By Lisa Petrison
Although I used liquid cream concealers when I was younger, most of the ones that I have tried recently do not seem to have worked as well for me as the concealer sticks and other solid cream concealers that I use regularly now.
Most liquid concealers seem to me basically like thicker versions of liquid foundation and to be especially problematic in terms of emphasizing wrinkles and other textural issues that I may have.
I feel that the cream concealers that I have liked allow me to address problem spots with more opaque coverage targeted in a pinpoint way, without the need for me to add any additional overall foundation coverage.
Most liquid concealers seem to me to be designed to provide sheerer coverage of larger areas and to be used in conjunction with foundation, on the other hand.
I do feel, though, that I have found many liquid concealers that have performed quite well in terms of not irritating my eyes or causing other kinds of toxicity-related problems, and that a few of them have worked well for me in general.
A few of them also have worked well for me as Eyelid Primers.
Because people have varying needs with regard to concealers, the Living Clean Superstars section does not exclude those concealers that have been problematic for me in terms of emphasizing the wrinkles in my eye area, if it seems that they would be especially helpful for those who have other issues such as breakouts or hyperpigmentation.

The description of this product reads, “A skin-smoothing concealer made with 90% naturally derived ingredients that visibly brightens dark circles and reduces the look of fine lines. Provides medium buildable coverage. Delivers crease-resistant, all-day wear with a luminous finish. Has a lightweight, creamy feel.”
Although the description states that this product reduces the look of fine lines, I found it to be unusually problematic in terms of making all texture issues on my skin – including fine wrinkles as well as pores – look worse.
In addition, the product contains quite a bit of shimmer (apparently from the mica mentioned in the ingredients list) that draws attention to all the areas that I am trying to conceal.
While I am not opposed at all to having a bit of shimmer on my face, I think it should be in the areas that I want to highlight (such as on my cheekbones or above my mouth) rather than on my problem areas.
While I wouldn’t exactly say that this product irritated my face, it didn’t feel as good on it as most of the other concealers that I tried.
On the plus side, even though the ingredients list mentions a floral extract, I am not picking up on any scent here.
The coverage level of the product is moderate. It dries down a little but still feels dewy on the skin.
The product is available in 17 shades. I tried Light 2N (“for very light neutral skin with peach undertones”) and felt that the shade worked okay for me.

The description of this product on the Fitglow website reads, “A skin treatment, full coverage concealer that goes beyond just camouflaging problematic skin by working in harmony with your skin to improve its look and condition. The plant-powered blend of Phyto Elastin, Organic Green Tea, Vitamin K, and Licorice Root diminishes the look of blemishes, pigmentation, and fine lines, leaving skin stronger and smoother. The creamy texture blends flawlessly into the skin to provide a potent cover up to areas that need more coverage.”
This rather heavy concealer seems intended for those with significant skin issues that they are trying to cover up as well as to remedy.
I thought that the concealer felt good on my skin and that it was not irritating at all.
However, I found that the product settled into my wrinkles and exaggerated them, which is the opposite of what I need to have happening on my face.
In addition, because of the skincare ingredients, the concealer remained oily enough that it did not work for me as a base for eyeshadow.
I think that for people who have significant issues that they need to camouflage with a heavier concealer, this could be a good choice, though.
The product is available in 18 shades. I have the shade C2.7 (“golden light medium”), which is a little darker than would be ideal for me.

Processed Fragrance: Lavender Oil

The description of this product reads, “HAN Skincare Cosmetics Liquid Concealer is a creamy and nourishing concealer that works to improve uneven skin tone, conceal dark circles, and reduce the appearance of redness while benefiting the skin using argan oil, shea butter, green tea and Vitamin E. Offering a lightweight and buildable medium to full coverage, our long-wearing, non-toxic formula is made with natural and organic ingredients to refresh and perfect your complexion.”
I’ve had a good bit of success with almost all the products by HAN that I have tried, and this oil-based concealer is included among those.
The product seems to disappear into my skin unusually well, without looking cakey or emphasizing my wrinkles.
The formula includes a number of natural moisturizers and feels good on my skin.
It includes a little bit of dimethicone (as the fifth ingredient), and I suspect that that is one of the reasons that it does not emphasize the lines or other texture on my skin.
It doesn’t feel like there is so much silicone that my skin is unable to sweat freely, however.
The product dries down reasonably well, but I still don’t think that I would use this as an eyeshadow base except in the case of an “emergency.”
The product has a mild natural lavender scent that I do not find to be objectionable.
Seven shades are offered. I have Fair Light (“fair to light skin with neutral or yellow undertones”) and think that it is a good match for me.

