Skin Tints

This page discusses foundations that offer lighter coverage and that do not contain SPF.
Some of these include silicones while others do not.
Although silicone is a synthetic ingredient, it is not one that tends to be directly irritating to the skin.
Rather, the main problem with silicone in foundation seems to be that it can create a very effective (and in some cases waterproof) shield on the face that can trap oil, dirt, sweat, dead skin cells, bacteria, fungi and other debris – with the resulting muck causing irritation to the skin and making breakouts more likely.
Silicones – perhaps especially cyclic silicones such as cyclopentasiloxane – also are said to be bad for the environment.
Despite these downsides, it’s my experience that silicone-based foundations often look especially nice on skin that has wrinkles or other textural issues and that they can be very easy to apply.
While most silicone-based foundation formulas also include other problematic ingredients, some look pretty clean to me.
While wearing this kind of foundation regularly probably is not optimal for anyone’s skin quality, I think more occasional use may not be all that damaging to the skin and certainly may be helpful in achieving a pretty look with minimal effort.
Wearing the product for a limited amount of time and then removing it thoroughly does seem important though.
Unfortunately, water-based cleansers do not remove silicones very well at all unless they include large amounts of surfactants (which can irritate the skin).
I have had the most success using a double cleanse, where I first use an oil-based cleanser to remove the silicone and then use a regular water-based cleanser to remove the oil.
While this method seems to work for most of the silicone-based foundations that I have tried, it has not seemed to be sufficient for the ones that (like the MAC Studio Radiance and Tarte Hydroflex products) are labeled as being waterproof.
I am inclined to avoid silicone-based foundations labeled as waterproof for that reason.

The description for this product on the Aveda website reads, “Infused with 100% mineral derived pigments and nourishing plant emollients, our Inner Light Mineral Tinted Moisture instantly increases radiance, delivers moisture upon application and provides a smooth, even complexion for flawless radiance.”
This product used to have sunscreen in it, but a few years ago the company removed the SPF without changing the product name and many people wrote negative reviews of the product on the company website as a result.
I have tried both versions and think that the one without the sunscreen is a little better in terms of wearability and appearance.
However, it still seems to make me look worse as a result of emphasizing my wrinkles and also provides little coverage of problem areas.
The product is listed as containing some natural fragrance as well as PEG-100 stearate.
I don’t feel like it has much of a smell and also do not feel that it has irritated my skin.

The description of this product reads, “That feeling of unhooking your bra …. but for your face. Burs what you want. glows all the rest.”
I applied this product to my face during a Sephora visit and found that my skin was able to tolerate the product without irritation.
Although the product has a slight floral scent, the Caliray website states that it is entirely botanically derived. I did not personally find the scent to be objectionable.
Compared to many of the other “clean beauty” skin tints that I have tried, this one felt quite a bit drier on my skin, meaning that I would need to wear it over quite a bit of moisturizer.
Although the product does include a few skincare ingredients (including jojoba oil and prickly pear extract), the fact that it is not really oil-heavy may be appealing to those whose skin is not terribly dry or who prefer to use their own skincare regimen.
I found the coverage level to be a little higher than I have experienced with many other products. I might need to mix this with a bit of moisturizer to get really light coverage, and I think that it could be fairly easily built up to get to a medium level.
While I wouldn’t say that the product made my skin look better, I also don’t feel that it emphasized my wrinkles or other textural issues as much as some of the foundations that I have tried.
It seemed to hold up on my skin pretty well over the course of the day.
Apart from the natural fragrance and some sodium benzoate (a preservative), the ingredient list looks pretty good to me.
I tried Shade 4 (“light with a warm undertone”) in this product and it seemed to look fine on my skin.
All in all, I feel that this foundation likely could be a very good choice for many people, even though I personally am not feeling that interested in using it again.

