Day Creams
Description
January 15, 2023
By Lisa Petrison
My skin is dry enough that it needs some good moisture during the day, but it’s important that the day moisturizers that I use also work well with any makeup that I might choose to wear.
I therefore usually use products that include squalane or sodium hyaluronate during the daytime, since these kinds of hydrators usually put a slightly tacky coating on my skin that works well for me under makeup.
Even heavier creams can work fine as day creams if they put this kind of surface on my skin, in my experience.
While some of the products listed on this page are quite expensive, I have not found it necessary to spend a great deal of money to obtain products that work well as daytime moisturizers.
The Honest Hydrogel cream has been excellent for me in all respects (including having a clean ingredients list) and costs only $20, for instance.
Although the products on this page do not include any essential oils or processed fragrances, in some cases they do include botanical extracts that give them a very mild scent.
More heavily scented day creams are discussed on a separate page of this website.

The description of this product on the Beautycounter website reads, “This lightweight lotion adapts to the skin throughout the day to keep up with modern life. Not only does it provide up to 24-hours of hydration —it offers the essential building blocks of hydration, nutrition, and oxygenation to keep skin soft, smooth, and glowing. Featured ingredients: Squalane – derived from olives, it draws moisture into the skin and visibly restores elasticity. Phytic Acid – sourced from rice, this gentle exfoliator boosts radiance and helps skin breathe for a natural-looking glow. Plum Oil – rich in omegas 6, 9 and vitamin E, it helps provide nutrients for vibrant, healthy-looking skin. Shea Butter – helps hydrate and condition skin.”
I have found this product to be simple and clean, without any fragrance or irritating ingredients.
It has served as a good source of hydration and moisture for my face, and works well as a base for makeup.
The product is packaged in a plastic pump container, which I find appealing since it is convenient as well as hygienic to use.
Although a few questionable ingredients (including benzyl alcohol) are included, I have not found the product to irritate my skin at all.
It’s more a product that I turn to when my skin is feeling irritated, to help it get back into shape again.
I probably will buy this product again.

This product is described on the Beautycounter website as follows: “Formulated with our plant-derived Retinatural Complex and Nasturtium flower extract, this velvety, revitalizing cream works to visibly plump and firm the skin while boosting hydration to protect skin from drying environmental stressors throughout the day. Skin is left healthy looking and glowing. Featured ingredients: Retinatural Complex – We took two of the most powerhouse plant-derived ingredients available and created a scientific breakthrough. Bakuchiol has been shown to provide skin-care results that are comparable to retinol—without harmful side effects such as skin irritation and increased sun sensitivity—and Swiss Alpine rose boosts the skin’s antioxidant defense. Nasturtium flower extract (Tropaeolum Majus Flower Extract): Helps reinforce the skin barrier while providing potent oxygenation benefits to protect and defend skin from drying environmental stressors. Fermented Sugars (Biosaccharide Gum-1): This blend of fermented sugars helps soothe skin while helping slow the visible effects of aging by optimizing hydration for renewed skin.”
This day cream is part of Beautycounter’s anti-aging line of products and contains bakuchiol and other ingredients that are said to decrease the appearance of fine lines on the skin.
Although I don’t know how much my wrinkles have been helped by this particular product, I have enjoyed using it and feel that my skin has responded well to it in general.
It has a light, natural, floral scent from the alpine rose and nasturnium extracts that I find to be pleasant.
I also like the fact that this product is dispensed with a pump using a glass jar and a metal top since that feels much more hygienic (as well as more convenient) than dipping my fingers into a jar with a screw-on top.
Unfortunately, this product is really expensive for a day cream.
If I were wealthier and money were no object, this one might be my first pick since I do really like it though.

This is one of the products that is labeled as a night cream but that seems to work okay for me under makeup as well.
The ingredients list includes niacinamide, sodium hyaluronate and dimethicone, as well as some ceramides.
CerVe products are affordably priced and often recommended by skincare professionals such as dermatologists.
The product includes a few potentially problematic ingredients, including ceteareth-20 (an emulsifier that is on Credo’s “Dirty List”); behentrimonium methosulfate (a conditioner that is more often used in hair products); phenoxyethanol (a preservative); and dimethicone (a silicone).
I have found this product to be considerably better than the other CeraVe products that I have tried, but still not something that I much have wanted to use on my skin.
The smell of product has been neutral and acceptable for me.
Because this is a reasonably priced product, it could be one for people with limited amounts of money to spend on skincare to consider.