Honest Fresh Flex Concealer – $22

Overall Rating:

Silicone Level: Moderate
The description for this product reads, “With medium buildable coverage where you want it the most, this lightweight, flexible concealer was made to seamlessly blend into skin with skin-loving benefits. Whether you’re heading to the office or the great outdoors, our adaptable formula keeps up with your flex. Achieve everything from quick spot conceal to all-over coverage with our 16-shade range that complements any undertone. This concealer does more than just coverage; we specially designed the multitasking formula to care for what’s underneath—formulated with our Clean Power Technology to create lasting wear + packed with nourishing ingredients. Made with a dose of essential vitamins (B3 and E), two types of Hyaluronic Acid to hydrate skin, Shea Butter for optimal skin wellness, and a blend of diffusing powders, our formula effortlessly melts into skin, leaving you with an airy, comfortable, second-skin finish.”
This concealer was introduced by Honest in 2022.
The fact that this concealer is based on water rather than oils seems to make it a little less appropriate for my own dry skin than some of the other products that I have tried.
Although it goes on nicely, I feel that even when my face is very well-hydrated, this one starts to break up a bit more, making it more obvious that I am wearing makeup.
The product does include moisturizers and some hyaluronic acid, as well as a moderate amount of silicone.
It seems to work well on my nose and cheeks, but makes the wrinkles around my eyes look a little worse.
While I have not found this product to be irritating when used under my eyes or on other parts of my face, it does seem to cause a little irritation when used above my eyes.
The product also seems inappropriate for use above my eyes because it does not dry down very well and because it exacerbates the textural issues that I have there.
Since Honest’s primary target market is moms in their 20’s and 30’s, it makes some sense to me that this formula would be more appropriate for those with skin that is less dry and that has fewer wrinkles than mine.
I would think that the product might work really well for many of these younger women.
Sixteen shades are offered. I have Beige (“light skin with subtle peachy undertones”) and the color seems to be a good match for me.

Overall Rating:

Performance Rating:

The description of this product reads, “Kosas Revealer Super Creamy + Brightening Concealer and Daytime Eye Cream is a concealer that is delivered in a skincare base packed with hyaluronic acid, peptides and caffeine that hydrate, visibly plump and give a smooth, radiant finish. Covers and reduces the appearance of dark circles, but still fully looks like your skin. Clean, comfy, and clinically tested. Caffeine and pink algae extract: fights dark circles, puffiness and darkness. Hyaluronic acid and peptides: Hydrates and visibly plumps for supple, juicy skin. Arnica and panthenol: The ultimate skin-calming tool for blemishes and redness.”
This is a popular concealer that has gotten very good reviews from many beauty influencers.
The product has worked reasonably well in terms of covering my dark circles, though not as well as the cream concealers (such as the Jones Road Face Pencils) that I have come to rely on for that purpose.
It also has worked reasonably well on my face in general.
I feel like it emphasizes the textural issues on my face to some extent, but that the problem is not nearly as bad as with some products.
There is a slight natural herbal smell, but I have found it to be pleasant.
I appreciate the fact that the product contains caffeine since this seems to be helpful for me in terms of preventing bags under my eyes.
Although this product seems okay as a general concealer, I haven’t used it very much for that purpose since there are other products that I like better for that.
However, I have used this product frequently as an eyelid primer and now am keeping it with my eye makeup products to use exclusively for that purpose.
I have found that this product covers the discoloration on top of my eyes well and looks nice, and that it has not irritated my eyes at all.
The product dries down well and holds up for quite a while, and the texture serves as a nice base for either powder or cream shadow.
While I have found a few other products that also have worked for me as eyeshadow base products, most of them contain silicone (which I would prefer to avoid if possible).
I appreciate the fact that this ones does not contain any silicone and that it has worked well for me.

MAC Pro Longwear Concealer – $28
Overall Rating:
(4 / 5)
Performance Rating:
(5 / 5)
Ingredients Rating:
(3 / 5)
Lisa Irritation Level: None
Processed Fragrance: None
Silicone Level: High
The description of this product reads, “A lightweight, liquid, long-lasting concealer with a comfortable matte finish. This pro concealer gives a smoother, flawless look to skin. The full-coverage formula helps to conceal blemishes, dark spots, skin discolouration and undereye circles. Long-wearing, 24 hours. Non-setting/non-creasing, non-streaking, non- caking. Water-resistant. Sweat and humidity resistant.”
This is a silicone-based concealer that also includes a few other potentially problematic ingredients, including laureth-7 (a surfactant) as well as phenoxyethanol and chlorphenesin (preservatives).
However, I feel that this product has worked well for me, without causing any noticeable irritation.
It provides good coverage without making my wrinkles look worse.
I have tried using this under my eyes to hide dark circles, on my eyelids as a primer, and on the rest of my face as a concealer. I feel that it has worked pretty well for all of these.
The product is available in 16 shades. I have the NW25, which is described as “mid-tone beige with rosy neutral undertone for light to medium skin.”
This was the shade that a MAC makeup artist recommended to me in chat after looking at a photograph of me, suggesting that the cooler undertone would be especially effective at camouflaging my dark circles.
I think that this has been an accurate assessment and that this product has worked pretty well for me both under my eyes and as an eyelid primer.
The MAC numbering system is so counterintuitive that I would suggest consulting with a company makeup artist (either online or in a store) when choosing a MAC foundation or concealer shade for this purpose or any other purpose.
I would be somewhat discinlined to use this product every day because it is silicone-based and therefore does not allow my skin to “breathe” very well, and I have stopped using it very often now that I have found some other products without silicone that do as good or better job.
I do think that it’s been a good product for me though.

