The serums discussed on this page claim to soften wrinkles, strengthen the skin barrier, or supply healthful substances (such as collagen, ceramides or peptides) that may be in short supply in maturing skin.

While some of these serums include “phyto-retinols” (herbs such as bakuchiol that have been shown in studies to be helpful with skin issues such as wrinkles), products containing actual retinoids are discussed on the Retinol Serums page of this website.

I had never used any anti-aging serums at all before starting this project and do feel that introducing them has been generally helpful to my skin.

While serums tend to be expensive, I have come to the conclusion that spending more money on facial serums and oils, and somewhat less money on other skincare products, may be a good strategy for me in terms of maximizing the benefits that my skin receives.

Because I suspect that my own skin has responded particularly well to serums that contain probiotics, I have noted the specific fermented ingredients that each of these serums contains toward the top of the listings.

Further discussion of this topic can be found on the Microbiome Support page of this website.

Of course, skincare in general is very individualistic and the benefits of serums in particular may be cumulative over time.

This page is designed to provide a starting point for people in terms of deciding on which ones to try by discussing the ingredients as well as my own short-term experiences with the products.

I hope that those who have tried these serums or other similar products will share their experiences with them in the comments section.

The product contains a variety of botanicals (some of them wildcrafted in the area near Jackson Hole, Wyoming) as well as several moisturizers (including sunflower seed oil, niacinamide, squalane, sodium hyaluronate, and jojoba seed oil).

The product also contains lactic acid as an exfoliator.

I have enjoyed using this serum and feel that it has been good for my skin.

I’ve finished off most of a bottle of it and may buy it again.

Annmarie Skin Care Anti-Aging Serum – $62

Overall Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Performance Rating: 3 out of 5 stars (3 / 5)

Ingredients Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Lisa Irritation Level: Very Mild

Processed Fragrance: Vetiver Oil, Sweet Myrrh Oil

Fermented Ingredients: None

The description of this product on the Annmarie website states, “Our bestselling herbal serum blend will leave your skin hydrated, supple and soft. This versatile, aloe vera-based serum provides active nutrients for all skin types, firming and tightening the appearance of aging skin. Hyaluronic acid hydrates, while the herbal extracts buddleja davidii and edelweiss protect skin from environmental stressors. Life everlasting flowers soothe and refresh.”

The product contains a wide variety of botanical extracts, along with substantial amounts of aloe vera, squalane and carrageenan.

Although this seems to be a popular product and although I like some of Annmarie’s other offerings, I have not been feeling that great about using it on my skin.

While it is possible that I am a little allergic to one or more of the botanicals that are used, I also wonder about the carrageenan (a particular type of red seaweed). Although this is still allowed in organic foods, many people believe that it actually can be an especially inflammatory substance (possibly due to periodic toxic contamination of the seaweed).

In any case, although I am very enthusiastic about some of Annmarie’s face oils, I don’t much like this product and don’t see myself buying it again.

Lisa Irritation Level: Very Mild

Processed Fragrance: Roman Chamomile Oil, Clary Sage Oil, Neroli Oil, Natural Fragrance, Linalool, Citronellol, Limonene, Geraniol

Fermented Ingredients: Alteromonas Ferment Extract, Saccharomyces Lysate

The Aveda website states about this product, “Instantly soothe skin and make it more resilient with Calm Concentrate, a 97% naturally derived treatment serum. An algae extract helps reduce the look of redness and irritation, while pomegranate fruit extracts known in ayurvedic tradition for its soothing properties, helps calm the look of skin. Contains more than one-hundred thousand red raspberry plant stem cells known for their restorative powers. Dermatologist-tested. Non-acnegenic. Suitable for sensitive skin.”

This product contains a wide variety of botanical-based processed fragrances. PEG-40 hydrogenated castor oil, phenoxyethanol and sodium benzoate also are included.

Although “Fragrance” is listed in the ingredients, Aveda states that none of their products include any synthetic fragrances.

Still, I don’t quite understand why Aveda would use so many scented ingredients in a product that is specifically designed for sensitive skin.

I don’t think that this serum was very good for my delicate facial skin and so have been using it on my neck and chest instead.

I don’t see myself buying it again.

