Although I have found some powder shadows that look nice on me, I feel that cream shadows tend to work better for me in terms of de-emphasizing the textural issues on my eyelids and creating an overall pleasing look.
Cream shadows also often seem to be especially suited to the “one-and-done” eyeshadow look that I usually use (when I use eyeshadow at all).
I mostly use eyeshadows in the medium-taupe family, applied to extend a little above the crease of my eyelids, with the goal of making my hooded eyelid area recede a bit and therefore to place more emphasis on my eyes themselves.
I tend to enjoy shadows with a bit of shimmer, especially when dressing up but even as a day look.
I am especially fond of eyeshadow sticks, which I have found to go on especially quickly and to look very nice without my needing to put any effort at all into thinking about them.
Although I have found a few different eyeshadow sticks that have worked well for me, I would like to see more options with relatively clean ingredients become available.
In addition to the products listed on this page, I have found that the Rituel de Fille Inner Glow Creme Pigment (discussed on the Bronzers & Contours page) and all of the Living Clean Superstars on the Cream Highlighters page have worked for me as eyeshadows.

The description of this product reads, “Light lids up in a blink with this cream shadow that effortlessly delivers glowy, buildable color. The instantly illuminating shades are made to glow how you want to—easily going from a sheer wash of color to a seriously smokey look—in hues that complement a variety of skin tones. Bonus: The weightless, crease-free formula is infused with safer, soothing ingredients designed to care for eyelids. Glowy, never glittery color that instantly illuminates eyes and won’t crease with wear. Cooling cucumber and calming chamomile help soothe and hydrate, while coconut oil and shea butter nourish delicate eyelids. The double-duty doe foot applicator (and your fingers) are the only tools you need. Apply anywhere and everywhere for a quick wash of color, a seriously smokey look, or even subtle liner. Each shade is formulated with a unique blend of pearlescent micas for a light-catching, soft-focus effect that’s glowy, not glittery.”
This is a liquid eye shadow that is applied with a doe-foot applicator.
Although I have not found it as difficult to work with as some other similar products, I do feel that I have been more successful with it when I have used a stiff eye brush to smooth it into my eyelids rather than relying on my fingers for that.
I have the Prism (“satin golden olive”) shade in this product and think that it looks very nice on me.
It seems to hold up pretty well through hours of wear.
I have not felt that the product has caused me any irritation, and the ingredient list looks okay to me.

The description of this product reads, “Light up your lids with a nourishing, creamy eye shadow that applies effortlessly with your fingertips. The Rose Cream shade adds a pretty, pinky gold shimmer to your eyelid or brow. The Honey Caramel shade evokes the warm, rich glow of honey and toasted caramel with a subtle shimmer. The Caramel Buttercream shade gilds your lid or brow with a light gold shimmer and just a hint of warm, buttery caramel. Buildable colors multi-task as a highlighter.”
These affordable pot eyeshadows from Burt’s Bees are available in three shimmery but neutral colors.
I tried both the Honey Caramel and the Caramel Buttercream and thought that the colors of both of them were pretty on me.
I didn’t experience any irritation from the product.
However, I do feel that the consistency of these shadows was dry to the point that the product was difficult to apply.
Because the Burt’s Bees eye primer (which comes in a similar pot) that I purchased was clearly dried up to the point of being unusable, I feel like probably these eyeshadows are not intended to be this dry either.

The description of this product reads, “Sheer wash of lightweight, creamy colour slips on. Layerable and long-wearing. Versatile, too. Glide one on for a swift wash of colour. Contour with another to add depth, and yet another to highlight. There’s no need to stop at just one. Appropriate for sensitive eyes and contact lens-wearers.”
These shadows go on super-easily (with literally just one swipe across each lid ending up being perfect for me) and are available in seven pretty colors.
All the shades have a slight shimmer that I think works really well for daytime as well as dressier occasions.
They contain only a very small amount of silicone and last for longer if I am wearing some kind of eyelid primer.
However, they go on very nicely and hold up adequately even if I just put them on my bare lids.
Especially considering that these eyeshadows are from Clinique and contain many ingredients with long names, it does not seem to me that they are too bad from a toxicity standpoint.
EWG does not list anything as problematic other than tocopheryl acetate (which I have concluded is not too much of a concern for me) and a few coloring agents.
I have used these sticks quite frequently and they do not seem to have irritated my eyes at all.
My favorite shade is Lots O’ Latte (a shimmery taupe). I also really like the Lavish Lilac (purple) and Walloping Willow (green) colors. These all have worked well as one-and-done eyeshadow colors for me.
The Bountiful Beige (linen) and Ample Amber (light reddish beige) are pretty but much more muted.

