Aveda Hand Relief Moisturizing Creme – $26
Living Clean Rating: 6 out of 10
Performance Rating: (3 / 5)
Ingredients Rating: (3 / 5)
Lisa Irritation Level: Mild
Processed Fragrance: Natural Fragrance, Citral, Limonene, Linalool
Silicone Level: Moderate
Cost Per Ounce: $6.19
The description of this product reads, “Treat your hardworking hands to this luxuriously rich hand creme, which intensely moisturizes and leaves hands feeling soft and smooth.”
Because I often get my hair cut in Aveda salons, I have tried this hand cream numerous times over the years and have never found it to be useful to me.
This cream does not feel very moisturizing to my hands and seems to irritate them a bit.
Since this is an Aveda product, the fragrance mentioned in the ingredient list is stated as being from botanical sources.
While I do not personally mind the scent, I do feel that it is quite strong and that the use of fragrance is likely one of the things that is causing the hand cream to be irritating for me.

Beautycounter Softening Hand Lotion – $62
Performance Rating: Not Yet Rated
Ingredients Rating: (4 / 5)
Processed Fragrance: Orange Peel Oil, Lemon Peel Oil, Bergamot Fruit Oil, Lime Oil, Tangerine Leaf Oil, Artemesia Herba-Alba Leaf Oil, Rose Geranium Flower Oil
Silicone Level: None
Cost Per Ounce: $4.19
The description of this product reads, “Meet your daily essential for happy, hydrated hands. This lightweight, moisturizing lotion features conditioning ingredients like jojoba oil and shea butter to leave hands soft and smooth. Enjoy an elevated experience, thanks to the refreshing neroli scent and a recyclable glass bottle. Hands feel immediately hydrated. Softens and soothes dry hands. Lightweight and non-greasy formula.”
This large glass bottle (containing almost a pint of product) is the only hand cream currently listed on the Beautycounter site.
Although I have not tried this product, I did buy a smaller tube of a previous version of Beautycounter hand cream in early 2022 and liked it quite a bit.
That product contains similar fragrance ingredients to this one, and I found the level of fragrance to be moderate (rather than very strong as is the case with some products listed on this page).
This version contains rose geranium oil, which I do not personally tolerate.
However, I think that the other ingredients in this product look pretty good and that the price per ounce is reasonable.
I therefore would seriously consider buying this product if I were not in the process of testing other products and if I were not sensitive to rose geranium oil.
I hope that Beautycounter releases smaller sizes of hand creams that are unfragranced or that use other fragrances in the future.

Birkenstock Moisturizing Hand and Nail Cream – $22
Living Clean Rating: 6 out of 10
Performance Rating: (3 / 5)
Ingredients Rating: (3 / 5)
Lisa Irritation Level: Mild
Fragrance Ingredients: Natural Fragrance, Geraniol, Limonene, Linalool
Silicone Level: None
Cost Per Ounce: $8.80
The description of this product reads, “This fast-absorbing hand and nail moisturizer deeply hydrates dry, cracked hands. Cork oak and jojoba oil work together to soothe dryness and strengthen the skin’s natural barrier. Moisturizing avocado oil helps shield against free radicals while aloe vera cools and calms dry, itchy skin.”
This product contains a number of nice oils as well as cork extract, which is supposed to have benefits to address wrinkling of the skin.
However, it has a really strong baby powder type smell that – while supposedly derived from botanical sources – I find to be too much for me.
I also feel that the product is mildly irritating to my hands, probably due the scent that is used.
I’ve tried a number of Birkenstock skincare products (including ones that have since been discontinued) and only the fragranced ones were problematic for me.
I really wish that the company would release an unscented version of this hand cream since I think that I would then be a big fan of it, though.

Burt’s Bees Hemp Hand Cream – $9
Living Clean Rating: 6 out of 10
Performance Rating: (3 / 5)
Ingredients Rating: (3 / 5)
Lisa Irritation Level: Very Mild
Processed Fragrance: Natural Fragrance, Citral, Citronellol, Eugenol, Geraniol, Limonene, Linalool
Silicone Level: None
Cost Per Ounce: $3.60
The description of this product reads, “The nourishing Hemp Seed Oil in this nourishing hand cream provides powerful hydration, leaving hands feeling soft and healthy. And, the fresh verbena and basil scent is a delight—you’ll reach for this cream all day long!”
This hand cream seems to provide a fair amount of moisturizing benefits to my hand, with sunflower seed oil, coconut oil and baobab oil high on the ingredient list.
As with most Burt’s Bees products, the scent (which is stated as being derived from only botanical ingredients) is stronger than I would prefer and a little odd.
In addition, I have the feeling that this cream is not the quality in general that I would prefer. It seems that perhaps the oils are starting to go rancid or that the soybean oil that is far down in the ingredient list is not feeling that good to me.
I feel that it is very mildly irritating to my hands and so am disinclined to use it for that reason.

