Face & Body Balms

Description

November 1, 2022

By Lisa Petrison

Until the past couple of years, balms such as the ones discussed on this page were primarily used to address rough patches of skin or other problem spots, mostly on the body and lips but sometimes on the face as well.

More recently, a trend has developed where balms of various sorts are used as cosmetics on the face, to provide a glowy hydrated look.

Cosmetic balms containing added color or shimmer are discussed on the Color Balms page in the Makeup section.

This page discusses untinted balms that may be used for cosmetic purposes as well as functional purposes.

Boom Boomstick Glo – $28

Living Clean Rating: 9 out of 10

Performance Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Ingredients Rating: 5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

Lisa Irritation Level: None

The description of this product reads, “Carry the power of Boomsilk anywhere you go. We created Boomstick Glo to give you the same powerful moisturizer as a lightweight stick. When  you use Boomstick Glo, you enjoy the same rich, organic ingredients including honey, beeswax, bee pollen, propolis and extra virgin olive oil. This means you get all the same natural goodness for your skin – only in a convenient, easy-to-use stick.”

Although this Boomstick has a pretty clean ingredients list and is convenient for use on the go, I found the product to be on the hard side and thus a little bit frustrating to use.

I also don’t feel that olive oil is my favorite moisturizer in terms of its effects on my skin.

Burt’s Bees Goodness Glows Miracle Balm – $10

Living Clean Rating: 8 out of 10

Performance Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Ingredients Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Lisa Irritation Level: Very Mild (smell/taste)

Processed Fragrance: Natural Flavor, Limonene, Linalool

The description of this product reads, “Soothe, soften and moisturize dry skin on your face, lips, cuticles, elbows, or anywhere. Lightweight and non-greasy with a dewy finish, multi-purpose Goodness Glows Miracle Balm is made with a natural plant-derived emollient that absorbs quickly, instantly hydrating and softening skin.”

This product has a soft hydrating texture that seems very close to the Jones Road Miracle Balm but is much more reasonably priced.

The main negative in my opinion is the presence of the fruity “natural flavor” that Burt’s Bees uses in so many of its products.

Although I have smelled and tasted much worse things in cosmetics products than the Burt’s Bees natural fragrance, I still would have preferred them to have left it out entirely.

The additional fragrance ingredients of limonene and linalool also are included.

The ingredients list also includes soybean oil and citric acid, which are two ingredients that I avoid in foods and don’t especially want in my cosmetics either.

The affordable price of the product compared to some of its competitors is a definite plus though.

♣ Living Clean Superstar

Living Clean Rating: 10 out of 10

Performance Rating: 5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

Ingredients Rating: 5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

Processed Fragrance: None

The description of this product reads, “This vegan, petrochemical-free balm offers nourishing hydration anywhere you need it – hands, feet, lips, cuticles, or any other stubborn dry spots.”

This feels to me like a quite light as well as clean version of petrolatum jelly.

It has done a very good job of delivering concentrated moisture to my hands and to other especially dry skin on my body.

I have felt good about using it and don’t feel that it has been irritating for me at all.

I hope that the company continues to offer it.

Dr. Bronner’s Organic Magic Balm – $10

♥ Lisa’s Choice

♣ Living Clean Superstar

Living Clean Rating: 10 out of 10

Performance Rating: 5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

Ingredients Rating: 5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

Lisa Irritation Level: None

Processed Fragrance: None

The description of this product reads, “Dr. Bronner’s Unscented Organic Magic Balm provides instant relief and protection from wind-cold-clothing that has rubbed you raw. Soothe skin safely and simply—no synthetic ingredients, certified to the same National Organic Program that certifies food. Made from a soothing blend of organic beeswax, organic coconut, organic avocado oil, organic jojoba oil and U.S.-grown hemp oil.”

I think that the ingredients sound great to me and that the product does feel very good.

It has not caused any irritation and seems to have been helpful for my dry skin issues.

I think that this product could be a good option for those who want to experiment with trying out a balmy and glowy makeup look but are not sure that they will be able to tolerate the Jones Road Miracle Balm (or who just don’t want to pay Jones Road prices).