Problematic Colorings (Deep Teal Shimmer): Ferric Ferrocyanide, Yellow #5
Problematic Colorings (Mint Matte): Yellow #5, Yellow #6, Red #6, Red #28, Red #7, Blue #1, Ferric Ammonium Ferrocyanide
The description of this product reads, “Clean, transfer-proof, multi-use pigment paints that leave skin feeling moisturized and nourished for 12 hours. HausTech Powered with Plant Squalane + Hyaluronic Acid. 11 full coverage mattes + 9 sheer shimmers. These hydrating, waterproof pigments deliver 12 hours of comfortable wear and superior color intensity on the eyes, lips, cheeks + body. No creasing or flaking. Highly blendable and easy to use. Clinically, Dermatologist + Ophthalmologist tested. Some shades have usage restrictions.”
These pigment paints (introduced by Haus Labs in Summer 2022) are brightly colored and designed for artistic use anywhere on the face.
However, the Haus Labs website states that some shades are not appropriate for use on the eyes. These include Magenta Shimmer, Scarlet Matte, Flame Matte, Sapphire Matte, and Fuchsia Matte.
Apparently the rationale is that these contain more problematic coloring agents.
I find this to be a little confusing since I am not sure what most people would do with the Sapphire Matte version except use it as eyeshadow and since a Haus Labs photo shows a model who is posing with Lady Gaga and wearing that color as eyeliner under her eyes.
In addition, the Haus Labs website states at the top of the page that these pigments can be used anywhere on the face and then only reveals the restrictions for particular colors in the Details/Ingredients section of the website (which is only viewable on the page when the relevant sections are manually opened).
Sephora does state prominently (and in capital letters) on its website that those paricular pigments are not suitable for use on the eyes, but I did not realize that was the case when looking at the pigments in a Sephora store.
However, I tried on the shade Deep Teal Shimmer (which does not have usage restrictions) in the store and was surprised to find that I rather liked it.
I just put on a thin layer and thought that it looked pretty on my eyes, without causing any noticeable irritation.
The ingredient list for that particular shade seems okay enough that I would consider it to be a Living Clean Superstar, but I don’t feel confident enough about the other shades (even the ones without usage restrictions) to give the whole line that designation.
In general, I do find some of the more dramatic looks that people are able to achieve using the pigment paints to be interesting and fun.
I also thought the application process was pretty easy compared to what I have experienced with some other liquid eyeshadows.
I would suggest carefully checking into the usage restrictions on particular colors and running the ingredient list for the particular shade through the EWG Build Your Own Report page before making a purchase though.

The description of this product reads, “It’s your time to shine, babe! Put your inner glow on center stage with our lightweight, buildable liquid eyeshadow, ranging in 6 dazzling colors with high-impact shimmer. Our blendable, quick-drying formula glides on easily and dries down in seconds, so you can get your shimmer on in a wink. Apply one swipe across your eyelid and tap with your finger or brush to blend how you like. Repeat to build intensity. Formulated with our Clean Power Technology to create lasting wear, this water-based liquid shadow delivers a smooth, full-color finish with an airy feel. Safe for sensitive eyes and contact lens wearers.”
This liquid eyeshadow was introduced in 2022 and is available in six shades. I tried New Love (“taupe”).
Compared to some other liquid eyeshadows, this one went on pretty smoothly and blended out easily for me.
One layer looks fairly sheer and rather pretty on me. There is some ability for it to be built up by using multiple layers.
While the ingredient list looks pretty clean, unfortunately it did irritate my eyes a little. I’m not sure what the problematic ingredients might be.
This is too bad since it seems that otherwise I might get some nice use out of it.