The description of this product on the Cocokind website reads, “This lightweight, nutrient-rich, moisturizing smoothing cream improves skin tone, texture, and firmness while providing all-day hydration, like a green juice for your skin. The cushiony formula features a blend of antioxidants, essential fatty acids, and vitamins that nourishes skin. In doing so, it also helps minimize the appearance of large pores, controls shine, and leaves skin with a smooth, satin finish.”
The ingredients include celery superseed complex (“fatty acid-packed flax and antioxidant-rich celery extracts work to support skin’s structure, which in turn improves the appearance of pores”), squalane (“a natural moisturizer in skin, provides the lightweight hydration in the texture smoothing cream and helps lock in moisture”), and tsubaki seed oil (“a source of antioxidants and fatty acids, helps smooth the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and support the skin barrier”).
This is a light day cream with a pretty strong natural celery scent.
It has worked well for me under makeup and seems to be especially well-suited for use during the summer months, when I do not need as much hydration and when the celery smell feels a little refreshing.
I don’t feel that it has irritated my skin at all.

The description of this product on the Goop website reads, “This luxuriously rich all-in-one supercream significantly improves firmness, elasticity, glow, the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and brightness after just four weeks. Its unique whipped texture melts into skin; a single application leaves skin deeply nourished, firmer-looking, and moisturized for 48 hours. The clinically tested formula is made with a megadose of plant-based ceramides, squalane, and seven highly active botanicals—including Schisandra fruit, illipe butter, and caviar lime—that work synergistically to leave skin ultramoisturized, soft, supple, smooth, firm, and even-toned.”
I’ve had good experiences with this cream. It feels good on my skin, works well under makeup, and has not seemed to be irritating at all.
Although there is a light natural floral-type scent, it is hardly noticeable and seems fine to me.
It would be a little hard for me to justify buying this product on a regular basis since there are others that are much less expensive that I feel work well for me.
It does seem to be a good product though.

The description of this product on the Honest website reads, “A lightweight, radiance-boosting moisturizer infused with Vitamin C + Niacinamide known to help improve the appearance of skin tone. Infused with Vitamin C, Niacinamide (the powerhouse ingredient known to improve appearance of skin tone), and Pearl, this lightweight moisturizer instantly boosts radiance and quenches skin for up to 24 hours of moisture. Works for all skin types.”
I like this product and feel that my skin has done well with it.
Because I have come to think that Vitamin C serums that are too strong can be slightly irritating to my skin, I am rather appreciative of the fact that this product contains an apparently lower level of Vitamin C along with some good hydrators (including niacinamide, squalane, sodium hyaluronate, and sodium acetylated hyaluronate).
It is possible that I also have done well with it because it includes Saccharomyces Ferment Filtrate, which to my understanding means that it has some good bacteria in it.
The only ingredient that EWG lists as being potentially problematic is malic acid, which is included as an exfoliator.
Especially since it provides the Vitamin C benefits, I would consider buying it again.

The description of this product on the Honest website states, “Hydration doesn’t have to be heavy. This award-winning, bestselling, lightweight, moisture-release water cream refreshes and cools on application as it leaves a dewy finish. Infused with Jojoba + Squalane to help hydrate and soothe thirst, while 2 sizes of Hyaluronic Acid help soften and firm skin (reducing the appearance of fine lines).”
This affordably priced product from Honest is rich in hydrators, including squalane as the first ingredient (after water) and two different forms of sodium hyaluronate further down the list.
The product also includes moisturizers derived from coconut and jojoba oils and glycerin, as well as a fair amount of apple fruit acid (which I suppose must be serving as a mild exfoliator).
I am especially impressed by the fact that this product includes no ingredients at all that EWG believes to be of concern.
I personally have found the cream to feel quite clean to me and to work very well with my skin without causing any irritation.
Due to the use of all the squalane and sodium hyaluronate, this product gives my skin more of a tacky-type feeling than almost any other cream that I have tried. While I wasn’t sure how I felt about that at first, after I realized how helpful that was in terms of working well with my makeup, I started to feel quite happy about it.
I have used this cream often and always have had good experiences with it.
The fact that it performs so well while simultaneously being among the cleanest and most affordable creams that I have found is really remarkable to me.
I have purchased several jars so far (for myself and to give to others) and am sure I will continue to buy more in the future.