Burt’s Bees Rosemary & Lemon Hand Cream – $5
Living Clean Rating: 7 out of 10
Performance Rating: (4 / 5)
Ingredients Rating: (3 / 5)
Lisa Irritation Level: Very Mild
Processed Fragrance: Natural Fragrance, Citral, Limonene, Linalool
Silicone Level: None
Cost Per Ounce: $5.00
The description of this product reads, “Burt’s Bees Hand Cream with Shea Butter softens dry hands and invigorates the senses with the refreshing scent of Rosemary & Lemon. This luxurious hand cream nourishes hands with all day moisture and a rich buttery texture that goes on smoothly and leaves hands feeling silky smooth.”
This product is part of a line of hand creams with shea butter launched by Burt’s Bees in 2022.
The others in the line are Watermelon & Mint; Wild Rose & Berry; Lavender & Honey; and Naturally Clean.
The Naturally Clean version includes only natural botanical extracts, without any essential oils or processed fragrance.
The other products contain various fragrance ingredients derived from natural sources.
The creams contain substantial amounts of sunflower seed oil, coconut oil and baobab oil, with shea butter and jojoba oil much further down the list.
I think that this cream feels fairly good in terms of the consistency and the moisturizing benefits.
The smell is a lot stronger than I consider to be ideal, however.
In addition – probably because of the large amount of fragrance – the product feels a little irritating to any broken skin that I may have on my hands.
In general, I like the Honest hand creams (which are about the same price as these) considerably more.

Burt’s Bees Shea Butter Hand Repair Cream – $13
Living Clean Rating: 7 out of 10
Performance Rating: (4 / 5)
Ingredient Rating: (3 / 5)
Lisa Irritation Level: Very Mild
Processed Fragrance: Calendula Officinalis Flower Oil, Lonicera Japonica (Honeysuckle) Flower Extract, Lonicera Caprifolium (Honeysuckle) Flower Extract, Natural Fragrance, Limonene, Linalool, Citral
Silicone Level: None
Cost Per Ounce: $4.06
The description of this product reads, “Revive your hard-working hands with this ultra-rich cream that’s perfect for everyday hydration. Infused with moisturizing Shea Butter and quick-absorbing Cocoa Butter and Sesame Oil, you’ll be enjoying nourished, soft hands in no time.”
This product contains more healthy oils than many hand creams and is reasonably priced.
Shea is listed as the 7th ingredient.
Perhaps because it is based mostly on cocoa butter and sesame oil, it feels greasier than the shea-based hand creams that I have liked.
The product also has a substantial smell that I think is mostly from the honeysuckle.
Although I think that this product might be okay on my hands when they already are in good shape, it does seem to be irritating to any cracks that I already may have on my hands.
In looking at the ingredient list, I suspect the fragrance ingredients and the alcohol may be responsible for that.
Despite all this, I still think that this is one of the better mass-marketed scented products available and so can see why it gets good Amazon reviews.
I wouldn’t buy it again myself though.

Fragrance Ingredients: Eucalyptus globulus leaf oil

The description of this product reads, “A fast-absorbing, rich moisturizer that provides instant and long-term hydration for dry, distressed skin and eczema. This multi-purpose cream from First Aid Beauty contains a small amount of squalane, along with glycerin, coconut-derived moisturizers, shea butter and synthetic emollients.
Ingredients flagged by EWG as potentially problematic include phenoxyethanol (a preservative), dimethicone (silicone), and sodium hydroxide (lye).
The cream is suggested as being appropriate for use on both the body and the face.
While this cream does not contain very much oil, it does feel nice on my skin and does not seem to cause any irritation at all.
The eucalyptus smell is very slight, meaning that I only notice it if I make a special effort to look for it.
All in all, I think that is a nice light cream that works okay on my hands or body.
I have always needed to mix it with high-quality face oils in order to get any real benefit from it, though.

Helps protects skin from free radicals – with the help of olive leaf extract, rich in free-radical fighting polyphenols, and antioxidant-rich vitamin E.”
Follain is a skincare brand that is now owned by Credo and that is now featured prominently on the Credo website.
I found this hand cream to be moderately moisturizing and to absorb easily into my skin.
Shea butter is listed as the fourth ingredient, with squalane and sweet almond oil mentioned further down.
Although rose essential oil is listed pretty high on the ingredient list, I personally have felt that the cream smells more like oranges (apparently as a result of the orange peel extract).
I feel that the scent is fairly mild and not unpleasant at all.
While I do not like this product as much as I do the Honest creams, I do not mind using it.