The description of this product reads, “A clean, cream-to-powder eyeshadow that dries down to a smudge-resistant finish. Choose from 16 matte and chromatic shades. Glides like a cream. Dries like a powder. Liquid Powder Eye Tint is a quick-dry eyeshadow that swipes on effortlessly and locks in without budging or fading. Blend the weightless, water-based formula for a diffused wash of color, or build it up for a bolder look that lasts.”
Although this seems to be a pretty clean product, I have found it to be quite a bit fussier in terms of the application than the shadow sticks or some of the other cream eyeshadows that I own.
Perhaps I am just spoiled because the sticks go on so easily, but I feel like I spend at least 5-10 times as long putting on this shadow as I do many other cream eyeshadows and that this is annoying to me.
I have the shade Fresco, which is a taupe with a slight shimmer that I think is a pretty color.
Unfortunately, the shadow seems to tend to emphasize the wrinkles and unevenness in my eye area unless I am using an eye base.
I have not found it to cause any irritation for me.
This product currently is available in ten shimmer shades and eight matte shades.

The description of this product reads, “The innovative formula you never knew you needed. With a weightless, cushiony texture, this clean eyeshadow imparts a crease-proof wash of luminous color across lids, at the inner corner of the eyes, and along the brow bone. Just A Sec is all it takes to look bright-eyed. Available in six mistake-proof shades.”
These shimmery shadows come in little glass pots and have a whipped texture that is somewhere between a powder and a cream.
They contain several kinds of silicones and also use the preservative phenoxyethanol. The colors are all from natural sources.
I’ve not had any problems in terms of the products being irritating to my eyes.
Although supposedly you can use just your finger to put on these shadows, I have found that not to work very well for me and so instead have been using a small brush – such as the BK Beauty A505 Shimmer Brush – to carefully paint the color onto my eyelids.
I have the colors Pewter (a metallic silver-gray that is a good one-and-done shade) and Linen (a cream color that works well as a highlight).
I would be interested in trying some additional colors of this product.

Jones Road Sparkle Wash – $24

Ingredients Rating: (4 / 5)
Lisa Irritation Level: Mild

Problematic Colorings: None
The description of this product reads, “Magic hour for the eyes. This shimmering, dimensional liquid eyeshadow locks onto the lids all day with zero creasing or moving. Customize the intensity by building for radiant (but never overdone) sparkle. Using the wand, swipe on lids and soften with a finger, then evaluate. For more illumination, continue to build. Sparkle Wash can also be applied over your everyday matte or cream eyeshadow.”
This product provides a wash of sparkly translucent color to the eyelids, either on its own or to complement other eye colors.
This is a glittery rather than shimmery product and therefore is something that I would be inclined to use only for evening looks.
I have the shade So Pretty (“a sheer silvery-brown with silver sparkle”), and it is indeed very pretty.
If I apply this product in a thick layer, it gives my lids a wet sparkly look that is very festive.
Applied more sheerly, it just gives a hint of sparkle that could be appropriate for many evening occasions for me.
The product is suggested as being acceptably clean according to EWG, with just phenoxyethanol and titanium dioxide being listed as problematic.
The product does not meet Drunk Elephant’s clean standards since it contains “drying alcohol.”
Unfortunately, I don’t feel like my eyes like this product very much.
It consistently makes them feel uncomfortable and ache a bit (in the same way that certain eyebrow gels make my eyebrows ache).
I have found that I always feel okay about this product when I first put it on, but then conclude an hour or two later that I need to remove it immediately.
My suspicion here is that the several ingredients that include the term “acrylates” in their names may be responsible, even though EWG does not suggest that that any of these are problematic.
While my reaction to this product has never been anything more than mild, I don’t see myself using it again.

These shadow sticks from Juice Beauty are quite clean and so I decided to give them a try even though the user reviews that I have seen have not been that great.
I tried the shade Mist (“cream”) and found that it went on as quite transluscent, providing me with a little bit of shimmer but otherwise looking as though I was wearing no product at all.
I also found it to be rather on the oily side and thus not to serve very well as an eyelid base.
Maybe some of the other colors would work out better for me, but based on this experience I am hesitant to spend more money to find out.

