Hand Creams
Description

By Lisa Petrison
The products discussed on this page do not contain any synthetic fragrance, essential oils, or other highly processed fragrance derived from natural sources.
They may include botanical extracts that give them a mild scent, however.
These creams are rated in terms of how they have performed for my very sensitive and very dry skin.
In some cases, I have needed to add additional oils to these creams in order to have them be useful for me.
I have generally used very high-quality organic face oils – such as plum kernel oil, strawberry seed oil or marula oil – to these creams in order to make them rich enough for me.
Insofar as the creams listed here have worked for me when I have added oils, I have not penalized them for not being richer in terms of my ratings of them.
In addition to the hand creams discussed here, I have included a few products intended for face or body use if they have worked especially well for my hands.

Beekman 1802 Pure Goat Milk Hand Cream – $22

Cost Per Ounce: $6.47
The description of this product reads, “Simple pleasures don’t get much more better than this simple yet effective fragrance-free formula combines botanical extracts with softening goat milk to moisturize skin for a pure hydration. Perfect for sensitive skin.”
This product has a pretty clean ingredient list and does not contain any fragrance.
I do not feel that it has irritated my hands.
On the other hand, I don’t feel that it is very moisturizing to my hands.
Although it does contain shea butter and jojoba oil, they are the 7th and 9th ingredients listed.
The product goes on feeling a bit slimy and then dries down to a somewhat slick coating.
Sodium ascorbyl phosphate (a form of vitamin C) is listed as the last ingredient, but I don’t know if that is a large enough amount to be helpful for improving the health or appearance of the hands.
Although I think that the quality of this product is okay enough for me to use, I feel that I need to add a few drops of oil every time I put it on for it to be helpful for me.

The description of this product reads, “As much as we love eating whipped cream, your skin loves drinking in our goat milk whipped body cream. It’s rich in vitamins and minerals and melts in for long-lasting hydration and soft, smooth skin, without feeling greasy. Benefits: An intensive treatment that softens and smooths skin, delivering long-lasting, maximum hydration deep into the skin. Our most luxurious body cream feels silky when applying. Absorbs quickly for instant hydration that lasts.”
This product is richer than the Beekman 1802 hand cream and seems to work better for me during the winter months when my hands are very dry.
It contains coconut oil and sustainably sourced palm oil as the third and fourth ingredients, along with smaller amounts of mango butter, dimethicone and goat milk.
I found the product to feel quite clean to me and to work fairly well for daytime or nighttime use.
The inclusion of steareth-21 would prevent it from being sold at Credo.
I have a trial size product of this cream that I got in a kit, but the company currently seems to be selling the product only in a very large container that would be inappropriate for use on the go.

The description of this product reads, “Get a handle on dry skin with Burt’s Bees Naturally Clean Hand Cream. A convenient size you can take everywhere with you. Keep a tube in your purse, pack in your carry-on, or leave in your bedside drawer for quick-absorbing dry skin relief wherever you need it.”
This product contains a number of botanical extracts and so may have a noticeable scent, but it does not include any synthetic fragrance, essential oils, or processed natural fragrance.
I have tried the scented version and did feel that I liked the underlying formula even thought I felt that the scent was too strong for me.
I have some hope that this one will work out well for me, therefore.

Silicone Level: Moderate
Cost Per Ounce: $1.50
The description of this product reads, “For continuously dry, sensitive skin. This nourishing cream is clinically proven to hydrate and replenish skin for 48 hours to help prevent visibly dry skin from coming back. Specially formulated with a high concentration of shea butter to deeply nourish, safflower seed oil to smooth and soften dry skin, and vitamin E to support moisture barrier function. Transforms dry, dull skin into radiant, healthy-looking skin after 1 use.”
This moderately priced cream contains shea butter as its fourth ingredient and feels fairly moisturizing to me.
However, I feel that the taste of the product is especially objectionable and that I don’t feel great about using it in general.
My skin also does not seem to respond very well to it.
Still, compared to many mainstream mass-marketed hand creams, this seems to be one of the better ones both in terms of the performance and how it performs for me.
I don’t see myself ever using the product again except for testing purposes, however.

Allantoin relieves chapped skin, and protects against the drying effects of wind and cold water, while our Calming Phyto-Blend supports skin barrier health to soothe and calm sensitivity.”
Although this product seems to be intended for the face, I have mostly used it on my hands and have felt that it has been especially helpful to them.
The product has a balm-type consistency that makes it especially appropriate for use at night.
I liked this product enough that I went through a whole jar over the course of last winter and then purchased another one to have on hand for this winter.
The main downside to the product is that it has the potential of going rancid due to the large amount of sunflower seed oil used in it.
I suggest using it up within a few months after purchasing, therefore.

Unlike many eczema creams, this one does not contain any oatmeal-derived ingredients.
While it is slightly on the greasy side, it absorbs quickly and has felt really good on my hands.
It contains safflower oil, coconut oil, shea butter and other moisturizng ingredients.
While I don’t like this cream as much as the Honest ones that are based on shea butter, the fact that this one is unscented may make it much more appealing for some people.