The description of this product reads, “Clap back to the drying effects of frequent hand washing and cold weather with our Honest Hand Cream, specially formulated for dry skin. This antioxidant-packed formula delivers heavy-duty moisture with a rich blend of shea butter, omega fatty acids, and avocado oil that soothes dry skin and supports the skin barrier. Choose from three blissful scents: calming Lavender, nourishing Sweet Almond, or classic Sweet Orange Vanilla.”
This product seems similar in consistency and efficacy to the L’Occitane shea butter hand cream, but without the objectionable synthetic fragrance used in the L’Occitane product.
Despite the fact that I would prefer to use a hand cream that does not include any scent at all, this has become my favorite hand cream.
The products include shea butter as the second ingredient, with avocado oil listed much further down.
The hand creams contain a variety of natural flavors, including vanillin and processed natural fragrances such as limonene and linalool.
Lavender oil is included in the lavender version. The sweet almond version oddly does not seem to include any almond as far as I can tell, but does include vanillin and tonka bean extract.
I have found the scent of the creams to be light and non-objectionable to me, but I still wish that Honest would offer a non-fragranced version.
I feel that this has been a great hand cream in terms of its effects on my skin and have been happy to have found it, though.

Lisa Irritation Level: Mild
Processed Fragrance (Lavender): Natural Fragrance, Lavender Oil

Cost Per Ounce: $2.73
The description of this product reads, “Our hand cream nourishes and hydrates hands to leave them feeling soft and smooth. Made with shea butter, cocoa butter, and avocado oil.”
J.R. Watkins makes hand lotions in four scents – Lavender, Coconut & Honey, Lemon Cream, and Aloe & Green Tea.
A company representative responded to my query by informing me that all four hand creams include only botanically derived rather than synthetically derived scents.
I chose the Lavender version, which is stated as including “natural fragrance” as well as lavender oil.
I am not finding that it smells very much like lavender at all. It is more like a pretty strong baby powder type scent.
While I don’t find this scent to be entirely intolerable, I wish it were not quite as strong.
I also found that the product was slightly annoying to my hands, especially if I had any cuts or other broken skin.
I will say that the cream is nicely moisturizing and absorbs easily into my hands, however.
Shea butter is the second ingredient (after water), with avocado oil, cocoa butter, macadamia oil and jojoba oil providing extra moisturizing benefits.
Although I don’t think that this cream is ideal for sensitive skin (or sensitive noses), I do think that the amount and type of moisturizers included in it are pretty good considering the reasonable price.
I wish the company would offer an unscented version or a version containing only lavender oil.

The description of this product reads, “Enjoy this luxurious moisturizing cream with jojoba and shea butters, Vitamin C, and peptides to achieve brighter, more hydrated and youthful looking hands. With Certified Organic Ingredients to protect humans, animals and the planet.”
This is a light hand cream that seems to be a little more moisturizing than most of the ones that I have tried in actual use.
It does have a bit of a citrus scent, but it is much lighter than is the case with most of the other hand lotions discussed on this page.
I have not found it to be irritating at all and have enjoyed using it.

This product is one of a number of creams on the market containing manuka honey, which has the potential of being helpful in healing wounds.
Especially for skin that is cracked or otherwise compromised, these creams have the potential of being especially helpful.
This one contains MCT oil and hemp seed oil as the main moisturizers.
Sodium hyaluronate, cocoa butter and shea butter also are included.
While this cream is rich enough that I generally use it only at night, I do feel that it has been good for my hands and pleasant to use.
The scent is derived just from lavender oil and carrot seed oil, and has been fine as far as I am concerned.
Some of the other creams containing manuka honey that I have found on websites like Amazon also look like they have the potential of being helpful.

The description of this product reads, “Shea Butter is the ultimate treatment for dry skin. Shea Butter is the best known natural skin moisturizer you can use. It is nourishing, soothing, and healing while protecting the skin from the elements. It provides natural protection from the UV rays that cause sun burn. It can be used all over on the face and body; nose, hair, lips, toes – anywhere that needs moisturizing.”
Other than the Honest hand creams, this is the closest one that I have found to being an acceptably clean alternative to the L’Occitane shea cream.
The scent seems to consist only of lavender oil, and I have not found it to be irritating to my skin at all.
It provides the non-greasy type of moisturizing benefits that I think are ideal in a hand cream to be used during the day.
The product does contain three ingredients that would make it ineligible to be sold at Credo – PEG-100 stearate, ceteareth-33, and laureth-7.
Supposedly this means that the potential for contamination with substances such as solvent chemicals exists, and so that does seem to be a factor to consider.
It also contains benzyl alcohol, which could be an issue for some people.
I do plan to use up this tube of the product and would consider purchasing it again, especially if for some reason the Honest hand creams were to become unavailable to me.
Note, by the way, that Pre De Provence offers a variety of hand creams on its website but does not list the ingredients for any of them.
I obtained the ingredient lists for the lavender one and the unscented one, neither of which include any synthetic fragrance.
It’s my impression that some of the other version may include synthetic fragrance, however. I therefore personally would want to check with the company to make sure before placing an order.