This product provides pretty good coverage and has not irritated my skin.
However, I have found that it emphasizes the texture on my skin quite a lot and makes my wrinkles look worse.
It is a water-based formula and does not seem to get along that well with my skin. Maybe it would work better on someone younger.
The product also has a pretty strong natural herbal smell that I have found to be a little odd in a concealer product.
I tried Shade 30 (“fair with peachy, pink undertones; peach shade works well to cover bluish undereye discoloration”).
I feel that the shade is not too bad with regard to covering my dark circles and that the issue for me with this product has been with the formula rather than the color.

Overall Rating:

Performance Rating:
(4 / 5)
Ingredients Rating:
(5 / 5)
Lisa Irritation Level: None

The description of this product on the Saie website reads, “Meet the skin-enhancing, face-filtering concealer from the future. Packed with clinically-tested, powerhouse ingredients like Squalane, Glycerin, Cucumber, and Tomato extract, Hydrabeam is your ultra-hydrating sheer concealer that covers just enough and illuminates a lot. Our unique formula has a lightweight, whipped-gel texture that blurs, brightens, and creates a fresh and glowing finish under eyes and anywhere else you please.”
This concealer offers moisturizing benefits, along with a minimal amount of foundation coverage and a slight shimmer from the mica in it.
It feels very good on my skin and is not irritating at all.
It’s my observation that (especially considering how little coverage the product offers) this concealer has a bit of a tendency to emphasize textural issues on my face and to make my wrinkles look worse.
Although it is labeled as a “sheer brightening under eye concealer,” using it in my eye area does not work for me at all. It is not pigmented enough to cover my dark circles; makes the crinkles around my eyes look worse; does not dry down enough for it to serve as a good eyeshadow base; and draws unwanted attention to the area as a result of the shimmery mica.
It works somewhat better to cover the redness that I sometimes get on my cheeks. For that usage, the slightly shimmery look is actually appealing since it looks like I am wearing a very low-key highlighter or just have a natural glow.
Saie seems to be a brand that is targeted at very young women, with all the pictures of this product on the company website appearing to be consistent with that.
I think that perhaps for someone who has generally very good skin with no textural issues, this product could serve as a nice “spot foundation” to blur and lighten slightly problematic areas just a little bit.
I think that it seems less appropriate for the more problematic issues that I suspect that most people are using a concealer to address.
While I would not use this product as a concealer, I do think that it has worked really well for me as an eyeshadow base.
It is gentle enough for me to use on my eyelids and provides a nice surface that seems to get along well with my powder as well as my cream eyeshadows.
I feel like the slight shimmer of the product is a positive rather than a negative when I use it above my eyes, and that it does not exaggerate textural issues to any significant extent when used that way.
I thus am giving it 5 Stars for performance on the Eyelid Primers page, but just 4 Stars on this page.
Nine shades of the product are available. I have Shade 2 (“for light to medium skin tones with golden undertones”) and the color seems fine for me.

The description of this product reads, “This concealer offers comfy-yet-powerful full coverage with a natural matte finish and hydroflex technology that moves with skin, so it won’t cake or crease. It blurs and brightens dark under-eye circles and feels like an eye cream with up to 24-hour hydration. It is waterproof, crease-proof, sweatproof, and dermatologist tested.”
This concealer contains a number of different silicone ingredients, which I would prefer not to have to use on my skin.
Unfortunately, in this concealer the silicone doesn’t seem to be adding that much to the performance since the product still seems to have a tendency to emphasize my wrinkles and other textural issues.
Some of the user reviews also complain about the concealer oxidizing on the skin, though I didn’t really notice that happening.
On the positive side, I do not feel that the product irritated my skin at all.
In addition, it dries down totally and has worked pretty well for me as a base for eyeshadow.
All 32 shades of the product are available in both full-size ($28) and mini ($12) versions. I appreciated the chance to try it for a more reasonable price.
I have the color Light Sand (“fair to light skin with warm, golden undertones”), which is on the yellow side compared to most foundation/concealer products that I have tried.