The description of this product reads, “A first-of-its-kind versatile makeup product infused with ultra-concentrated micro-droplet pigments. The medium-coverage formula offers customizable application: Conceal specific areas or apply all over. For a flawless, incredibly natural-looking finish. Composed of 60% water, Les Beiges Water-Fresh Complexion Touch features a lightweight gel texture that delivers a unique cooling sensation. Antioxidant-rich ingredients, including jasmine extract, help shield skin from pollution and other environmental aggressors. Emollients such as tamarind extract, which is known for its hydrating properties, leave the complexion looking plump, fresh and well-rested.”
This new foundation (released in Summer 2022) from Chanel does not include any fragrance, and I have been able to tolerate it without experiencing any irritation.
All the other Chanel foundations contain synthetic fragrance, with the other one that I tried making my skin itch.
This new foundation is similar to the Rose Inc. and Jane Iredale Liquid Minerals foundations, in that it includes “micro-droplets” of pigment suspended in a clear base.
However, this one has more pigment than the others and is supposed to provide medium coverage.
Chanel instructs users to mix the foundation on the back of the hand to break up the micro-droplets before applying it to the face.
A small brush of pretty nice quality is included to make application easier.
While I usually opt for products with lighter coverage, I enjoyed using this foundation quite a bit.
I felt that it worked well for me when used lightly on my face and that it looked natural on me even when I put on enough to give me more coverage.
Especially compared to other higher-coverage foundations without much silicone that I have tried, this one seems to be especially good at not emphasizing my wrinkles and giving me a more youthful look.
I’ve found that it is pretty easy to apply and holds up well on my face.
Considering that the bottle contains only 2/3 of an ounce of product, this is a rather expensive foundation (as would be expected from Chanel).
I was shade matched for the No. 1 de Chanel foundation in an Ulta store and so purchased the same shade – BD21 – in this foundation.
That shade is slightly darker than my skin tone, but Chanel does not make a lighter foundation that leans warm and so this one seemed the best choice.
I think that the color looks nice on me.
I would consider buying this product again if I ever needed a foundation offering higher coverage.

The description of this product reads, “Silky, nourishing mineral coverage. This nourishing oil serum foundation evens the appearance of skin tone and blurs imperfections, while letting the beauty of natural skin show through. Can be worn on its own as tinted skin care or layered on top of moisturizer, shea butter or serum. For an ethereal dewy glow, mist skin with HydroSoul after application. Can be set with your favorite finishing powder for a satin finish. Amplify natural beauty while infusing the skin with antioxidants and moisturization. Nourishing argan, rejuvenating rosehip and harmonizing jojoba organic oils. Organic broccoli seed oil acts as a natural alternative to silicones, giving this simple tinted serum a smooth, silky finish.”
This newer oil-based foundation contains only seven ingredients, with all of them except for the tocopherol and mineral pigments being organically derived.
I liked it much more than I expected and have been drawn to wearing it pretty frequently, even on days where I usually would not be inclined to wear any foundation at all.
It feels quite good on my skin and gives me what I think is a more refined and pretty look, without it appearing that I am wearing any makeup at all.
The coverage is sheer (though it can be built up a bit by layering it), but I feel that it improves the finish of my skin enough that is worth using anyway.
I’ve not experienced any irritation from the product and have been impressed with the ingredient list.
Although the product does not provide as much coverage as some of the other oil-based foundations that I have tried recently, I think that taken on its own terms it is a quite good product that I would buy again.

I obtained a small sample of this product and so tried it out on half of my face. While I don’t feel that I have had enough experience with the product to give it a rating, I felt that it was okay on my skin and that it looked nice without drawing much attention to texture issues.

The description of this product on the Glossier website reads, “In the land between bare skin and makeup makeup exists the imperceptible wash of color that is Perfecting Skin Tint. Breathable, ultra-thin formula evens out skin’s appearance for a smooth, dewy finish. Diamond Powder gives a brightening, soft-focus effect and minimizes the appearance of pores, while Glycerin moisturizes skin. Comes in 12 super sheer, adaptable shades that won’t hide your freckles, cake your pores, or cover you up.”
Although the Glossier brand seems to be targeted almost solely toward people under age 40, by far the most popular review of this foundation was written by an older woman extolling the virtues of it for her own skin.
She writes: “I’m 70 and yes I know, out of Glossier’s regular demographic. I have tried so many foundations and have never been able to find a good match and a good texture. As you get older especially you do not want that heavy look. It just emphasizes the lines and wrinkles. At the same this it is nice to have something that evens you out and protects your skin….I used the pictures, found someone with a similar complexion to mine and just went for it. I was amazed to find the match was perfect. After application it seemed ok, walked away for a few minutes then looked again, my skin just looked good. This is far and away the best I’ve ever used and very reasonably priced.”
I agree with the reviewer that this foundation looks better on my skin than many of the other products that I have tried.
It goes on smoothly and easily, creating a natural-looking blurring effect that does not seem to emphasize my wrinkles or other textural issues.
I don’t feel that the product has irritated my skin at all.
Although the coverage level is light, I do think that my skin looks a little better when I am wearing it.
The finish is primarily matte, but with a soft sheen that looks basically just like lightly moisturized skin.
Although it contains several different kinds of silicone, it seems somewhat breathable and does not feel uncomfortable on my skin even when it is hot outside.
The use of the cyclic silicones cyclopentasiloxane and cyclohexasiloxane would prevent the product from being sold by Credo, and it also contains chlorphenesin as a preservative.
I have G9 (“a warm medium shade”). It is a little darker than my skin but has seemed to work well for me, especially during the summer months.

