This page discusses skincare products containing Vitamin C and other antioxidants.
According to the website Harvard Health, “Topical vitamin C is a science-backed, dermatologist-favorite ingredient that may help slow early skin aging, prevent sun damage, and improve the appearance of wrinkles, dark spots, and acne. Vitamin C is an antioxidant, meaning it fights harmful free radicals (toxins) that come in contact with your skin from external sources like air pollution, or from inside the body as a result of normal processes like your metabolism. Free radicals can damage the skin, and applying topical vitamin C can combat free radicals and may improve the skin’s overall appearance.”
While Vitamin C skincare products are very popular, there seems to be quite a bit of disagreement even among experts in terms of which criteria should be used to identify the best products.
For instance, products may contain different types of Vitamin C, and this may lead to variations in factors such as the most effective concentration of product, how important it is to protect the product carefully from light and air, and the appropriateness of including particular other ingredients in the formulas.
In addition, because Vitamin C can be irritating, the optimal strength of the active ingredients may vary substantially across users based on their particular skincare goals as well as their sensitivity levels.
Especially since I have been focused much less on skin brightening than on other skin issues, I have yet to have reached any conclusions on which of the many Vitamin C serums on the market are likely to be best for those who want to see major results from using them.
I do feel that the use of Vitamin C seems to have been a little helpful to my skin, but it mostly has been in the context of using milder formulations since those seem to be less irritating.
My skin seems to have responded particularly well to a few moisturizing creams that include some Vitamin C, and so I have listed those on this page along with the serums.
I also frequently use only a small amount of Vitamin C serum, mixed with a good bit of moisturizing cream before application, to increase the likelihood that my skin will not be irritated by it.
Since I am far from an expert in terms of assessing the efficacy of Vitamin C serums, the discussion on this page is focused mostly on the presence in Vitamin C skincare products of various other problematic ingredients that people may want to avoid.
While I will share my own personal experiences with Vitamin C products, these may not be applicable to everyone since many people likely may benefit from much higher strengths than seem to be optimal for me.

Vitamin C Type: Bis-Glyceryl Ascorbate, Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate
Processed Fragrance: Bergamot Oil, Mandarin Orange Oil, Orange Flower Oil, Orange Oil, Vanillin, Citral, Limonene, Linalool
Lisa Irritation Level: Very Mild
The Beautycounter website describes this product as follows: “This ultra-potent 10% blend of two forms of vitamin C, turmeric, and camu camu instantly brightens skin and helps even skin tone. The antioxidant-rich formula also helps defend skin from the damaging effects of environmental stressors, revealing a more youthful-looking complexion. A unique blend of two ultra-stable forms of vitamin C delivers a supercharged 10% potency. Our quick-absorbing formula allows for easy layering and an instant boost of radiance. Leaves skin glowing and promotes an even skin tone. Clinically proven to even skin tone, improve skin radiance/brightness.”
The two forms of Vitamin C appear to be bis-glyceryl ascorbate and tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate, which are different than the forms used in many of the other products mentioned on this page.
The ingredient list for this product mentions several kinds of citrus essential oils as well as a number of botanical extracts (including limonene and linalool, which EWG considers to be potentially problematic).
However, EWG states that the amounts of these substances in the formula are small enough that the organization does not consider them to be a concern, and thus has given the product “EWG Verified” status.
I obtained a small sample bottle of this product and thought that it was very slightly irritating to my skin.
Whether this was due just to the product being strong or to the fragrance ingredients, I don’t know.
The product also smelled rather citrus-y, but that part was not bothersome to me.
In general, I feel that although the product is using different forms of Vitamin C than I have seen in other similar products, it still seems to me to be quite expensive.
I would need to be more convinced that this product was unusually good to pay that much money for it, I think.

Infused with Vitamin C, Niacinamide (the powerhouse ingredient known to improve appearance of skin tone), and Pearl, this lightweight moisturizer instantly boosts radiance and quenches skin for up to 24 hours of moisture. I like this product and feel that my skin has done well with it.
Because I have come to think that Vitamin C serums that are too strong can be slightly irritating to my skin, I am rather appreciative of the fact that this product contains an apparently lower level of Vitamin C along with some good hydrators (including niacinamide, squalane, sodium hyaluronate, and sodium acetylated hyaluronate).
It is possible that I also have done well with it because it includes Saccharomyces Ferment Filtrate, which to my understanding means that it has some good bacteria in it.
The only ingredient that EWG lists as being potentially problematic is malic acid, which is included as an exfoliator.
Especially since it provides the Vitamin C benefits, I would consider buying it again.