The description of this product on the Mineral Fusion website reads, “Deeply restorative Evening Primrose Oil, rich in omega fatty acids, restores moisture while a wrinkle-fighting peptide and naturally exfoliating Glycolic Acid help bring renewed skin to the surface.”
While this product is stated as being designed for nighttime use, I have found that it works well for me during the day as well.
I have not found it to be heavy or greasy at all.
For those who like using silicones, the small amount of dimethicone in the formula may help it to serve as a good base for makeup.
The formula includes some glycolic acid as a chemical exfoliator, but I have not found the product to be irritating to my face at all.
Unlike the Mineral Fusion moisturizer that is stated as being intended for day use, this one includes no fragrance ingredients.
The fact that many of the ingredients are organic is an additional plus.

In the first layer, you’re getting olive-based squalane and jojoba oil for instant nourishment. This first layer gives skin a sip of what’s to come and makes way for our trusty HA to work its magic. The second layer is pure replenishment as hyaluronic acid uses every bit of its power to absorb as much moisture from your environment as possible. So, if you live in Miami or any other unbelievably humid region, this is your skin’s ultimate BFF. The last layer is apricot oil, which locks in all of these levels of moisture for lasting hydration. Tatcha The Indigo Cream – $88
Living Clean Rating: 8 out of 10
Performance Rating:

Ingredients Rating:
(4 / 5)
Lisa Irritation Level: None
Silicone Level: High
Container Type: Plastic
The description of this product on the Tatcha website states, “This multi-tasking, fragrance-free moisturizer delivers therapeutic natural ingredients to provide relief and long-lasting hydration for sensitive skin. Awarded the National Eczema Association Seal of Acceptance. Velvety-rich cream advanced with an ultra comfortable, cushiony texture helps relieve the skin, leaving it visibly softer, smoother and firmer. Natural Japanese Indigo extract calms and soothes skin, now included at a higher concentration for increased efficacy. Colloidal Oatmeal, a FDA-designated skin protectant, helps relieve minor skin irritation and itching caused by eczema and rashes. Hadasei-3, a trinity of anti-aging Japanese superfoods, restores a healthy-looking, youthful radiance. Ideal for all skin types. Formulated specially for sensitive skin showing signs of eczema, dermatitis, rosacea or allergies.”
Although many Tatcha products are not especially suited to sensitive skin, this one is formulated with the goal of decreasing irritation as well as not causing it.
I obtained a small sample jar of the product and have used it sporadically as a day cream, prior to putting on makeup.
I feel that my skin has done okay with it, though I haven’t really observed it helping with irritated skin more than other products that I usually use.
The product is an unusual denim-blue color, which apparently is from natural ingredients since I do not see any artificial colorants mentioned on the ingredients list.
An unusual ingredient cited by EWG as potentially problematic is tetrasodium tetracarboxymethyl naringeninchalcone, which seems to be included specifically because it is thought to have the ability to decrease skin redness.
The product also contains quite a bit of silicone, which is something that I would prefer not to have on my skin on a regular basis.
The dimethicone in the product does help it to function similarly to a primer when I put it on before applying makeup, and so that is at least some benefit.

The description of this product on The Outset website states, “The essential third step to nourish the skin. This lightweight, clinically proven moisturizer provides immediate and long-lasting, 24-hour hydration to soothe and protect the skin from pollution and free radicals that contribute to aging. Quench: Immediately softens and replenishes moisture to dry, dehydrated skin. This nourishing formula, featuring squalane, avocado and plum oils, deeply moisturizes the skin without clogging pores. Calm: Hops extract helps to soothe and condition the skin, leaving it feeling smoother and more supple. Boost Resilience: Edelweiss and red rice extracts help nourish and protect skin from dryness, pollution, and free radicals that contribute to aging.”
The Outset was created with the idea that when skin becomes messed-up as a result of having been exposed to problematic beauty products (or for other reasons), their products can help it to recover quickly.
I have found their products – including this moisturizing cream – to accomplish this goal really well and mostly use this moisturizer when my skin is feeling a little irritated.
I have not found this product to be irritating to my skin at all, and I do think that it helps my skin to recover from other irritations better than anything else that I have tried.
It also disappears quickly into my skin and creates a tacky type feeling that works well under makeup.
The product smells totally neutral to me, without any essential oils or other obvious scented ingredients.
It is a little surprising how gentle this moisturizer is considering the several problematic ingredients (including potassium hydroxide, sodium benzoate, sodium glycolate, and sodium hydroxide) that are listed. Maybe the amounts of those used are very small.
The product also includes coconut oil, which can be irritating for some people.
However, I have personally found this product to be terrific, to the point that if I were going to use just one day moisturizer all the time, this is the one that I would choose.
I’ve used up most of a full-size bottle so far and am sure that I will be buying it again.

