Cream and gel cleansers that include processed fragrances as well as oil-based cleansers, micellar cleansers, cleansers containing exfoliants, and other types of cleansing products are discussed on additional pages of this website.

Aveda Botanical Kinetics All-Sensitive Cleanser – $38
♣ Living Clean Superstar
Living Clean Rating: 9 out of 10
Performance Rating: (5 / 5)
Ingredients Rating: (4 / 5)
Lisa Irritation Level: None
Noteworthy Ingredients: Baobob Seed Oil, Sunflower Seed Oil, Arginine, Salicylic Acid, Sodium Hyaluronate
This description of this product on the Aveda website reads, “98% naturally-derived, aroma-free gentle cleanser for sensitive skin that removes makeup, impurities and environmental pollutants. Olive and coconut oil-derived cleansers gently help remove makeup, impurities and environmental pollutants. Certified organic baobab oil helps maintain the moisture barrier.”
I have found this product to be a rather thick and rich cream cleanser that has worked well for my dry skin.
Unlike most Aveda skincare products, this does not have any added fragrance. I personally think it smells fine.
It does contain phenoxyethanol, which is a preservative that I seem to be able to tolerate but that some people cannot use.
My skin seems to have done well with it, even when I am using it as a cleanser every day for a week or more.
I do not need to use very much of this product at all to cleanse my face and the container that I bought has lasted for a long time.
I suspect that I eventually will buy this again, probably during one of Aveda’s sitewide sales since it is on the expensive side.

Living Clean Rating: 9 out of 10
Performance Rating: (5 / 5)

Noteworthy Ingredients: Coconut Oil, Coconut Fruit Juice, Prickly Pear Extract
The description of this product on the Bare Minerals website reads, “A nourishing vegan cleanser that feels soothing on sensitive skin, and removes makeup and impurities without drying. Made with just 15 ingredients, it improves the look of sensitive skin over time.”
Although the product includes some ingredients that seem to be questionable, EWG suggests that cocamidopropyl betaine (a surfactant) is not an issue when used in products that will be immediately rinsed off the eyes and that glyceryl polyacrylate is more of an issue when eye contact occurs.
Phenoxyethanol is a commonly used preservative that some people do not tolerate.
I personally felt that this product was okay for me and worked my way through most of a full-size container.
Although I didn’t have any problems with it, I doubt that I would buy it again since I have found what seem to me to be better options for my skin.

The description of this product on the Beautycounter website reads, “This creamy foaming cleanser features squalane, plum oil, and phytic acid to remove face and eye makeup, wash away impurities, and get you glowing. Leaves skin feeling soft and smooth, not tight or dry.”
I feel that this product has done a little better for me in terms of removing makeup than some cream cleansers and that it seems to have been fine on my skin.
It does contain phenoxyethanol (a preservative that some people cannot tolerate but that I seem to be okay using).
I did not notice any potentially problematic smell with this product.
I would consider buying this product agaain.

Living Clean Rating: 9 out of 10
Performance Rating: (5 / 5)

Noteworthy Ingredients: Coconut Oil, Witch Hazel Water, Sunflower Seed Oil, Phytic Acid
The description of this product on the Beautycounter website reads, “This gentle daily cleanser removes makeup and impurities without stripping away moisture. The formula, made with a blend of coconut oil and aloe vera, leaves skin feeling nourished and soothed and is perfect for sensitive skin.”
I think that this is a nice basic cleanser that my skin seems to like and that is reasonably priced.
It does not contain any fragrance ingredients, and the only ingredients that seem to have the potential of being problematic for many people are phenoxyethanol (a preservative that some people cannot tolerate) and coconut.
The $7 shipping charge does add to the price of the product, and so this would be a good product to order from Beautycounter when purchasing other items or during a “free shipping” sale.
I suspect that eventually I will buy this product again.