Vitamin C Type: Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate

The description of this product on the Honest website reads, “A glow-getting serum that boosts radiance for a brighter, even looking complexion. Made with Vitamin C, Hyaluronic Acid + Pearl. Works for all skin types. Clinically tested to improve skin tone, elasticity, and hydration after 2 & 4 weeks. With essential elements like Vitamin C, Diglucosyl Gallic Acid and Artichoke + Clover extracts, this day-brightening serum helps skintone appear more even and radiant. Light Reflecting Pearl brings instant illumination, while Hyaluronic Acid boosts hydration for plumper-looking skin.”
I wrote to Honest and asked about the percentage of Vitamin C in this formula. The response that I got back from Honest Client Services was, “Thank you for reaching out. Due to our unique proprietary formula, we cannot share our percent of Vitamin C for the serum.”
In the ingredient list, sodium ascorbyl phosphate (the only Vitamin C) is listed as the 24th ingredient. It therefore would seem that its percentage in the formula is less than 5%.
It’s hard to estimate how strong the product compared to competitive products, though, since different types of Vitamin C differ in their strength.
For instance, while the No B.S. product contains 20% Vitamin C, only part of that is sodium ascorbyl phosphate.
In any case, I’ve used up most of a container of the Honest product and think that it feels about the same in terms of the level of irritation as the other Vitamin C products that I have tried.
It’s hard for me to know how much of an effect it has had on my skin quality since I have been using other products, however.
Although the ingredient list mentions several non-active ingredients such as preservatives that have the potential to be problematic (and that I think have bothered my skin when used in certain other products), EWG states that the levels are low enough that they do not consider them to be a concern.
Like a number of other Honest products, this serum contains hydrolyzed sodium hyaluronate. This type of sodium hyaluronate consists of very small molecules that have the potential to be especially effective at hydrating the skin but that some people also say have more chance of being irritating.
I have not found my own skin to be irritated at all by other Honest products that contain it, though.
Another possibly problematic ingredient is carrageenan, which is a seaweed derivative that sometimes can be contaminated with pollutants.
The opaque plastic pump for this serum seems designed to protect the product from both light and air. Although sodium ascorbyl phosphate is supposedly less affected by oxidation than some other types of Vitamin C, this still seems that it could be a good thing.
However, I see on the Amazon site that there are a number of complaints about the pump for the product not working very well. I have not had any problems with this myself, but I bought the product directly from Honest rather than from Amazon.
Another issue with this type of pump is that it is impossible to tell how much product is left in the container until it totally runs out.

I have done quite well with this rich cream, which contains several different forms of Vitamin C as well as a number of different botanicals.
Of all the Vitamin C products that I have tried so far, this one seems to be the best. The fact that the Vitamin C is part of a cream rather than in more concentrated form in a serum seems like it might be good for my delicate skin.
This night cream is also quite hydrating and generally has made my skin feel good.
The cream has a pretty strong fruity/flowery type smell that made me fear that I was going to react to it. My skin actually seems to really like it, though.
Although I really like the smell of jasmine oil, I’m not sure that that is what I am smelling most in this cream. I do feel like the fragrance of the product is pleasant though.
The product comes with a little wooden spoon, apparently for hygiene reasons. I found that spoon a little hard to keep clean and have been using my Jones Road Spatula instead.
The fact that the first ingredient (other than water) is safflower oil made me wonder how long it would take before the product went rancid, but it seemed to continue to be fine even six months after I opened it.
Maybe all the Vitamin C as well as the jasmine oil in the product helped to preserve it.

The copy for this product on the Mad Hippie website reads, “Our award-winning serum is a harmonious blend of antioxidants that work wonders on improving the overall appearance of the skin.”
About the Vitamin C (Sodium Acorbyl Phosphate), the website copy reads, “One of the most vital ingredients in any effective skin care regimen, vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant and can help reduce the appearance of wrinkles & discoloration. Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate, a more stable form of vitamin C than the commonly used L-Ascorbic Acid found in most skin care products, provides the same benefits, without the risk of oxidation and irritation that is often associated with L-Ascorbic Acid. Our Vitamin C Serum utilizes sodium ascorbyl phosphate (SAP), a form of vitamin C that is much more stable and less prone to oxidation than some traditionally used forms of vitamin C. This serum is wonderful for both sensitive and acne-prone skin! The recommended percentage for efficacy without irritation is different for various forms of vitamin C, and therefore they cannot be compared simply on a percentage basis. Our serum would be comparable to a 15-20% L-ascorbic acid serum. We use a combination of vitamin C, vitamin E and ferulic acid as this trio of ingredients has been shown to offer a compounding antioxidant effect.”
Following is what the website copy says about other ingredients in the formula: “Vitamin E – Protective antioxidant that has been shown to reduce the appearance of wrinkles & discoloration. Ferulic Acid – A natural antioxidant found in the cell walls of plants. When combined with vitamins C & E, Ferulic Acid has been shown in studies to have a compounding antioxidant effect. Hyaluronic Acid – A naturally occurring substance in the body, hyaluronic acid begins to deplete as we age. Applied topically it can help increase the plumped up look of the skin. Konjac Root – Exotic flower from Asia, helps to soften & smooth the skin while forming a thin protective barrier. Rich in nutrients such as copper, zinc, phosphorus, fatty acids, protein, carbohydrates, lipids, potassium, magnesium, iron, niacin, folic acid & vitamins A, E, C, D & B. Chamomile Extract – Provides a thin protective shield, while naturally soothing and calming the skin. Clary Sage – Helps eliminate overly-dry or overly-oily skin. Acts as natural toner & astringent.”
This product comes in an amber glass bottle with a dropper. Mad Hippie’s argument seems to be that because they are using sodium ascorbyl phosphate – a more stable form of vitamin C – there is less need to worry about oxidation of the product.
This product is on the thicker side and has not seemed to irritate my skin at all.
I rather like the mild smell of it and have enjoyed using it.
Both EWG and Think Dirty rate this product as excellent in terms of the ingredients included.
I may buy this product again if I do not find another Vitamin C serum that I like better.