The Dr. Bronner’s Magic Balm is also available in an Arnica-Menthol formula that is stated as being intended for use on sore muscles and achy joints.

The ingredient list consists of organic avocado oil, organic coconut oil, organic beeswax, organic mentha arvensis (peppermint) oil, organic olive oil, organic camphor oil, organic menthol crystals, organic jojoba oil, organic hemp seed oil, organic arnica montana oil, organic mentha piperita oil, and tocopherol.

I think that sounds like a product with some good potential to be helpful and plan to give it a try soon.

Honest Eczema Soothing Therapy Balm – $15

Living Clean Rating: 6 out of 10

Performance Rating: 2 out of 5 stars (2 / 5)

Ingredients Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Lisa Irritation Level: None

Processed Fragrance: None

The description of this product reads, “Our (steroid free!) Honest Beauty eczema balm blends prebiotics and natural ingredients like colloidal oatmeal, coconut and safflower oils to soothe baby’s skin and give you peace of mind.”

This is a new product from Honest.

It contains substantial amounts of safflower seed oil and olive oil, along with smaller amounts of shea butter, coconut oil, squalane and allantoin.

I found it to be irritating to my hands and therefore have no interest in continuing to use it.

My suspicion is that the substantial amount of non-organic oatmeal in the product is contaminated with glyphosate and thus serving as an irritant for me.

Honest Magic Beauty Balm Stick – $15

♣ Living Clean Superstar

Living Clean Rating: 9 out of 10

Performance Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Ingredients Rating: 5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

Lisa Irritation Level: None

The description of this product reads, “This do-it-all beauty balm stick leaves skin feeling moisturized, while its supernatural blend of organic fruit + botanical oils (like Coconut, Olive, Argan + Jojoba) with conditioning Shea Butter to soothe and soften dry spots with just a touch. It also adds a gorgeous, dewy highlight to your lips, eyes or cheeks with just an effortless swipe.”

I had thought that this product was going to be the same as the Honest Beauty Balm Conpact, but the formula actually is somewhat different.

The stick does not include any essential oils and feels a little better to me for that reason.

The stick does include some mica and therefore gives the skin a little bit of sparkly highlight.

I think that in theory this is a fine product that I don’t mind using.

In actual practice I haven’t felt too interested in reaching for it very often though.

Jones Road Hippie Stick – $32

Lisa’s Choice

♣ Living Clean Superstar

Living Clean Rating: 9 out of 10

Performance Rating: 5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

Ingredients Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Lisa Irritation Level: None

Processed Fragrance: Orange Oil, Spearmint Oil, Lavandin Oil

The description of this product reads, “A universal balm that melts onto face, body, hair, and anywhere you need moisture, Hippie Stick acts as a barrier against the elements. A buttery and non-draggy everywhere-moisturizer that smells like bliss. Run Hippie Stick over any area that needs deep moisture. Face, legs, hands, elbows, fingers, heels.”

This large balm stick has a rather soft and creamy consistency and a noticeable smell from the orange/spearmint/lavender oil mix.

I really like the smell of it and have enjoyed using this on my hands at night as well as a spot treatment on dry or rough areas of my body.

I haven’t felt like it would be a great idea for me to use this on my delicate facial skin, but it does not seem to have irritated the skin on my body at all.

Perhaps because of the high concentration of essential oil, I feel like this product has remained fresh so far despite the fact that the first ingredient is sunflower oil.

I do really like this product and would be interested in buying another container of it to prepare for the winter months.

Jones Road Miracle Balm – $38

Living Clean Rating: 8 out of 10

Performance Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Ingredients Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Lisa Irritation Level: Very Mild

Processed Fragrance: Grapefruit Oil, Orange Oil, Rosemary Oil, Rose Geranium Oil

The description of this product reads, “Miracle Balm is the secret of no-makeup makeup: a wash of soft-focus moisture to perfect and enhance skin. A light-reflecting superproduct that’s as versatile as it is simple to use. Wear Miracle Balm alone or layer on top of foundation for an instant refresh. Apply balm using your fingertips, palms, a brush, or a sponge onto cheeks, lips, eyelids, or anywhere you want to tint or glow.”