The description of this product reads, “A clean eyeshadow that glides on like gel watercolor to make your eyes instantly pop, infused with liquid skincare for your lids. Swipe, tap, HOT.”
Compared to some other liquid eyeshadows, these products provide a rather muted effect on the eyelids.
The company describes them as “Gel Watercolor Eyeshadow” and they do create a transluscent but shimmery look that is difficult to build up very much.
I therefore can see how they would be frustrating to those who prefer a more dramatic eye.
I have the Blaze version, which is described as a “neutral bronze.” A total of six colors are offered.
I think this shadow looks nice on me in an understated way, but whether it really makes enough of a difference in terms of my appearance for me to bother putting it on, I don’t know.
I will say that it at least does not seem to be as fussy as – say – the Ilia shadow in terms of my needing to put effort into making it look okay, though.
These are pretty clean products in terms of the ingredient list, and I don’t feel that the one that I have has been bothersome to my eyes at all.

Problematic Colorings: Some shades contain Ultramarines, Ferric Ammonium Ferrocyanide, Ferric Ferrocyanide, or Carmine. Turquoise contains Yellow #5 and Blue #1. Smoke contains Aluminum Powder and thus is not suggested as a good alternative. Some shades have no problematic colorings.
The description of this product reads, “This long-wearing versatile eye shadow stick delivers effortless application with up to 12 hours of high-impact color. Highly pigmented shades glide seamlessly onto lids. Creamy formula gives you plenty of time to smudge, blend, line, fill or define, so it’s easy to create any look. Sets for crease and transfer resistant wear and layers easily over or under other eye shadows in powder and liquid formulas. Fragrance-free.”
So far I have two shades of this product – Vanilla Kiss (which I use as a base color) and Amethyst (a silvery brownish-purple).
While these shadows do include cyclic silicones (which are on the Credo “dirty list”), I have not found them to irritate my eyes at all and have enjoyed using them.
A good thing about these sticks is that the company provides the specific ingredient list for each shade (rather than just using “May Contain” to cover all the ingredients in all the shades).
A very few of the shades include aluminum powder and thus are not suggested as good alternatives.
However, most of the shades (including the ones that I own) contain only natural coloring agents.
While I’m not sure that the wear time with these sticks is quite as long as with the Bobbi Brown sticks, the fact that I know for sure which ingredients are in each shade makes me very interested in trying more of these.

Each of the eleven seamlessly blendable shades contains a mirrorball blend of multi-coloured pearls that dance across the lids. This Cruelty Free product is Vegan and free from Parabens, Talc, fragrance, Nylon 12, D6, D5 and Silicone.”
I tried this eyeshadow in the color Anais (“an antique pewter with sage green undertones. Shot through with a harmonious blend of silver, pale pink and gold glittery pearls”) and really like it.
It gives a rather sophisticated shimmer to my eyelids that is appropriate for day wear if I use it sheerly but that can be built up to a richer golden look for special occasions.
I find this eyeshadow to go on more easily than many of the eyeshadows that I have tried and to hold up well on my eyes.
The product includes a few ingredients that I believe are less than ideal, but I do not feel that it has irritated my eyes at all.
A total of eleven shades are currently available, and I would be interested in trying more of them.

The innovative second skin-like creamy shadow formula blends smoothly over lids and creates seamless, buildable coverage without looking heavy or cakey. Its superior colour purity stays true and will not streak or crease. Pro Longwear Paint Pot can be mixed with other products, like MAC shadows and liners.”
These “paint pots” have performed very well for me in terms of coloring discoloration on my eyelids, serving as a good base for shadow, and not emphasizing my wrinkles.
They come in a variety of shades, including some bright ones that are intended for use as eyeshadows rather than as eyeshadow bases.
I have tried just the neutral shades, including Painterly (“nude beige”), Vintage Selection (“frosted dirty peach”), and Groundwork (“mid-toned neutral taupe”).
While these shadows contain silicones, they are not the cyclic silicones that some people believe to be especially problematic.
Unfortunately, the ingredient list for these products states that they may contain aluminum powder, which causes my eyes to become irritated and which I consider to be unacceptable in general.
I wrote to MAC and asked whether several of their more popular shades (including Painterly, Bare Study, Groundwork, Vintage Selection, Layin Low, Soft Ochre, Contemplative State, Born to Beam, and Bougie) actually contained aluminum powder.
A company representative eventually responded that none of these shades contain any aluminum powder.
A variety of other artificial coloring agents are also listed as being used in some shades, though my guess would be that these are more likely to be included in the brighter colors.
In any case, I have not found the three netural shades that I have tried to be irritating to my eyes and have continued to use them on occasion.