The description of this product reads, “A minimalist, fragrance-free moisturizer with a lightweight, non-greasy texture. Dermatologically tested and suitable for sensitive skin. 99% naturally-derived. Developed using only the most essential ingredients, all unnecessary additives have been left out of this formula. The end result? A lightweight hydrating cream comprised of just nine potent ingredients. This cream is suitable for normal to combination skin, including sensitive skin. We do not recommend it for use on oily skin.”
Following are the nine ingredients in this product: 1) water, 2) coconut oil, 3) glycerin, 4) cetyl alcohol (a waxy moisturizer derived from vegetable oils), 5) pentylene glycol (a synthetic humectant), 6) cetyl phosphate (an emulsifier and surfactant), 7) lye, 8) sodium hyaluronate (a hydrator), and 9) o-cymen-5-Ol (a preservative).
This therefore is a coconut-based moisturizer, with the other ingredients mostly seeming to have been added to help the product to feel less greasy on the skin.
This is a fairly lightweight product considering that coconut oil is the second ingredient, and I have found it to work reasonably well under makeup.
The ingredient list is quite clean and I have not found it to irritate my skin.
On the other hand, I have not found it to be especially helpful to my skin and therefore doubt that I will purchase it again.

The description of this product reads, “Tasked with reducing the appearance of fine lines caused by dehydration, this cream is formulated with hydrating hyaluronic acid. We also include nourishing squalane and shea butter to make the skin more soft and supple. An active-rich moisturizer to restore suppleness and comfort to dry, tight skin. 98% naturally-derived. This cream is suitable for all skin types, especially for dry, normal, and combination skin.”
This product contains plum oil as the second ingredient, along with several other moisturizers and hydrators that usually seem to be pretty good for my skin.
It is runnier than I had anticipated, with a texture that is more like a lotion than a cream.
I have found that it feels wet on my skin for a few minutes after I put it on, but then dries down to a surface that works well under makeup.
The product definitely feels clean to me, and I have not experienced any irritation from using it.
Although I don’t mind using this product, I doubt that I will buy it again for use on my face since I have found other products that I like better.
It is rather expensive for use as a hand cream, but I still might consider purchasing it for that purpose.

Trash Can
Mad Hippie Face Cream ($26): I found this product to be quite irritating to my skin, and a friend with mold illness and chemical sensitivities reported the same thing. In addition, I found more than a dozen reviews online from people who had experienced a similar issue. This was surprising since I have done well with other Mad Hippie products and since the ingredients list looks pretty good. EWG gives the product a 2 (green), flagging as problematic only the lime extract (4) and aloe vera (3).
Vanicream Daily Facial Moisturizer ($13): Although this product is rated as clean (with no problematic ingredients) by EWG, it caused my face to experience significant burning and itching. While others may have better experiences with it, I don’t feel that I can suggest that other people consider buying a product that made my face react in this way.

Although the skincare and makeup sections have a particular focus on products appropriate for women who are in their 40’s or beyond, the information provided may be useful for other people as well.
The products are curated by Lisa Petrison, who has been focused on helping people to improve their health by avoiding toxicity since 2008 and who heads the Paradigm Change organization.
Her Living Clean in a Dirty World blog site discusses a variety of topics of relevance to those who are working to pursue a more natural lifestyle with less exposure to harmful toxicity.

A Note From Lisa
Products that I have tried or researched and that I have not found to be acceptable from a toxicity standpoint have been omitted entirely from the discussions on this website.
However, since a goal of this project is to introduce people to a range of options in terms of price and functionality, some products discussed on this site include ingredients that may not be appropriate for everyone.
It’s my hope that all individuals making their way to this site will find at least a few options from each product category that meet all of their own needs and wants from a variety of perspectives.
The vast majority of cosmetics marketers now offer affiliate programs in which Internet content creators may earn commissions if people who are referred to the companies’ sites by clicking on links end up making purchases.