The description of this product reads, “What The…Foundation? WTF is a tinted moisture balm meets traditional foundation. WTF includes skin-nourishing ingredients like Jojoba Oil and Sodium Hyaluronate; works flawlessly with the Face Pencil; and offers buildable, light-medium coverage. Choose from one of 12 shades, created to blend across all skin tones. WTF is a first of its kind innovation in the clean beauty space.”
This product generated a great deal of attention and controversy on TikTok and other social media platforms during its introduction in Spring 2022.
While some of the buzz seems to have been purposely manufactured, I do think that this is a rather original product with especially salient pros and cons.
The main pro is basically that this is a very dewy foundation that has the potential of creating a very pretty glow when used in the right way.
I actually think that this product has often made me look several years younger than I do wearing no makeup or any other makeup product that I have tried. So this may be a very appealing feature, especially for more mature women.
On the other hand, the product has a whole slew of drawbacks that can make it rather challenging and frustrating to use.
For instance, it’s my experience that this product works well for me in cooler weather but that it turns into a big mess whenever the temperature goes up to about 75 degrees or higher.
Even in cooler weather, I would not want to wear this foundation if I expected to be sweating at all since even gently wiping off the perspiration causes all the foundation to disappear along with it.
Humidity does not seem to be much of a friend to this foundation either. My skin seems to do best with it when the air is cool and dry.
Although it is okay to use things like non-oily serums or sunscreen under this foundation, products such as moisturizers or facial oils likely should be omitted entirely since the product is already on the very oily side.
While primers without silicone may very useful under the WTF, primers with silicones should be avoided with it since those may cause oil-based foundations (including this one) to just slide right off the face.
In addition, the foundation does not seem to me to work very well with Jones Road’s other best-known product, their tinted Miracle Balm. (The company’s lip/cheek stick may be used instead.)
Temperature changes during transit or after receipt have the tendency to cause the foundation inside the glass jar to separate or to develop little grains of solid oil. While the product can be stirred back together and while supposedly these issues do not interfere with the performance of the product, many users report them to be frustrating nonetheless.
This foundation seems to only like being applied with fingers (rather than with a brush or beauty sponge), and some people don’t like having to put on their makeup in that way.
In addition, some people see having to scoop the foundation out of the jar with their fingers as unhygienic. (Jones Road does sell a wonderful little metal scoop that can be used with the WTF or other cream beauty products, but it does not come with the foundation and most people apparently are not purchasing it.)
The glass jar is heavy and has the potential to leak, and thus may not be very appropriate for travel purposes.
Like some other cream foundation products, this one seems to have the tendency to look best a few hours after application rather than right out of the jar.
Because the Jones Road WTF is oil-based, it may be inappropriate for those with oilier skin.
Even on those like me who have dry skin, the product never dries down completely and instead feels at best semi-tacky on the skin. Some women with longer hair even report that it gets stuck to their face when they use this product.
While setting powder can decrease the stickiness of the foundation, it also reduces the glowiness a bit.
WTF is available in only 12 shades, meaning that there is no ability to choose a shade with an appropriate undertone.
When I have swatched this product on my hand next to other foundations that I own, I feel like the WTF seems to have a little more gray in it. While this seems to be an excellent thing for my own complexion, some people may find that the product does not look good on their skin for that reason.
While I think the product looks really nice on me when applied to achieve light coverage, I don’t consider it to be very buildable since adding additional layers results in my face having more moisturizer on it than I ever would want.
The goal with the product seems less to cover things up and more to improve the finish of the skin. (The Jones Road Face Pencils or another concealer can be used along with the WTF for spot coverage.)
Another problem for some people is that the product has a pretty strong smell from essential oils (including rose geranium oil and ginger oil).
While I do not personally mind the smell, I do find that (apparently because of the essential oils used) the product has a tendency to irritate my skin, causing it to feel itchy in a way that increases the longer that it remains on my face.
(The Jones Road Miracle Balms and Shimmer Oils also use substantial amounts of essential oils – apparently as preservatives – and annoy my skin in the same way.)
Eventually I realized that if I use a non-silicone primer (such as the ones sold by Vapour or Beautycounter) under the WTF foundation, the skin itching issues do not occur and the foundation works for me.
In addition, I have found that mixing some non-silicone primer into the foundation before applying it helps to make it behave a bit better but does not entirely eliminate all of the issues with it.
Despite the many challenges associated with this product, I still have a tremendous amount of real fondness for it since I believe that I never look better than when I am wearing it if all the conditions are right.
However, I have given up entirely on trying to wear it during the summer and (in the interest of simplifying my life) usually opt for something less finicky even when the weather is cooler.
For special occasions in cooler weather – such as going to an event or getting photos taken – I have started using this product consistently due to the fact that it does reliably make me look better.
I have the second-lightest shade, Fair, in this product. It seems to be fine for me.