Beekman 1802 Milk Wash Exfoliating Jelly Cleanser – $38
Living Clean Rating: 8 out of 10
Performance Rating: (4 / 5)
Ingredients Rating: (4 / 5)
Lisa Irritation Level: Very Mild
Noteworthy Ingredients: Lactic Acid, Glycolic Acid, Salicylic Acid, Tartaric Acid, Malic Acid, Goat Milk, Colostrum, Bifida Ferment Lysate, Lactose, Milk Protein, Bilberry Fruit Extract, Honey, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Whey Protein.
The description of this product on the Beekman 1802 website reads, “Our AHA- and BHA-powered Milk Wash instantly transforms from a light jelly formula into a deep-cleansing milk to dissolve makeup, deeply purify, and exfoliate without abrasive scrubs. This multi-action cleanser helps draw out oil-based debris and is kind to your skin, leaving it feeling silky soft and moisturized, rather than dry and tight. Benefits: Removes makeup including water-resistant formulas. Deep cleanses and exfoliates for clearer, brighter skin. Helps control oily skin, clears pores, and resurfaces. This cleanser includes alpha hydroxy acids (AHA) and beta hydroxy acids (BHA), both of which are designed to exfoliate the skin.”
Although this product does not seem to be designed for people with dry skin, I obtained a small sample size bottle of the product and tried it out a few times.
I didn’t seem to have any problems with it irritating my skin.
However, it felt a little too drying to be ideal for my own very dry skin. I guess that was due to the salicylic acid.
The product has a slight scent from the variety of botanical ingredients used, but I did not find it to be unpleasant.
While I don’t think this is likely going to be an ideal choice for those with dry or aging skin, it does seem like a fairly clean product that may be okay for other people.

Although EWG lists a few potentially problematic ingredients, this product seems to have been fine for me even when I used it on a regular basis.
No added fragrances are used and the product smells okay to me.
I worked my way through a whole container and would use it again in the future if that was what was readily available to me.

Bybi Milk Melt – $17
Living Clean Rating: 7 out of 10
Performance Rating: (3 / 5)
Ingredients Rating: (4 / 5)
Lisa Irritation Level: Very Mild
Noteworthy Ingredients: Aloe Vera Juice, Lactic Acid, Coconut Fruit Extract, Xylitol, Lactobacillus Ferment, Oat Kernel Extract
The description of this product reads, “Milk Melt is a dreamy, creamy oat milk cleanser that clarifies and soothes even the most sensitive and irritated skin. A calming oat milk base gently cleanses without stripping, whilst oat kernel extract effectively lifts traces of dirt, oil, and sunscreen. Probiotic coconut yogurt re-balances the skin’s microbiome, helping to boost skin health, prevent breakouts and soothe redness. Feel fresh-faced (and not tight-faced!) with this gentle alternative to harsh cleansers.”
Although this product did not cause my skin to become red or to itch, it also did not seem to be very good for my skin.
After the first try, I really did not feel like using it again and only was able to bring myself to put it on my face a couple more times before giving up on it.
The inclusion of the benzyl alcohol could be an issue for me.
In addition, I wonder about the oat-based ingredients since non-organic oats tend to be very contaminated with glyphosate.
Roundup and other brands of glyphosate have a strongly negative effect on the microbiome, killing off good bacteria and allowing toxin-producing fungi to thrive.
In any case, although I like Bybi’s strawberry seed oil, I don’t see myself buying this cleanser again.

Evanhealy Cleansing Milk – $37
♣ Living Clean Superstar
Living Clean Rating: 10 out of 10

Ingredients Rating: (5 / 5)
Lisa Irritation Level: None
Noteworthy Ingredients: Rose Geranium Hydrosol, Kaolin, Aloe Vera, Coconut Oil, Shea Butter, Sunflower Seed Oil, Yucca Schidigera Root Extract, Olive Oil
The Evanhealy website states about the Simply Basic version of this product, “Ideal for the most sensitive, reactive and easily irritated skin. Simply Basic Cleansing Milk pairs the creaminess of a plant milk with the lightly lathering action of natural yucca root creating a nourishing, effective and deep cleansing product. This skin-balancing formula effectively draws impurities leaving skin exquisitely clean. Daily use softens and loosens the hardened waxy deposits that are blackheads. Adding plant oils and floral waters to the skin restores vitality, balances hydration and refines the appearance of pores, resulting in skin that is soft and supple. Our creamy cleansing milk, handmade with refreshing aloe vera, nourishing plant oils, antioxidant-rich gotu kola, and purifying white kaolin clay leaves skin feeling clean, supple and perfectly refreshed. Essential oil free, to support and cleanse even the most troubled and sensitive skin.”
The product is also available in Rose Cleansing Milk (with rose geranium and lavender oils), Blue Lavender Cleansing Milk (with lavender and blue chamomile oils), and Patchouli Rose (with rose geranium, lavender and patchouli oils) versions.
I’ve tried all of these except for the Patchouli Rose version.
While I’m not sure that any of them have exactly been a problem for my skin, the only one that I might buy again is the Simply Basic.
The scents of the rose geranium and blue chamomile oils are not very appealing to me, and I also do not think they are very good for my skin.
The Simply Basic version does seem like a gentle cleanser that I feel okay about using.
However, I don’t think that it does as good of a job removing makeup as some of the other products on this page, meaning that I might have to use a pre-cleanser more often if I were using it.