The description of this product reads, “Made with naturally derived ingredients, our gentle-for-babes Face + Body Lotion hydrates and nourishes thirsty skin, leaving it soft + smooth. Made with Safflower Oil, Sunflower Oil, Jojoba Esters, Shea Butter and Vitamin E. Designed for all skin types, and gentle enough for baby.”
This product is available in several scented versions as well as an unscented one. I have tried only the scented version so far.
I felt that the product was a bit on the sticky version for use on my hands, and did not like it as much as either the Honest shea hand cream (which does not come in an unscented version) or the Honest eczema cream for use on my hands.
The small amount of non-organic soybean oil in the product concerns me a bit since that can be contaminated with glyphosate.

The description of this product on the Mineral Fusion website reads, “Deeply restorative Evening Primrose Oil, rich in omega fatty acids, restores moisture while a wrinkle-fighting peptide and naturally exfoliating Glycolic Acid help bring renewed skin to the surface.”
This product is sold as a nighttime face moisturizer, but I feel that it has potential as a hand cream as well.
It comes in a squeeze tube that is appropriate for use as a hand cream, and I have found it to be moisturizing without being greasy or heavy.
It contains organic sunflower seed oil as the third ingredient, along with smaller amounts of hyaluronic acid, avocado oil, organic evening primrose oil, organic rosa canina oil, and organic shea butter.
Smaller amounts of dimethicone and glycolic acid also may help it to be a good hand cream.
The main issue that I see with this product is that it may have some potential of going rancid, due to the high level of sunflower seed oil that is used.
I used some of this cream on my face, but didn’t think of using up the rest of it on my hands until about a year after I purchased it.
The product is stated as having a one-year use life and had started to smell off by the time I tried it on my hands.
However, in general I think that this is fairly well-priced for the quality of the product offered and that the convenience of being able to purchase it at places like Natural Grocers may make it worth considering for some people.

Although this product is marketed as a body lotion, I have personally liked it better for my hands than I have the Necessaire hand cream.
It seems to be considerably more moisturizing, with substantial amounts of shea butter glycerides and jojoba oil listed.
Niacinamide, marula oil, cacay oil and meadowfoam seed oil are also mentioned as being included.
I feel that this product feels unusually clean to me compared to other hand or body creams that I have tried, and that makes me want to use it.

I do think that if I add 1-2 drops of high-quality facial oil (such as marula oil, plum kernel oil or strawberry seed oil) to the product, it turns into something that I find to be pretty much ideal for daytime use.

This hand cream is similar to the popular shea cream offered by L’Occitane, but contains no fragrance ingredients.
It is made in France and contains shea butter as the second ingredient. A small amount of sweet almond oil is also included.
Of concern for those who are sensitive to gluten is the fact that the cream includes hydrolyzed wheat protein.
A few additional potentially problematic ingredients – including benzyl alcohol, benzoic acid, citric acid and lye – also are included.
I have done okay with this product, though, and have not minded using it.
I feel like intuitively I prefer the similar Honest hand creams, which include a slight fragrance but do not have other problematic ingredients, though.

The description of this product reads, “The ultimate relief for extremely dry, cracked, irritated skin and eczema on hands and feet, this sensitive-skin-safe cream visibly restores the skin barrier with three active pharmaceutical ingredients (FDA and Health Canada approved), a blend of supportive botanicals, rich natural butters, and emollient oils. This product is an Allure Best of Beauty award winner.”
I tried this product on a visit to Sephora and didn’t feel that I liked it enough to want to use it again.
As with some of the other eczema-oriented creams, I am suspicious that the oats in it may be contaminated with glyphosate.

The description of this product reads, “A minimalist, fragrance-free moisturizer with a lightweight, non-greasy texture. Dermatologically tested and suitable for sensitive skin. 99% naturally-derived. Developed using only the most essential ingredients, all unnecessary additives have been left out of this formula. The end result? A lightweight hydrating cream comprised of just nine potent ingredients. This cream is suitable for normal to combination skin, including sensitive skin. We do not recommend it for use on oily skin.”
Following are the nine ingredients in this product: 1) water, 2) coconut oil, 3) glycerin, 4) cetyl alcohol (a waxy moisturizer derived from vegetable oils), 5) pentylene glycol (a synthetic humectant), 6) cetyl phosphate (an emulsifier and surfactant), 7) lye, 8) sodium hyaluronate (a hydrator), and 9) o-cymen-5-Ol (a preservative).
This therefore is a coconut-based moisturizer, with the other ingredients mostly seeming to have been added to help the product to feel less greasy on the skin.
This product is a little rich for use as a hand cream but still has worked well for me if I give it a minute or two to sink in.
While it is expensive, I do think that it is a quality product that could be worth considering.

The description of this product reads, “A fragrance-free balm to bring moisture and comfort to dry hands and nails. Dermatologically tested and suitable for sensitive skin. 99% naturally-derived.”
This product has an ingredient list that is quite similar to that of the Typology 9-Ingredient Face Moisturizer, and it has performed about the same on my hands as the face cream has.
I think that either of these may serve as an acceptable hand cream, especially for those who do well with coconut oil as a main ingredient in moisturizers.