Because it does not contain sunscreen, I decided to give it a try even though EWG lists a number of ingredients that I feared might be problematic for me.
The MAC counter makeup artist applied the foundation over MAC primer on one side of my face and straight onto my skin on the other side.
I thought that the makeup performed really well on both sides of my face, without causing any noticeable irritation at all.
In addition, I thought the product was really pretty on my skin. It did not seem to emphasize my wrinkles or make me look older, and I don’t think that it was obvious to others that I was wearing any foundation at all.
By the end of the day, the foundation seemed to be going strong. In fact, it adhered so well to my skin that I had to make a special effort to use a few different kinds of makeup removers (in addition to my usual cleansing cream and warm water) before I felt that it was removed from my skin.
Personally, I’m not really looking for makeup to adhere to my skin quite so tightly, and so I doubt I would wear this product too often if I bought it.
I do think that the makeup looks very nice on me and holds up very well, though.
Problematic ingredients in this product include talc (not stated as being tested for asbestos), triethanolamine (a surfactant associated with immunotoxicity), phenoxyethanol and chlorphenesin (preservatives), polysorbate-20 (a surfactant that is on Credo’s “dirty list”), farnesol (a processed fragrance usually derived from the acacia tree), and orange oil.
The product is available in 30 shades.
The makeup artist chose the shade N-0 (the lightest neutral shade) for me and then suggested C-1 (the second-lightest warm shade) as an option. I thought that both of these looked okay on my skin.
Note that the MAC lettering system (for cool/neutral/warm colors) seems totally screwy to me and that visiting a MAC counter or store to get shade-matched may be especially worthwhile.

Free of fragrance, dyes, parabens, phthalates, sulfates and alcohol.”
This foundation was introduced in 2022.
Considering the reasonable price and the fact that it is from Neutrogena (which is owned by Johnson & Johnson), I have been very impressed with it.
The ingredient list contains a total of eight (!) different kinds of silicone and few other ingredients.
Despite that, the product looks very nice on my skin and has not seemed to be as difficult to remove as has been the case with some silicone-based foundations that I have tried.
The coverage is fairly light, but I feel that the texture of the product does a good bit to blur imperfections and create a prettier finish for my skin.
I don’t feel that it has been irritating to my skin at all.
While I keep wanting to say that this is a good product for the price, in truth I think that I would think well of the product even if it cost 5x what I paid for it.
I have used it more than I anticipated and might consider buying it again.
I have the shade Light 03 (Light Neutral) and it seems okay for me.
Oddly, I did not find much helpful information on choosing a shade on the Neutrogena site but did get some information from the Target site.

The description of this product reads, “Water-based tinted face gel evens out skintone and gives complexion a flawless no-makeup look. Contains antioxidant-rich green tea, moisturizing rose water, soothing english chamomile, and relaxing lavender. Suitable for even the most sensitive skin.”
This foundation contains a number of different kinds of silicone but. no other ingredients considered by EWG to be problematic.
I was hoping that it would work for me, but it did turn out to be mildly irritating to my skin.
In addition, despite not containing any processed fragrance, it does have a distinct scent that reminds me of something that I might encounter in a shampoo.
The product does contain several different kinds of botanical extracts, including Roman chamomile, lavender and purslane. Cabbage rose hydrosol also is included.
I may have a mild allergy to chamomile (which is similar to ragweed), and I am not sure I have used any other cosmetics that contain purslane.
This foundation is quite sheer and provides very little coverage, but the finish of my skin looked slightly better when I was wearing it.
I don’t feel that the product made my wrinkles look worse or caused other issues.
I do not plan to use it again due to the irritation issues, however.