First Aid Beauty Face Cleanser – $24
Living Clean Rating: 7 out of 10
Performance Rating: (3 / 5)
Ingredients Rating: (4 / 5)
Lisa Irritation Level: Very Mild
Noteworthy Ingredients: Green Tea Leaf Extract, Licorice Root Extract, Aloe Vera Juice, Ascorbyl Palmitate (Vitamin C), Sodium PCA, Leuconostoc/Radish Root Ferment Filtrate.
The desciption of this product on the First Aid Beauty website reads, “A fragrance-free, gentle cleanser that effectively removes makeup, dirt and grime, leaving skin soft and supple. The whipped texture transforms into a sumptuous cream when blended with water. Infused with a powerful Botanical Antioxidant blend, it helps safeguard skin against environmental aggressors while also calming irritated skin. This non-stripping, pH-balanced formula works to maintain skin’s natural acidity and helps reduce flare ups, never leaving skin feeling tight or dry. Dermatologist Tested, Gluten-Free, Nut-Free, Soy-Free, Suitable for Sensitive Skin, Vegan, Nano-Free. Free from Drying Alcohols, Artificial Colorants, Artificial Fragrance, Lanolin, Mineral Oil, Parabens, Petrolatum, Phthalates, Propylene Glycol, Sulfates, Talc, Formaldehydes, Oxybenzone, Coal Tar, Hydroquinone, Triclocarbon, Ethanol.”
Although this product is stated by the company as being appropriate for those with dry skin, I felt like it was much more drying to my skin than any other cleanser I have used in recent years.
I also felt that it was a little irritating to my eyes and therefore would be disinclined to use it to take off eye makeup.
Apart from that, I don’t feel that it was noticeably irritating to my skin and so think that it conceivably could be an okay cleanser for those who have skin that is not as dry as mine.
The ingredient list looks reasonably clean and many people with sensitive skin seem to report good experiences with it.
After a couple of tries, I decided not to put it on my own skin any more, though.

Lisa Irritation Level: None
Noteworthy Ingredients: Sunflower Oil, Bamboo Ferment Filtrate, Lactobacillus/Yerba Santa Ferment, Cucumber Fruit/Flower/Leaf/Stem Extract, Leuconostoc/Aloe Barbadensis Leaf/Sorbus Aucuparia Fruit Ferment Filtrate.
This product has a strong, sweet scent that initially took me aback since it is about at the same level as that of many synthetically fragranced products.
However, I quickly decided that I liked the scent, which is stated as being from natural ingredients and has a fruity/flowery type smell that was unfamiliar to me.
Apparently the main fragrance ingredient is Leuconostoc/Aloe Barbadensis Leaf/Sorbus Aucuparia Fruit Ferment Filtrate. Sorbus Aucuparia (also called Rowan or Mountain Ash) is a small edible red berry with a sweet smell.
No essential oils or other highly processed ingredients are listed as being included.
I feel that my skin has done quite well with this product, which I attribute to the simple all-natural ingredient list and the presence of the fermented component.
It seems to be pretty good at removing my makeup and my face feels good afterwards.
I have really enjoyed using it and already have purchased an additional bottle of the product to use when I finish the first one.

