velvety, waterproof formula glides onto your lips and smoother over texture for a seamless line, so you can resize and reshape the look of your lips for a fuller looking Pillow Talk pout! Two Pillow Talk Lip Cheats are sold every 2 minutes!”
This lip liner has a slightly sticky consistency that is a little different than that of most of the other lip pencils that I have tried.
I think that this actually does make it easier for me to line outside my natural lip line and that it also serves as a nice grippy base for lipstick.
While I do think this liner works well with my Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution Pillow Talk lipstick, I am even more impressed with how it performs in conjunction with my MAC and other especially difficult lipsticks.
While this lip liner is a bit drying, I think that is part of what causes it to work so well.
Personally, I do not plan to be wearing this type of lip liner along with drying matte lipsticks on a daily basis.
That is more something that I would use for special occasions, when I would care about how well the lipstick performed.
The pencil does include the fat preservative BHT, which would disqualify it from being sold by Credo.
The product also includes a variety of artificial colors and vanillin, which may be problematic for some people.
I personally have felt that this lip pencil has not caused me any irritation of any kind, though.
While I have the Pillow Talk shade in this lipstick, quite a few other shades available as well.

The description of this product reads, “All-day lip liner. Use to line or define lips or smooth all over lips before lipstick application for extended wear. Non-drying formula helps keep lipstick in place. Prevents lipstick from feathering and bleeding. No sharpening required.”
I am a fan of pencils that do not need to be sharpened, and feel that this lip pencil has worked pretty well for me.
It contains silicone (cyclopentasiloxane), which doesn’t seem to be that problematic in terms of human health issues but which conceivably (especially in larger quantities) could have a negative effect on the environment.
Silicone in lip pencils is used to allow the product to go on more smoothly and evenly, without the need for ingredients such as oils that might detract from how long the product lasts.
The other problem ingredients in these lip pencils consist of a variety of food colorings, most of which likely are not present in the neutral shades that I prefer in a lip pencil.
I have not noticed any taste or odor in this lip liner, and it seems to work well for me without causing any irritation.
The regular Quickliner for Lips is available in 15 shades.
I have the shade Soft Rose, which is just a slightly darker version of my natural lip color. I feel that it has served well as a base for a wide variety of different lipsticks.

The description of this product reads, “Clinique’s top-selling lip pencil, now in a pigment-rich formula. Silky formula glides on and wears for hours. Use it to define the lip line or fill in lips pre-lipstick application. Non-drying formula prevents lipstick from feathering and bleeding all day. No sharpening required.”
Although these lip pencils seem to be positioned by Clinique as the same as the regular Quickliners but with more pigment, in actuality they are using a totally different formula (and one without any silicone in it).
It has been my experience that this formula works okay for me as long as I just follow the natural lines of my lips, but that it doesn’t work very well if I bring it outside my natural lip line.
The colors are bright, but that is what this particular product is all about.
I have the shade Intense Cayenne, which is a warm red.
I have tried using this as a liner and on my entire lip area.
I think that it looks passably okay on ts own and very nice with bright lipstick on top.

These liners glide onto the lips easily, seamlessly and with a creamy texture that stays in place without bleeding onto your skin. Using the blending brush, you can line, fill or blend out the color until you’ve achieved your desired look.”
This is an all-natural product, without any artificial colors or other synthetic ingredients.
I have the color Buff, which is close to the color of my own lips.
The pencil puts down a somewhat tacky coating on my lips that helps lipsticks to adhere better.
I wouldn’t say that it has been especially good at creating a lot of definition on my lips, and I definitely wouldn’t try to overline my lips with this pencil.
It does feel clean and pleasant, however.
I also like the inclusion of the blending brush on the pencil.