The description of this product reads, “A hydrating skin tint that bridges the gap between powerful skincare and luminous makeup to instantly deliver sheer, radiant coverage. Pigment spheres are suspended within a skincare base infused with hyaluronic acid to visibly plump and smooth the appearance of fine lines, squalane to weightlessly hydrate the skin, and peptides to help protect against environmental damage. Upon application with Number 3 Foundation Brush, the microencapsulated pigment bursts on contact and effortlessly blends across the face, blurring the complexion for a luminous finish.”
This foundation (introduced in 2021) seems to me very similar to the Jane Iredale Liquid Minerals foundation, but this one is available in 14 shades (with about half of these appropriate for darker skin tones).
It also is said to be similar to the Chanel Les Beiges Water-Fresh Tint, which I have not tried because it unfortunately contains synthetic fragrance.
(The Chanel Les Beiges Water-Fresh Complexion Touch listed above does not contain fragrance but provides more coverage.)
I really like this product and feel that it has performed well for me.
It feels good on my skin and provides a little coverage while looking pretty natural.
It may be a little better than the Jane Iredale formula (which I also really like) in terms of not exaceerbating my wrinkles, though I still tend to avoid putting any of it in my crows’-feet area.
I think that the texture feels like I am wearing nothing other than basic skincare, rather than having (say) the overly oily feeling that some of the other foundations on this page have given me.
I also feel that the foundation goes on pretty easily and smoothly even when I just use my fingers rather than the brush to apply it.
I have the Shade 030 (“light skin tone, warm golden undertone”) and feel that it has worked well for me.
I have used quite a bit of this foundation and would consider buying it again.

The description of this product reads, “This lightweight skin tint adds a touch of sheer color—providing a more even, healthy appearance while infusing skin with hydration. Its weightless, fluid formula helps diminish the look of redness, pores and uneven skin tone. Layers beautifully for sheer-to-light coverage with a natural finish in flexible shades. Glide it on for a fresh, no-makeup look.”
This is a slow-drying and extremely sheer skin tint that gives very little actual coverage but that does have some potential of improving the finish of the skin.
It contains a few silicone-type substances (polymethylsilsesquioxane and trimethylsiloxysilicate) pretty far down on the ingredient list.
I have found that this product is consistently mildly irritating to my skin, making it feel itchy and uncomfortable.
I also have noticed some increased redness around my nose and in other scattered areas when (on several different occasions) I have worn this product.
Apart from the irritation factor, I feel like this product is similar to the Glossier or Haus Labs foundations in terms of the finish that is given, though I don’t feel like it looks as nice on my skin as either of those.
It seems to wear quite well during the day, though perhaps that is just because it looks so similar to my skin that any wear issues are just not noticeable to me.
Although it is possible to build this foundation up a bit by adding an extra layer, I don’t feel that the product is designed for that.
It more seems designed just to improve the appearance of the skin having a nice texture and to even out the color a bit.
While it could be that putting a primer under the foundation would stop the irritation for me, this product is so sheer that I can’t really see the point in that.
Probably just because I liked the name, I really wanted this product to work for me and gave it more chances than it probably deserved.
The product does get pretty good consumer reviews and so perhaps I am just reacting to something in it idiosyncratically, though.
It is available in 10 shades, most of which seem designed for people with darker skin tones.
I have Shade 3 (“light with golden undertones”) and the shade match seems pretty good to me.

The description of this product reads, “A silicon-free, non-clogging tinted serum for light coverage and a natural no-makeup finish. Formulated with Vitamin C for radiance and squalane & aloe vera for deep, long-lasting hydration. 99% naturally derived formula.”
This product is made by Typology, a French company focusing mostly on skincare products.
They started selling this foundation in the U.S. in early 2022 (with the product that I ordered being sent to me directly from France).
I found this product to work very well for me, offering very nice skincare benefits without looking too greasy or shiny.
Unlike some skin tints, this one builds up easily to offer a fair amount of coverage if needed.
Especially important to me is that it does not seem to cause the wrinkles or other textural issues on my face to look worse.
It more looks like I am not wearing any makeup at all, while still providing some evening-out of my skin tone.
I do feel like this product is good for my skin, without causing any irritation or other problems.
The only issue that I have had with it is that it’s been a little hard for me to get very much product out of the bottle with the dropper provided. Sometimes I have to stick the dropper into the bottle multiple times in order to get the few drops that I need onto my palm.
In reading other user reviews, though, I don’t think that this is a consistent problem for everyone. So probably this is just a defect in the dropper that I received, in which case I should ask for a replacement.
All in all, especially considering the reasonable price, this is one of my favorite foundations.
I anticipate buying another bottle at some point.