Honest Calm On Foaming Cream Cleanser – $18
Living Clean Rating: 9 out of 10
Performance Rating: (4 / 5)
Ingredients Rating: (5 / 5)
Lisa Irritation Level: None
Noteworthy Ingredients: Hydrolyzed Sodium Hyaluronate, Arginine
According to the Honest website, “This foaming face cleanser gently cleanses and rinses away impurities without stripping your skin’s moisture or leaving a residue. Made with Amino Acids + Micro Hyaluronic Acid, this cleanser supports your skin’s moisture barrier, leaving skin feeling hydrated. Designed with sensitive skin in mind, we added our Calming Phyto-Blend to sooth and calm sensitive skin.”
I did not have any problems with this product irritating my skin and felt okay about using it.
The ingredient list looks good to me.
I do feel that this skin was not especially suited to my own dry skin and think that it probably would work better for those with more normal or oily skin, though.

The description of this product reads, “A transformative gel-to-milk pre-cleanser that melts away makeup prepping skin for a deeper cleanse. Made with Pink Kaolin Clay + Rose Water. Works for all skin types.”
I have found this product to be gentle on my skin and not to cause any irritation at all.
It seems to do a good job of cleansing away my own makeup, in most cases without my feeling the need for a second cleanse.
I do think that it might not be optimal for cleasing heavy makeup, especially difficult-to-remove products such as waterproof foundation or waterproof mascara, though.
The only fragrance ingredient is rose flower water. I have found the scent to be mild and pleasant.
I might consider buying this product again.

Mad Hippie Cream Cleanser – $16
♥ Lisa’s Choice
♣ Living Clean Superstar
Living Clean Rating: 10 out of 10
Performance Rating: (5 / 5)
Ingredients Rating: (5 / 5)
Lisa Irritation Level: None
Noteworthy Ingredients: Sesame Oil, Shea Butter, Carrageenan Gum, Sodium PCA, Green Tea, Jojoba, Squalene, Organic Macadamia Oil, Organic Jojoba Oil, Yeast Extract, Glucosamine HCL, Sodium Hyaluronate, Algae Extract, Orchid Extract
The Mad Hippie site describes this product as follows: “This mildly acidic cream cleanser is pH perfection, supporting the skin’s natural balance of protective oils. Many overly alkaline cleansers strip the skin of the acid mantle, a protective layer of oils. Additional antioxidants and hydrating oils leave the skin soft & smooth while gently washing away dirt and impurities.”
The ingredients include jojoba oil, orchid extract, organic macadamia oil, sodium hyaluronate, algae extract, sesame oil, green tea, sodium PCA, and shea butter.
Although there are some Mad Hippie skincare products that have not worked well on my skin, this cream cleanser has been quite good for me.
It feels nicely moisturizing to my skin and has been effective at removing the amount of makeup that I wear, without irritating my skin.
It does have a noticeable floral-type scent (perhaps from the orchid extract?), but I have not found that to be objectionable.
The ingredient list looks like it would be tolerated by most people and the price is reasonable.
Although I avoid carrageenan in food products, probably it’s fine when used as a thickener in a cleanser.
I went through a whole bottle of this product and would consider buying it again.
The only hesitation I have is that it is my experience that although sesame oil (listed as the second ingredient) is a great moisturizing agent, it also tends to go rancid fairly easily.
I suggest using this product up in a timely fashion, therefore.

Noteworthy Ingredients: Sunflower Seed Oil, Avocado Oil, Grape Seed Oil, Apple Fruit Extract, Glycine, Lysine HCL, Threonine, Arginine, Proline, PCA, Sodium PCA
The description of this product states, “The essential first step to reset and cleanse skin. This antioxidant-rich gel cleanser gently lifts away makeup, excess oil and impurities leaving skin fresh, hydrated and balanced without any harsh sulfates that can dry or strip skin. Purify: This gentle formula easily removes dirt, makeup and impurities without any harsh sulfates or detergents. Skin is left feeling fresh and clean, never dry or tight. Soothe: Enriched with blend of 7 amino acids, this hydrating cleanser helps condition, soothe and boost resilience for a soft and smooth complexion. Refresh: A potent blend of fruit extracts, rich in antioxidants, helps promote brighter, healthier-looking skin while limiting damage caused by environmental stress.”
I really like this product and usually use it any time I am wearing makeup that I am not sure that my regular cream cleanser will easily remove.
It does not remove silicone-containing foundation or primer to my satisfaction, and I would guess that it also does not remove waterproof mascara (which I do not wear), however.
I have found this product to be very gentle on my face and not to irritate my eyes at all, even when I use it to remove eye makeup.
My face feels nice enough after I use it that I rarely feel the need to use a second cleansing step to remove traces of it.
Although it contains a few potentially problematic ingredients (including potassium hydroxide, sodium benzoate, sodium lactate, phenoxyethanol, and some citrus-based ingredients), I have not found it to be annoying to my face at all.
The fragrance of the product is very light, to the point of being basically non-existent.
I expect that I will buy this product again.