The serum is essential oil and microcidal preservative-free, making it safe for even the most allergy-prone, sensitive skin, and can be used day and night. This dual purpose serum protects by day and repairs at night, and is safe for use by all skin types. A good alternative to Retinol for pregnant women.”

I obtained a small sample of this product, which was enough to use on my face a few times.
I don’t think that it irritated my face at all, though I can’t say for sure what would happen if I used it for more than a couple of days.
I may buy a regular-sized bottle of this product at some point to give it more of a try.

The description of this product reads, “An active-rich serum to restore radiance to dull and tired skin. Lack of sleep, stress and smoking are known to trigger harmful free radicals, which oxidise the skin cells and create a dull complexion. The high concentration of vitamin C in this serum effectively combats this process. Vitamin C (11%): This molecule is highly-prized for its ability to restore radiance, reduce pigmentation spots, and slow down photoaging. Vitamin C also helps stimulate the production of keratinocytes, which are cells present in the epidermis that protect the skin and reinforce its elasticity. It also helps the skin receive more oxygen, leaving it visibly more toned, radiant and soft while reducing the appearance of pores. Albizia Julibrissin Extract (3%): Also known as the silk tree, this native Asian plant boasts delicate fan-shaped pink flowers. Its extract contains properties known for restoring radiance to the skin. Albizia Julibrissin extract also brings vitality back to fatigued-looking skin caused by glycation and glycoxidation. Glycation is a natural chemical reaction of sugar molecules attaching themselves to the proteins of the dermis. These proteins are then more sensitive to oxidation (glycoxidation) which results in more free radicals, and more fine lines around the eyes. While the phenomenon of glycation is inevitable in any living organism, it can be slowed down by a balanced, less sugary diet and good skincare.”

About This Website
The Living Clean in a Dirty World shopping website is designed to provide guidance to those seeking out products that are relatively low in toxicity and that provide generally positive user experiences.
Although the skincare and makeup sections have a particular focus on products appropriate for women who are in their 40’s or beyond, the information provided may be useful for other people as well.
The products are curated by Lisa Petrison, who has been focused on helping people to improve their health by avoiding toxicity since 2008 and who heads the Paradigm Change organization.
Her Living Clean in a Dirty World blog site discusses a variety of topics of relevance to those who are working to pursue a more natural lifestyle with less exposure to harmful toxicity.
Lisa is the author of several books, including A Beginner’s Guide to Mold Avoidance (co-written with Erik Johnson).
She also runs the Paradigm Change website (focusing on issues related to toxic mold illness) and the Mold Avoiders Facebook group (designed for the discussion of all topics of interest to those pursuing the mold avoidance approach described in the “Beginner’s Guide” book).
Lisa was born in August 1964 and has yet to try cosmetic surgery, Botox or other cosmetic treatments requiring interactions with a physician, or beauty products containing retinoids.
In her former life, Lisa worked as a business school professor, as a marketing consultant to a variety of large companies, and as a reporter covering the advertising industry.
She holds a Ph.D. in marketing and social psychology from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University as well as B.S./M.S. degrees from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern.
Lisa would like to extend a special note of appreciation to Ellen Kleiman-Redden for her help in trying out products and discussing issues related to this project.
She also would like to thank the many members of the Mold Avoiders community who have shared suggestions of products to be included here.
About The Products
Products that I have tried or researched and that I have not found to be acceptable from a toxicity standpoint have been omitted entirely from the discussions on this website.
However, since a goal of this project is to introduce people to a range of options in terms of price and functionality, some products discussed on this site include ingredients that may not be appropriate for everyone.
It’s my hope that all individuals making their way to this site will find at least a few options from each product category that meet all of their own needs and wants from a variety of perspectives.
The vast majority of cosmetics marketers now offer affiliate programs in which Internet content creators may earn commissions if people who are referred to the companies’ sites by clicking on links end up making purchases.
I participate in quite a few individual affiliate programs as well as in the Sovrn/Viglinks program (which automatically converts regular links into revenue-generating links).
Links on this page that may result in affiliate income may include – but are not necessarily limited to – those from the following companies: Alpyn Beauty, Amazon, Aveda, Beautycounter, Beekman 1802, Cocokind, Credo, Goop, Honest, Mad Hippie, Pharmaca, Sephora, Three Ships, Typology, Ulta.
Reader comments (positive or negative) about products discussed on this website are very welcome.
Thoughts may be shared either by posting them in the comments section at the bottom of this page or by sending them directly to me at the following email address:

Companies that would like to offer me complimentary products to try out may contact me at this address as well.
Individuals who are seeking out less-toxic products or who are interested in pursuing a cleaner and healthier lifestyle may want to sign up to receive occasional email newsletters from Living Clean in a Dirty World.