The description of this product reads, “A magical collection of intense, smoldering everlasting color with a rich texture between powder and cream.”
Although these eyeshadows from Rituel de Fille take a little bit of effort to apply, I have found the look that I have been able to achieve from them to be incredibly beautiful and thus have been motivated to make them work.
The product consists of crumbly material (somewhere between a powder and a cream), contained in a small pot.
Because the opening of the pot is very small, a brush is usually suggested to remove the product from the container. (Considering that these products seem to contain only botanicals as preservatives, that probably is a good idea in general in terms of allowing this expensive product to remain fresh longer.)
I have been using a very small eyeshadow brush or the RMS Brightening Brush to accomplish this. A lip brush also works fine.
I scoop up a very small amount of the product with the brush and then carefully put some of it on my eyelids, spreading it out as much as I can with the small brush. Then I take a eyeshadow blending brush to blend the product into my eye area.
The result is a remarkably pretty but fairly natural looking “one-and-done” eye look, due to the beautiful and slightly shimmery colors that Rituel de Fille offers.
In addition to the pretty look, I am especially appreciative of the fact that this is a basically entirely clean product without any artificial colorings or other problematic ingredients.
I have found my eyes to be fine with this product, without any irritation at all.
Rituel de Fille sells samples of these eyeshadows, and so I have been able to try several different colors.
I especially liked the color Half Light (“taupe”) and purchased a full-size jar. It is one of my very favorite eyeshadows, and I use so little of it for each application that I suspect that it will last for a long time.
I also like Love Spell (“copper”), Golden Age (“smoky gold”) and Cultist (“grey-taupe gold”) on my warm complexion and brown eyes.
Serpent de Mer (“bronze violet”) worked less well for me, but I think it would be stunning on someone with a cooler complexion who does well with colors in the purple family.

The description of this product reads, “These magical creations capture the night sky in constellations of scintillating starlight. We have gazed into the stars to conjure dark and mesmerizingly iridescent shades of Celestial Sphere Gelée Eye Gloss, each evocative of the deep cosmos. Every color suspends color-shifting, sparkling mineral pigment in a translucent black gelèe for dramatic, shadowy yet glimmering applications. Use these remarkable iridescent metallic eyeshadows on bare skin, layer over any crème product, or wear on the lips for a rich glossed finish. Each color creates a different bold color effect.”
These are sparkly eyeshadows in bright colors that can be used very sheerly to add just a little glow or applied more heavily for a more dramatic eye.
I have the Serpens shade (“rich, molten, dark gold shimmer eyeshadow in a black gelee base”), which provides a lovely sheer sparkly look that I have been wearing even during the day.
I think that it looks really nice by itself or in combination with other eyeshadows.
If I layer it more thickly, it gives my eyes an effect similar to that of gold leaf that might be fun for a party or other evening event.
I might use a tiny bit of it on my cheeks for a festive party as well.
While all the other shades look much too dramatic for me in the website photos, I suspect that those also may sheer out really nicely with just a faint wash of color that would look good on me.
Probably the next time I buy something from Rituel de Fille, I will order a couple of these as part of a sample set and give them a try.
I have never had any problems with any Rituel de Fille products causing irritation for me, and this eyeshadow has been fine for me as well.