Vanicream Gentle Facial Cleanser – $5
Living Clean Rating: 7 out of 10

Ingredients Rating: (4 / 5)
Lisa Irritation Level: None

This product has a pretty clean ingredient list and seems to be very popular among consumers as well as recommended by at least some dermatologists.
Although my skin reacted badly to the Vanicream moisturizer, I have not felt like this cleanser has caused my face to become noticeably irritated.
However, I still don’t feel that it has been as good for my face as some of the other cream cleansers that I have liked, probably due to the fact that it seems to be more drying than is optimal for me.
Maybe if I had skin that was more on the oily or normal side, I would like it more.
It certainly is an affordably priced product, at any rate.

CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser ($5). This cleanser caused irritation to both my eyes and my facial skin. I am suspicious of the behentrimonium methosulfate, an emulsifier that is frequently used in hair conditioners but that I have only rarely seen used in skincare products. EWG gives the product a 2 (green) despite flagging several problematic ingredients, including the behentrimonium methosulfate (4), phenoxyethanol (4), PEG-40 stearate (3), and polysorbate-20 (3).
Glossier Milky Jelly Cleanser ($19): This product was irritating to my skin. EWG flags as problematic PEG-7 glyceryl cocoate (4), polaxamer 184 (4), comfrey root extract (4), polysorbate-80 (3), benzoic acid (3), and sodium hydroxide (4). The product also contains xylitol.
About This Website
The Living Clean in a Dirty World shopping website is designed to provide guidance to those seeking out products that are relatively low in toxicity and that provide generally positive user experiences.
Although the skincare and makeup sections have a particular focus on products appropriate for women who are in their 40’s or beyond, the information provided may be useful for other people as well.
The products are curated by Lisa Petrison, who has been focused on helping people to improve their health by avoiding toxicity since 2008 and who heads the Paradigm Change organization.
Her Living Clean in a Dirty World blog site discusses a variety of topics of relevance to those who are working to pursue a more natural lifestyle with less exposure to harmful toxicity.
Lisa is the author of several books, including A Beginner’s Guide to Mold Avoidance (co-written with Erik Johnson).
She also runs the Paradigm Change website (focusing on issues related to toxic mold illness) and the Mold Avoiders Facebook group (designed for the discussion of all topics of interest to those pursuing the mold avoidance approach described in the “Beginner’s Guide” book).
Lisa was born in August 1964 and has yet to try cosmetic surgery, Botox or other cosmetic treatments requiring interactions with a physician, or beauty products containing retinoids.
In her former life, Lisa worked as a business school professor, as a marketing consultant to a variety of large companies, and as a reporter covering the advertising industry.
She holds a Ph.D. in marketing and social psychology from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University as well as B.S./M.S. degrees from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern.
Lisa would like to extend a special note of appreciation to Ellen Kleiman-Redden for her help in trying out products and discussing issues related to this project.
She also would like to thank the many members of the Mold Avoiders community who have shared suggestions of products to be included here.
A Note From Lisa
Products that I have tried or researched and that I have not found to be acceptable from a toxicity standpoint have been omitted entirely from the discussions on this website.
However, since a goal of this project is to introduce people to a range of options in terms of price and functionality, some products discussed on this site include ingredients that may not be appropriate for everyone.
It’s my hope that all individuals making their way to this site will find at least a few options from each product category that meet all of their own needs and wants from a variety of perspectives.
The vast majority of cosmetics marketers now offer affiliate programs in which Internet content creators may earn commissions if people who are referred to the companies’ sites by clicking on links end up making purchases.
I participate in quite a few individual affiliate programs as well as in the Sovrn/Viglinks program (which automatically converts regular links into revenue-generating links).