The description of this product reads, “A clean, comfortable, creamy lipstick that wraps lips in high-impact, longwear color that leaves them feeling moisturized for up to 12 hours. Experience pigment, precision and nourishment in one slim lip crayon. Le Monster delivers the ultimate balance of comfort and longwear color in lightweight demi-matte or shimmer shades that condition lips and last all day. HausTech Powered with Mango Seed Oil + Ceramides.”
This product was introduced by Haus Labs in 2022 and contains a good bit of silicone.
Although it is promoted by Haus Labs as a lipstick, I don’t feel that it works all that well on its own.
It feels pretty dry and seems to strongly emphasize textural issues of the lips, as I have experienced myself and which also is evident from the photos on the Haus Labs website.
Although I know that a super-matte lip look is somewhat in style now, I don’t really like the flat appearance of this lipstick very much even if I put the textural issues aside.
However, it is my experience that this product is terrific when it is used as a base for another regular lipstick, which is why I have decided to list it on this page.
I have found that the product goes on very easily and smoothly, making it easy for me to outline my lips precisely and then to fill in with color.
This serves as a very good base for pretty much any lipstick I may want to apply, including my MAC ones.
The texture of the product does not feel as tacky as with some lip pencils (such as the Charlotte Tilbury one), but I feel that it works even better in conjunction with my lipsticks.
The fact that this is a twist-up product that does not need to be sharpened is a big bonus for me.
I have the shade Rose Matte (“warm pink brown”) in this product and have found that it has worked well for me as a liner/base for a variety of different lipsticks and lip glosses.
Most of the other colors in this line are much brighter and more dramatic, though.
The products do not contain any added flavor or fragrance.
They do contain the preservative phenoxyethanol, which I think is okay for me in most cosmetics but would prefer not to have included in lip products.
Also included are a variety of artificial colors as well as lactic acid (which apparently serves as a lip exfoliator).
I do feel that this product has a slightly unpleasant taste that makes me a little disinclined to use it on its own, but that bothers me less when I put other lipstick on top of it.
While I wouldn’t want to wear this product every day, I do think it works great for those occasions when I want to wear a MAC lipstick or other long-lasting matte lipstick.

The description of this product reads, “Our Lip Pencils are soft enough to fill in your lips easily but durable enough to provide a long-lasting base to the color you layer over them. Mineral pigment-based lip pencil with a soft formula that won’t tug at delicate skin. Made with conditioning oils and waxes. Soft formula lends itself to blending and being used as a lip base. Use a Jane Iredale sharpener to maintain a rounded point. Other sharpeners will split the wood.”
Jane Iredale makes a wide variety of neutral shades of lip liners, all of which contain only natural colors and which are free of toxic ingredients.
I have the Spice shade and think that it serves as a nice base for any other lip products that I may be using.
It also feels pretty clean to me.
However, compared to many of the other lip liners discussed here, the Jane Iredale product seems to go on feeling much more dry.
In fact, I would say that it is just about impossible for me to use this product without a lip primer on underneath it. Even a lip balm does not really suffice.
With a good lip primer (such as the ones from MAC or Anastasia Beverly Hills), the Jane Iredale pencil works pretty well, though.
I do really like the fact that the product is free of artificial colors and am a little inclined to use it just because of that.
A total of 13 different shades are currently available.
However, based on the website photos, I feel like all the shades are so muted that I am not sure that it likely matters that much which one is chosen.

The description of this product reads, “Define, line, shape, contour, and fill with Forget the Filler Definer Liner. This comfortable, creamy lip liner provides a silky smooth touch and optimal glide, and delivers highly pigmented payoff in one tug-free stroke. Rich emollients in the formula wrap the lips with a weightless, flexible film. Long-wearing beautiful creamy satin finish. Tug-free stroke.”
This lip liner is somewhat similar to the Charlotte Tilbury one, in that it is a little sticky and seems intended specifically to allow people to use the pencil to overdraw their lips as well as to serve as a base for lipstick.
It is a pretty clean product that seems to work very well for me under MAC lipsticks or other matte lipsticks.
It feels comfortable to me, both in terms of the lack of apparent toxicity and in terms of its performance on my lips.
The ingredient list looks pretty good, with only a few artificial colors being of any concern to EWG.
The product does have a noticeable smell of vanillin that might bother some people.
I have this product in the color Pink Sand, which seems to be only a little darker than the natural color of my lips and which seems to work well with a variety of different lipsticks.
I would consider buying this product again, just because I feel that it works unusually well under my MAC lipsticks.

The description of this product reads, “Enhance and Define ‘Beauty’ Liners are available in the same tone as lipstick but are deeper in intensity for an extra defined look. This luxury lip pencil adds extra depth to your lips making them look fuller and defined to perfection. My lip pencils are a gel formula that glides on smoothly and easily to even the driest lips. Once set they are completely smudge and waterproof.”
As of this writing, Lisa Eldridge offers 17 shades in her True Velvet Lip Color lipsticks, as well as a lip pencil to match each shade.
I tried the lipstick as well as the lip pencil in Velvet Muse (“a sensual, smoky rosewood shade with the perfect mix of pinky brown and dirty rose undertones”), which is one of her most popular shades.
The lip pencil is softer than most that I have tried, to the point of almost having a lipstick consistency itself.
However, I do think that the lipstick serves as a good base for the lipstick, allowing me to more easily draw a distinct line on my lips and giving the lip look a bit more substance and staying power.
I wouldn’t say that the wear time is very good regardless, though. I still need to reapply the lipstick often if I want to keep it intact, and it disappears entirely if I eat a meal.
However, I do really like the look of my True Velvet lipstick, and I think that the lip pencil adds enough to it that I would be inclined to pick up a pencil in a matching shade for any other colors in this line that I might purchase.
Although I guess I could use this lip liner with other lipsticks, I don’t really have any other matte lipsticks that are even close to this shade.
In addition, I feel like this lip liner is so soft that it needs to be sharpened quite frequently, and thus am feeling like I should save it for use with the matching lipstick rather than using it up with other lipsticks.