Aveda Tulasara Firm Concentrate – $65

Overall Rating: 3 out of 5 stars (3 / 5)

Performance Rating: 3 out of 5 stars (3 / 5)

Ingredients Rating: 3 out of 5 stars (3 / 5)

Lisa Irritation Level: Very Mild

Processed Fragrance: Patchouli Oil, Vetiver Oil, Ylang Ylang Oil, Natural Fragrance, Farnesol, Linalool

Fermented Ingredients: None

The Aveda website copy for this product reads, “Skin feels firmer and lines and wrinkles look diminished with Firm Concentrate, a 97% naturally derived treatment serum. A blend of ayurvedic plant extracts including almond seed and sigesbeckia helps skin to instantly feel tighter and feel firmer over time. A peptide + Vitamin C help skin boost its own natural production of collagen for visibly lifted, firmer feeling skin while minimizing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Safflower oleosomes help restore skin’s protective lipid barrier to maintain moisture and strengthen skin’s natural defense against environmental stress. Dermatologist-tested. Non-acnegenic. For all skin types.”

This product contains several potentially problematic chemicals, including benzyl salicylate, benzyl benzoate, sodium benzoate, and PEG-8.

In addition, the product includes quite a few ingredients that seem to have the main purpose of adding fragrance to the product. Although Aveda states that they do not use any synthetics in their products, I don’t feel like it is a good idea for skincare products to include scented ingredients unless they have a functional purpose.

Although I was able to wear this product on my face without it experiencing actual irritation (such as redness or itching), I do not think that my facial skin did very well with it.

I ended up using the whole bottle on my neck and chest. Although this was not the only product I used in this area, I think it might have been helpful since I think that my neck seemed to start looking substantially better during this time.

While I doubt that I would buy it again for this purpose, I do think that the whole Aveda Tulasara line has some effective ingredients in it.

I wish there were a version of it available for sensitive skin since I think I might be really loyal to it if there were.

Bare Minerals Ageless Phyto-Retinol Night Concentrate – $62

Overall Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Performance Rating: 5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

Ingredients Rating: 3 out of 5 stars (3 / 5)

Lisa Irritation Level: None

Processed Fragrance: Natural Fragrance, Limonene, Linalool

Fermented Ingredients: None

The Bare Minerals website describes this product as, “A clean, vegan lotion with plant-based retinol alternative that’s effective at reducing fine lines, wrinkles and sun damage — without irritation. Formulated with 10% Phyto-Retinol, a natural, plant-based retinol alternative that’s as effective as retinol without causing redness, dryness or sensitivity. Fast-absorbing, anti-aging lotion clinically shown to dramatically reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and uneven skin texture and tone in just 1 week. Protein Peptides and Hyaluronic Acid work together to improve texture and smoothness for fresher, more youthful-looking skin.”

The ingredient list for this product includes a number of ingredients that I consider to be non-optimal in skincare, including a few different kinds of botanically based scents, sodium benzoate, and dimethicone (a silicone).

The preservatives polysorbate-20 (which to my understanding is not allowed in products sold by Credo) and phenoxyethanol also are included.

I also feel a little suspicious of the trehalose since that has been associated with the rise of the superbug C. difficile.

While I feel a little put off by the fairly strong scent of this serum, my skin seems to do fine with the product and I have used quite a bit of it.

Recently, though, I have moved more toward using the Beautycounter Countertime serum (which also includes bakuchiol) instead of this one since it has a cleaner ingredient list and since my skin seems to like it a bit better.

Bare Minerals Skinlongevity Long Life Herb Serum – $62

Lisa’s Choice

Overall Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Performance Rating: 5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

Ingredients Rating: 3 out of 5 stars (3 / 5)

Lisa Irritation Level: None

Processed Fragrance: Natural Fragrance, Limonene, Linalool, Geraniol

Fermented Ingredients: Saccharomyces Ferment Lysate Filtrate

The description of this product on the Bare Minerals website reads, “Powered by mineral-rich Long Life Herb, this vegan niacinamide serum dramatically improves visible signs of aging, and is clinically shown to strengthen skin’s barrier to help resist damage. Reduces visible fine lines, improves texture and boosts radiance. Powered by Long Life Herb, a unique, skin-strengthening superfood with more vitamins and minerals than spinach or kale. Infused with Niacinamide, which helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, for smoother-looking skin. Helps skin resist damaging environmental aggressors and stress.”

This is one of my favorite beauty products of everything that I have tried so far. I use a little squirt of it on my face at least once a day and believe that it has made a noticeable difference in terms of helping my skin to become less reactive and healthier looking.

Although the website copy does not bring this up, I see that the product includes “Saccharomyces Ferment Lysate Filtrate,” which is a fermentation of a friendly yeast. I wonder if that (rather than the herbs) may be the primary reason that my skin does well with this product.