The description of this product reads, “Light, quickly-absorbed hand cream for everyday use. Moisturizes the skin on your hands with nutrient-abundant oils and a fruity-fresh fragrance.”
This cream includes sesame seed oil as the second ingredient, and I agree that it is light and easily absorbed.
The fact that alcohol is listed as the third ingredient may be of note to many people who feel that drying alcohols are problematic in skincare prodcts.
I also found the scent of this product to be somewhat on the strong side, to the point that it would prevent me from buying it again.
It also seems a little hard on my hands, likely due to the inclusion of all the different fragrance ingredients.
My guess is that the Weleda Skinfood and Skinfood Light products are similar to this one in terms of the scent, and so probably I won’t be buying those either after trying this one.
Those who like heavily scented creams might enjoy this one though.

L’Occitane Shea Butter Hand Cream ($30): Like many people, I have long been a fan of the formula of this product but hated the fragrance included in it. The company reformulated the product last year to remove the lilial (which has been banned by the EU), and so I decided to give it another try. Because the company refused to answer my questions about whether the fragrance in the product was derived synthetically (stating only that 95% of the ingredients in the product are natural), I bought a small tube to see what I thought. I feel confident based on this that synthetic fragrance (and of a type that is highly objectionable to me) is still included in the product. Why the company seems to absolutely refuse to offer a version that is unscented or that contains only botanically derived scents when so many people want them to do this, I don’t understand. In any case, the new version of the product receives an 8 (red) from the EWG Build Your Own Report page, with PEG-100 Stearate (3), Ceteareth-33 (3), Polysorbate-60 (3), Natural Fragrance (8), Linalool (3), Coumarin (5), Citronellol (4), Alpha Isomethyl Ionone (5), Limonene (5) and Geraniol (5) being flagged as possibly problematic.
About This Website
The Living Clean in a Dirty World shopping website is designed to provide guidance to those seeking out products that are relatively low in toxicity and that provide generally positive user experiences.
Although the skincare and makeup sections have a particular focus on products appropriate for women who are in their 40’s or beyond, the information provided may be useful for other people as well.
The products are curated by Lisa Petrison, who has been focused on helping people to improve their health by avoiding toxicity since 2008 and who heads the Paradigm Change organization.
Her Living Clean in a Dirty World blog site discusses a variety of topics of relevance to those who are working to pursue a more natural lifestyle with less exposure to harmful toxicity.
Lisa is the author of several books, including A Beginner’s Guide to Mold Avoidance (co-written with Erik Johnson).
She also runs the Paradigm Change website (focusing on issues related to toxic mold illness) and the Mold Avoiders Facebook group (designed for the discussion of all topics of interest to those pursuing the mold avoidance approach described in the “Beginner’s Guide” book).
Lisa was born in August 1964 and has yet to try cosmetic surgery, Botox or other cosmetic treatments requiring interactions with a physician, or beauty products containing retinoids.
In her former life, Lisa worked as a business school professor, as a marketing consultant to a variety of large companies, and as a reporter covering the advertising industry.
She holds a Ph.D. in marketing and social psychology from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University as well as B.S./M.S. degrees from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern.
Lisa would like to extend a special note of appreciation to Ellen Kleiman-Redden for her help in trying out products and discussing issues related to this project.
She also would like to thank the many members of the Mold Avoiders community who have shared suggestions of products to be included here.
A Note From Lisa
Products that I have tried or researched and that I have not found to be acceptable from a toxicity standpoint have been omitted entirely from the discussions on this website.
However, since a goal of this project is to introduce people to a range of options in terms of price and functionality, some products discussed on this site include ingredients that may not be appropriate for everyone.
It’s my hope that all individuals making their way to this site will find at least a few options from each product category that meet all of their own needs and wants from a variety of perspectives.
The vast majority of cosmetics marketers now offer affiliate programs in which Internet content creators may earn commissions if people who are referred to the companies’ sites by clicking on links end up making purchases.
I participate in quite a few individual affiliate programs as well as in the Sovrn/Viglinks program (which automatically converts regular links into revenue-generating links).