The description of this product reads, “A pencil in a wide range of colours designed for shaping, lining or filling in lips. Our Lip Pencils have a smooth, creamy texture that is perfect for outlining lips or colouring them in. Available in a wide selection of colours that each work well with many different lipstick shades.”
I have been fairly happy with this MAC product and think that it feels as clean to me as the other lip pencils discussed on this page.
The pencils do have the potential of containing quite a few artificial colors, but other than that look pretty good in terms of the ingredients.
A moderate amount of silicone is included, and I do not see that as a problem.
I am more concerned about the use of hydrogenated vegetable oil (since that could be contaminated with glyphosate), but I feel that the pencil that I have has tasted and felt okay to me.
It is moderately dry and has held up well on my lips as a base for MAC lipsticks or other lipsticks.
I have the color Spice and feel that it has been a nice neutral that works well with many different lipsticks.

Incredibly vivid, smooth color for all-day vibrance. Nourishing botanicals feel good on your skin (and conscience). Bursting with lip-hydrating goodness.”
This lip pencil feels a little less dry to me than some of its competitors and seems to provide a nice base for lipstick.
It also feels quite clean to me, without any noticeable smell or taste.
I have the Graceful color, which is a neutral dusty pink.
While none of this company’s lip pencils contain artificial colors, all of them except for Graceful use Carmine (which is a coloring agent derived from beetles).
I think it is a nice basic lip pencil.

Includes a built-in sharpener so you can create a precision tip for more detailed application.”
This lip liner contains cyclopentasiloxane (a cyclic silicone that would disqualify it from being sold at Credo) and some artificial colorants, but otherwise seems to have a pretty clean ingredient list.
The formula seems to me quite similar to that of the Clinique Quickliner for Lips, and I have enjoyed using both products.
I do not feel that any kind of silicone has caused me any problems when used in lip products, and this one seems to have been fine for my skin.
The product has allowed me to very easily draw an attractive lip, and I appreciate the convenience of a retractable pencil.
Although this lip liner is labeled as being “plumping,” I haven’t really noticed it accomplishing that more than other lip liners that I have used.
I have this product in the shade of Kackie (“mocha”), which has worked well for me with more neutral lipsticks and also has served to give some definition to my lips when wearing lipstick shades that seem a little too light for me.
I would be interested in trying some additional shades.

It’s made with 100% clean ingredients, silicone-free, vegan + cruelty-free.”
This new product (released in Summer 2022) is available in three shades – Fill Me In (“rosy nude”), Draw Me (“chocolate brown”) and Work of Art (“pinky taupe”). I have the Work of Art one.
This product feels good to me as a lip liner and seems to serve as a good basis for lipsticks.
I tried using this product as an eyeliner and did not find that it irritated my eyes at all.
While the Work of Art shade seems to me too light and too pink to serve as a good eyeliner, probably the Draw Me brown color would work a lot better.
I admit that I have misplaced this lip liner after only using it one time and therefore have not been able to write a review that is as comprehensive as I would like. (Maybe my dog stole it and hid it somewhere?)
I am hoping to find this lip pencil or acquire another one and thus be able to give a more detailed report.

The description of this product reads, “Lip Definer may be one of Victoria’s favourite products ever—a precise, waterproof pencil to line and define the natural shape of your lips. The smooth texture allows for tug free, impeccable precision for contoured lips without skipping or feathering. The result is a uniform lay down that contours and colours the lips, creating a defined, fuller lip look.”
This is a low-key lip liner that looks passably good on my lips even without any lipstick on top.
I think that it looks especially nice with the Victoria Beckham Posh Lipstick that I own, but it works with other lipsticks as well.
The ingredient list looks good (with just a few artificial colors being problematic), and it feels good on my lips.
It doesn’t have any particular taste that I can detect.
While I really like this lip liner, I wouldn’t really suggest it for attempting to redefine the lips or to make them look plumper.
It more just seems to me to be best used as basic prep for my lipstick.
I have Shade 03 (“a pink mauve”) in the lip liner and Pout (“a pale coral pink”) in the lipstick. This is described as VB’s Pretty Pink on the website, and I do think that they look really pretty together.
Upon reflection, it wasn’t until I tried out all my lip liners on one day that I realized how much I like this one.
Maybe at some point, I even will buy another shade, along with an additional lipstick shade.