The product is available in a natural shade (with just a very small amount of color and mica) and in a range of tinted shades.

It is suggested by the company as a skincare product (such as something to be worn to bed for moisturizing benefits) as well as a makeup product.

The product contains high levels of essential oils that have the potential to irritate many people’s skin.

My feeling about this product is that while it works well enough as a makeup product that it may be worth using it for that purpose for those who can tolerate it, the high amounts of essential oils make it less ideal when considered just for its skincare benefits.

That is why I have given the product 5 Stars in the makeup section but only 4 Stars here in the skincare section.

Personally, I have found that this product invariably causes my skin to itch and feel a little uncomfortable starting about 15-30 minutes after I put it on, and that this tends to last until I wash my face.

I suspect that the rose geranium oil is the main problem for me, but some of the other ingredients also could be an issue.

The description of this product reads, “Our breakthrough miracle skin balm with over 20 uses, Sweet Bee Magic All in One Healing Balm is the pure, natural, organic answer to a multitude of concerns for face and body. All in One Healing Balm is gentle and safe for use on even the most sensitive or acne-prone skin and is perfect for daily use by all ages, skin types and genders. This multi-purpose balm is recommended by dermatologists, cosmetic surgeons and burn centers for troubling skin conditions from head-to-toe.”

This is a simple balm consisting of just olive oil, beeswax, honey, propolis, bee pollen and royal jelly. Most of the ingredients are organic.

I first purchased this balm maybe a decade ago.

While I’m no longer convinced that olive oil is the best moisturizer for me, this product has been okay for me in terms of addressing dry skin on my body.

I haven’t ever tried using it on my face though.

About This Website

The Living Clean in a Dirty World shopping website is designed to provide guidance to those seeking out products that are relatively low in toxicity and that provide generally positive user experiences.

Although the skincare and makeup sections have a particular focus on products appropriate for women who are in their 40’s or beyond, the information provided may be useful for other people as well.

The products are curated by Lisa Petrison, who has been focused on helping people to improve their health by avoiding toxicity since 2008 and who heads the Paradigm Change organization.

Her Living Clean in a Dirty World blog site discusses a variety of topics of relevance to those who are working to pursue a more natural lifestyle with less exposure to harmful toxicity.

Lisa is the author of several books, including A Beginner’s Guide to Mold Avoidance (co-written with Erik Johnson).

She also runs the Paradigm Change website (focusing on issues related to toxic mold illness) and the Mold Avoiders Facebook group (designed for the discussion of all topics of interest to those pursuing the mold avoidance approach described in the “Beginner’s Guide” book).

Lisa was born in August 1964 and has yet to try cosmetic surgery, Botox or other cosmetic treatments requiring interactions with a physician, or beauty products containing retinoids.

In her former life, Lisa worked as a business school professor, as a marketing consultant to a variety of large companies, and as a reporter covering the advertising industry.

She holds a Ph.D. in marketing and social psychology from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University as well as B.S./M.S. degrees from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern.

Lisa would like to extend a special note of appreciation to Ellen Kleiman-Redden for her help in trying out products and discussing issues related to this project.

She also would like to thank the many members of the Mold Avoiders community who have shared suggestions of products to be included here.

A Note From Lisa

Products that I have tried or researched and that I have not found to be acceptable from a toxicity standpoint have been omitted entirely from the discussions on this website.

However, since a goal of this project is to introduce people to a range of options in terms of price and functionality, some products discussed on this site include ingredients that may not be appropriate for everyone.

It’s my hope that all individuals making their way to this site will find at least a few options from each product category that meet all of their own needs and wants from a variety of perspectives.

The vast majority of cosmetics marketers now offer affiliate programs in which Internet content creators may earn commissions if people who are referred to the companies’ sites by clicking on links end up making purchases.

I participate in quite a few individual affiliate programs as well as in the Sovrn/Viglinks program (which automatically converts regular links into revenue-generating links).

Reader comments about products discussed on this website are very welcome.