The description of this concealer states, “Medium high coverage. Natural finish. Reduces dark circles and puffiness all at once. Enriched with caffeine, niacinamide and cornflower hydrolate to reduce the appearance of dark circles and puffiness, long term. Also suitable for correcting imperfections. 97% naturally-derived formula.”
This is a French brand of skincare products that just started offering a few tinted products in 2022.
There is now a U.S. website that accepts orders, with the products (at least so far) being shipped to consumers from France.
I feel that both the foundation and the concealer have worked really well for me.
The Typology concealer seems to contain more oil than most other liquid concealers and to blend into my skin well even if I am not wearing any other foundation products.
I feel that it offers substantial coverage without drawing attention to my wrinkles or making it obvious that I am wearing any makeup at all.
The product seems to me to be moisturizing and nourishing, but it does not give my skin a shiny appearance or sticky feeling.
I like the idea that it includes caffeine and other ingredients thought to reduce puffiness and dark circles, though I haven’t experimented with it enough on its own to make a conclusion as to how much it has actually helped.
I think that the product works well in a variety of ways, including under my eyes and for general camouflaging of redness or other problem spots.
It also works almost as well (or maybe just as well) as the Kosas Revealer Concealer as an eyeshadow base.
The tube contains a generous amount of product and thus seems to me a pretty good value for the price.
The product is available in six shades. I have Shade 2 (“light skin with pink, neutral or yellow undertones”) and feel that it has been a good color for me.

The description of this product reads, “A full-coverage liquid under eye concealer that seamlessly covers blemishes, corrects dark spots, and promotes long-term skin health. Buildable full coverage concealer to correct and conceal. Ultra-light, creamy texture blends with ease. Hydrate and rejuvenates skin. Enriched with plant-based ingredients like pomegranate, olive and sunflower seed oil. Available in 20 shades.”
This product comes in a small tube and does not really dry down after application, meaning that it is not very appropriate for use as an eyeshadow base.
Especially considering that it does not contain any silicone, it seems to do a reasonably good job of camouflaging dark circles and imperfections without drawing a lot of extra attention to my wrinkles.
It contains a little bit of shimmer from the mica in it, which means that I have needed to put foundation or powder on top of it to make it work for me.
The concealer feels good on my skin and has not been irritating at all.
Although there are some floral ingredients listed, I am not noticing that it has any kind of scent.
I have the shade 3N (“fair with neutral peach undertone”), which is a good winter shade for me but slightly light for the summer months.

The description of this product reads, “Creamy concealer designed to brighten skin while making blemishes and dark circles disappear creating a flawless complexion that looks and feels natural.”
I picked this up on a trip to Natural Grocers and did not find it that it worked very well for me.
It did not provide very good coverage and looked patchy on my skin.
In addition, it made my wrinkles look much worse.
It did feel gentle and did not irritate my skin at all, however.
I have the shade C3 (“porcelain to fair/cool undertones”), and it is too light for me even in terms of camouflaging my undereye issues.

About This Website
The Living Clean in a Dirty World shopping website is designed to provide guidance to those seeking out products that are relatively low in toxicity and that provide generally positive user experiences.
Although the skincare and makeup sections have a particular focus on products appropriate for women who are in their 40’s or beyond, the information provided may be useful for other people as well.
The products are curated by Lisa Petrison, who has been focused on helping people to improve their health by avoiding toxicity since 2008 and who heads the Paradigm Change organization.
Her Living Clean in a Dirty World blog site discusses a variety of topics of relevance to those who are working to pursue a more natural lifestyle with less exposure to harmful toxicity.
Lisa is the author of several books, including A Beginner’s Guide to Mold Avoidance (co-written with Erik Johnson).
She also runs the Paradigm Change website (focusing on issues related to toxic mold illness) and the Mold Avoiders Facebook group (designed for the discussion of all topics of interest to those pursuing the mold avoidance approach described in the “Beginner’s Guide” book).
Lisa was born in August 1964 and has yet to try cosmetic surgery, Botox or other cosmetic treatments requiring interactions with a physician, or beauty products containing retinoids.

She holds a Ph.D. in marketing and social psychology from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University as well as B.S./M.S. degrees from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern.

She also would like to thank the many members of the Mold Avoiders community who have shared suggestions of products to be included here.
A Note From Lisa
Products that I have tried or researched and that I have not found to be acceptable from a toxicity standpoint have been omitted entirely from the discussions on this website.
However, since a goal of this project is to introduce people to a range of options in terms of price and functionality, some products discussed on this site include ingredients that may not be appropriate for everyone.
It’s my hope that all individuals making their way to this site will find at least a few options from each product category that meet all of their own needs and wants from a variety of perspectives.
The vast majority of cosmetics marketers now offer affiliate programs in which Internet content creators may earn commissions if people who are referred to the companies’ sites by clicking on links end up making purchases.
I participate in quite a few individual affiliate programs as well as in the Sovrn/Viglinks program (which automatically converts regular links into revenue-generating links).