The description of this product reads, “We create the stunning finishes in Metamorphic Highlighters using a very special kind of luxurious pigment. It starts as entirely clear, finely-milled flakes, and is then coated with a thin layer of minerals to manipulate light refraction. Depending on the millimeter thickness of that mineral coating, it may display any shade in the visible light spectrum. This is structural iridescence, the same trait that makes a peacock’s feathers appear green although they contain no green pigment.”
These highlighters are promoted as being usable on all parts of the face, but the colors are so bright that I am having a hard time imagining using them anywhere other than my eyes.

The description of this product reads, “Creaseproof, longwearing color that nourishes while it shines. Available in 6 metallic, buildable shades, these richly textured cream eyeshadows create a luminous, light-reflective finish. It is subtle enough for daytime and buildable for dramatic effects at night. Formulated with organic green tea and natural peptide quinoa extracts, it nourishes and smooths the delicate eye skin with each wear. Also includes a reusable key you can attach to the end of the tube and twist to press every last bit out before recycling.”
These eyeshadows are one of the first products produced by RMS subsequent to their being purchased by Highlander Partners.
Unlike previous RMS products (which included mostly natural ingredients), these shadows contain a long list of laboratory-created chemicals (though mostly ones rated by EWG as relatively non-toxic).
I tried the one of the new eyeshadows in the shade Blaze (“muted silvery mauve”).
The product goes on very smoothly and has a rich sheen.
Personally, I have found that I need to be careful with this one to apply only a very small amount of the product.
It looks pretty dramatic if I put on even a little too much, and it dries so quickly that it is hard to go back and fix any mistakes without removing all of my eye makeup.
The product comes in a small metal tube with a “key” that is designed to help dispense the product as it gets used up.
I suggest not putting the key on the tube until it is really needed to dispense the product, since otherwise it may cause a great deal of the eyeshadow to come squirting out and then to be wasted.
I also advise being careful not to drop the lid to the product on the floor, since it is so small that it may be difficult to find and since the product would likely become unusable almost immediately without the lid.
All in all, I do really like this eyeshadow formula. The product is very pretty but sophisticated looking, goes on smoothly, and stays put basically forever (until it is removed).
I’ve not found it to irritate my eyes at all.
I’d like to try another shade since the silvery one that I tried turned out not to be ideal with my warm skin.

These eyeshadows do not look too bad from an ingredients standpoint and so I decided to give one a try. I chose the shade Game Over, which is a light pinky-taupe shade.
My hope was that it might serve as a good eyeshadow base, but I didn’t feel that the formula allowed it to be very well-suited to that purpose.
On the other hand, the color was too flat and non-descript for it to serve very well as the type of one-and-done eyeshadow that I prefer. Perhaps it would work well in combination with other eye colors though.
Although I didn’t feel that my eyes were exactly irritated by this product, nor have I much wanted to have it on my eyes. I’ve ended up rinsing it off soon after applying it each time I have tried it.
I wonder if the talc that is mentioned in the ingredient list could be contaminated with asbestos or something else problematic.

Lid Lustre’s unique soft press powder technology contains over 60% pearlescent pigments. Due to the delicate nature of this formula, we recommend keeping the disc provided on top of the product to protect in between uses.”
These eyeshadows are unusual because they contain actual quartz, which adds a very pretty sparkle to the product.
EWG suggests that this is a problematic ingredient, rating it as a 6 (yellow) and suggesting that its use in cosmetics is associated with cancer (high), persistence and bioaccumulation (high), and non-reproductive organ system toxicity (moderate).
I tried the product in the Tea Rose shade, which is described as ” a warm rose gold with gold and violet pearl infused with Rose Quartz which is known to promote love, friendship, inner healing and peace.”
I think it looks very pretty on me and do not feel that it has been irritating for me.