The description of this product reads, “Tasked with reducing the appearance of fine lines caused by dehydration, this cream is formulated with hydrating hyaluronic acid. We also include nourishing squalane and shea butter to make the skin more soft and supple. An active-rich moisturizer to restore suppleness and comfort to dry, tight skin. 98% naturally-derived. This cream is suitable for all skin types, especially for dry, normal, and combination skin.”
This is a somewhat more expensive product than Typology’s coconut-based moisturizers but has worked especially well for my skin.
The second ingredient is plum kernel oil, which is one of my favorite face oils.
It also contains smaller amounts of squalane, olive oil, sodium hyaluronate, shea butter, and sunflower seed oil.
Although this is an expensive product to use as a hand cream, I have found that I only need to use a small amount of it and that it feels quite clean to me.
I therefore might consider buying it specifically for this purpose, even if I were not intending to use it on my face.

This is a petrolatum-based hand cream that provides a particularly large amount of moisture to the skin.
Petrolatum is an ingredient that has been prohibited by the EU (even though to my understanding Vaseline products continue to be sold there) and that I usually prefer not to use myself because it doesn’t feel great to me.
I do admit that if my skin is feeling especially dry, putting a product containing petrolatum on my skin even one time on an overnight basis can make a major difference for me.
This cream also includes a few other ingredients that (along with the petrolatum) would keep it from being sold at Credo.
These contain ceteareth-20, PEG-30 stearate, and BHT.
Consistent with the package claims that this product is good for sensitive skin, I have not found this product to be irritating to my skin at all.
I therefore might try using it again at some point as an overnight treatment if my hands were really seeming to need some extra help.

The description of this product reads, “Gently calms and comforts sensitive hands. Soothe your hands with gentle care. New, fast-absorbing Unscented Hand Cream with jojoba, borage and coconut oils uses nature’s restorative power to gently moisturize so hands feel silky-soft.”
This is a light, non-greasy cream that contains substantial amounts of jojoba oil and coconut oil.
Smaller amounts of squalane and borage oil also are included.
The product feels clean to me and has not caused any problems with my skin.
I would think about buying it again.

CeraVe Daily Moisturizing Lotion ($6): Because CeraVe is a brand that is recommended by some dermatologists, I tried this product. I felt strongly that it felt like something that I should not be using on my skin and that I did not want to use it. This product – like the similar CeraVe Therapeutic Hand Cream ($11) – contains parabens (meaning that the version sold in the U.S. is not allowed in Europe) and a number of other problematic ingredients. EWG gives the product a 6 (yellow), flagging the dimethicone (3), ceteareth-20 (3), behentrimonium methosulfate (4), methylparaben (4), propylparaben (9), and polysorbate-20 (3).

About This Website
The Living Clean in a Dirty World shopping website is designed to provide guidance to those seeking out products that are relatively low in toxicity and that provide generally positive user experiences.
Although the skincare and makeup sections have a particular focus on products appropriate for women who are in their 40’s or beyond, the information provided may be useful for other people as well.
The products are curated by Lisa Petrison, who has been focused on helping people to improve their health by avoiding toxicity since 2008 and who heads the Paradigm Change organization.
Her Living Clean in a Dirty World blog site discusses a variety of topics of relevance to those who are working to pursue a more natural lifestyle with less exposure to harmful toxicity.
Lisa is the author of several books, including A Beginner’s Guide to Mold Avoidance (co-written with Erik Johnson).
She also runs the Paradigm Change website (focusing on issues related to toxic mold illness) and the Mold Avoiders Facebook group (designed for the discussion of all topics of interest to those pursuing the mold avoidance approach described in the “Beginner’s Guide” book).
Lisa was born in August 1964 and has yet to try cosmetic surgery, Botox or other cosmetic treatments requiring interactions with a physician, or beauty products containing retinoids.
In her former life, Lisa worked as a business school professor, as a marketing consultant to a variety of large companies, and as a reporter covering the advertising industry.
She holds a Ph.D. in marketing and social psychology from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University as well as B.S./M.S. degrees from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern.
Lisa would like to extend a special note of appreciation to Ellen Kleiman-Redden for her help in trying out products and discussing issues related to this project.
She also would like to thank the many members of the Mold Avoiders community who have shared suggestions of products to be included here.
A Note From Lisa
Products that I have tried or researched and that I have not found to be acceptable from a toxicity standpoint have been omitted entirely from the discussions on this website.
However, since a goal of this project is to introduce people to a range of options in terms of price and functionality, some products discussed on this site include ingredients that may not be appropriate for everyone.
It’s my hope that all individuals making their way to this site will find at least a few options from each product category that meet all of their own needs and wants from a variety of perspectives.
The vast majority of cosmetics marketers now offer affiliate programs in which Internet content creators may earn commissions if people who are referred to the companies’ sites by clicking on links end up making purchases.
I participate in quite a few individual affiliate programs as well as in the Sovrn/Viglinks program (which automatically converts regular links into revenue-generating links).
Reader comments about products discussed on this website are very welcome.