The description of this product reads, “Luminous eye shadow trio provides soft definition and a sumptuous finish using only the cleanest ingredients. Formulated with silky emollients for blendability, these shadows have a springy, elastic texture and buildable payoff with zero fallout—intuitive and easy. This cream-powder formula comes in three supremely wearable palettes: warm Les Jours, deep Les Nuits and earthy Rendez-Vous. Innovative magnetic pods snap together or apart for easy portability.”
These eye shadows fall somewhere between a cream and a powder in terms of their consistency.
There are three different sets of three eye shadows each, plus two of the shades are available as singles.
I have just tried a single in Tabac (“a warm bronze”).
The crumbly texture of the product is a little odd and makes it a bit of a challenge to apply the shadow. I haven’t found either a conventional eye shadow brush or my finger to work very well.
At present I am digging a little bit of the product out of the container with a small eye brush (similar to a flat lip brush) while lying on my back and then using that to carefully paint the shadow on my eyelids. Then I use a blender brush to soften it out.
This is a bit of a painstaking process, but it goes quickly and does end up looking pretty nice.
I found the product to emphasize the wrinkling on my eyelids less than most of the powder shadows that I have tried recently but slightly more than the cream shadows that I have liked.
I will say that the Tabac shade has seemed especially beautiful on me.
It is quite a bit more reddish than the online pictures suggested and I was afraid it was going to be a disaster, but it actually looks very natural and really complements my brown eyes.
Although this is not a dramatic eye look at all, the product seems to hold up on my eyes pretty well. I have consistently been surprised by how nice it still looks at the end of the day.
The fact that I do believe that the Westman Atelier line is unusually clean is another positive aspect of the product.
The eyeshadow that I have is packaged in a lovely gold case that I likely will be throwing away when I am done using the product since Westman Atelier does not offer refills for it.
Upon reflection, one thing that irritates me about the Westman Atelier line is the fact that the packaging is so gorgeous, since it serves as a continual reminder that most of the money I spent on the product likely went toward paying for the containers (and the marketing) rather than the ingredients.
Despite all this, I do think that the color of the Tabac eyeshadow is unusually nice.
That makes me interested in trying another shade (such as the dark green one in the Rendez-Vous set), but so far I have resisted that temptation since having to spend $88 on three shadows just to get the one color that I want seems to me on the wasteful side.

Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Cream Shadow Stick ($32): These shadow sticks used to be among my favorite makeup products prior to starting work on this project. Eventually, though, I realized that I am reactive to aluminum powder, which EWG rates as a 9 (red) on its toxicity scale and which is listed in the “May Contain” list for these sticks. I wrote to Bobbi Brown about this and eventually received a list of some shades that did not include aluminum powder (with all the shades that I had been using being on that list). The shades that they said did not contain aluminum powder were Bone, Vanilla, Truffle, Shore, Nude Beach, Taupe and Violet Plum. Unfortunately, in early 2022, Bobbi Brown reformulated the product and introduced some new shades, with aluminum powder again on the “May Contain” list. I wrote to Bobbi Brown again and asked them for information on which shades currently do not include aluminum powder, and the rep said that she would get back to me. So far, though, I have received no response. I thus feel that I cannot suggest that others purchase any of these sticks, even though I will continue to use the ones that I own. The Laura Mercier eyeshadow sticks (which list ingredients for each individual shade, almost none of which include anything that I consider to be especially problematic) may be a good substitute. In addition, Bobbi Brown has a good return policy, and so those who try the shadow sticks and then react to them should be able to get their money back. EWG gives this product a 7 (red), flagging the cyclopentasiloxane (3), titanium dioxide (3), yellow #5 (6), chromium oxide greens (5), chromium hydroxide green (4), ferric ammonium ferrocyanide (4), aluminum powder (9), blue #1 (7), ultramarines (3), and ferric ferrocyanide (4).
Glossier Lidstar ($18): This product went on nicely and looked pretty on me, and so initially I was pretty excited about it. Unfortunately it irritated my eyes in the same way that some other eye products using aluminum powder have. I wish the company would remove the aluminum powder, since this product seems that it would have real potential if it were not for the inclusion of that ingredient. EWG gives the product a 5 (yellow), citing as problematic titanium dioxide (3), aluminum powder (9), ultramarines (3) and ferric ferrocyanide (4).

A Note From Lisa
Products that I have tried or researched and that I have not found to be acceptable from a toxicity standpoint have been omitted entirely from the discussions on this website.
However, since a goal of this project is to introduce people to a range of options in terms of price and functionality, some products discussed on this site include ingredients that may not be appropriate for everyone.
It’s my hope that all individuals making their way to this site will find at least a few options from each product category that meet all of their own needs and wants from a variety of perspectives.