In any case, it would have been hard for me to do a project involving trying on a lot of beauty products with dubious ingredients if I hadn’t been using this serum to support my skin barrier, I think.

There is a bit of irony here, though, since the Skinlongevity product itself includes a number of ingredients that EWG considers to be problematic and that I would rather not put on my skin.

Although I feel like this product is not as gentle as it could or likely should be, I don’t feel that it ever has irritated my skin in any significant way that makes me not want to use it.

The ingredients that seem potentially problematic include stearamidopropyl dimethylamine (a lipid-based conditioning agent that I have rarely seen listed for other products) and polysorbate-20 (a surfactant that Credo does not allow in products that it sells). Trehalose is also listed.

It also includes several potentially problematic preservatives, including sodium metabisulfite, sodium lactate, sodium benzoate, and phenoxyethanol.

Although the product lists “fragrance” on the ingredient list, Bare Minerals says that it uses no synthetic fragrance in its products. A few additional botanically derived scents (including limonene and geraniol) also are included.

Although I would rather not have any scents in my skincare products, these are not necessarily deal-breakers for me.

The scent of the product itself is a moderately light citrus-herbal smell that I do not personally find to be objectionable.

I’ve gone through several bottles of this product so far and feel pretty sure that I will continue buying it in the future.

The description of this product on the Beautycounter website reads, “This transformative rejuvenating treatment visibly increases skin firmness and elasticity, while reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Formulated with a powerful blend of peptides, amino acids, and our plant-derived Retinatural Complex, it helps enhance the skin’s moisture barrier function to optimize hydration for a radiant complexion. Retinatural Complex: We took two of the most powerhouse plant-derived ingredients available and created a scientific breakthrough. Bakuchiol has been shown to provide skin-care results that are comparable to retinol—without harmful side effects such as skin irritation and increased sun sensitivity—and Swiss Alpine rose boosts the skin’s antioxidant defense. Tripeptide: Works to help boost skin’s visible firmness and minimize the look of lines and wrinkles while keeping skin plump and hydrated. Amino Acids: Help protect skin from damaging environmental stressors that lead to aging while helping skin maintain optimal levels of hydration.”

This product is unusual in that it does not contain any ingredients that EWG considers to be problematic.

I think that using it has been good for my skin and that it has not caused any irritation at all.

While I feel that my skin has improved substantially over the past year in terms of how youthful it looks, I don’t know how much of that improvement to attribute to this product since I have been trying out many different things.

However, I have worked my way through a whole bottle of this product and believe that it is one of the few items that I will end up repurchasing since it does seem to be good for my skin.

Although I have not been that enthusiastic about everything that I have tried from Beekman 1802, my skin seems to like this serum.

Although I have only used a small sample bottle so far, I like it enough so far that I might try a full-sized bottle ($45 for 1 oz.) at some point.

Cocokind Ceramide Barrier Serum – $22

Lisa’s Choice

♣ Living Clean Superstar

The description of this product on the Cocokind website reads, “The holy grail serum that replaces all other hydrating serums. Optimized with five types of ceramides and lipids, this serum prepares skin for any environment and leaves skin noticeably hydrated, supple, and more comfortable. Restores healthy structure and function to the skin barrier. Deeply hydrates skin and reduces water loss. Supports skin’s natural ceramide production. Helps smooth texture with increased suppleness. Reduces appearance of signs of irritation and softens skin.”

Cocokind products have worked well for me in general, and this product is no exception.

I worked my way through a full bottle of this product and feel that it has had a positive effect on my skin.

While the price is very affordable, it seems to perform at least as well as many of the more expensive serums that I have tried.

The product does include ceteareth-20, which is not allowed in products sold at Credo. Credo states with regard to ceteareth-20 and other products containing ethoxolated ingredients, “These ingredients are synthetically produced using Ethylene Oxide, a carcinogen. 1,4-Dioxane, another carcinogen, often contaminates the Ethoxylated ingredients, but 1,4-Dioxane itself doesn’t appear on ingredient labels. To avoid Ethoxylated compounds look for these common ingredients listed on labels.”

While the possibility of 1,4-Dioxane being present does concern me, I don’t know how frequently this kind of contamination occurs. It’s therefore hard to weigh the risk of it against the benefits of the product.

Since I had a good experience with the product and since the price is affordable, I very well may buy another bottle at some point.

Drunk Elephant Polypeptide Cream – $68

Performance Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Ingredients Rating: 3 out of 5 stars (3 / 5)

Lisa Irritation Level: None

The description of this product on the Drunk Elephant website reads, “This protein moisturizer combines signal peptides, growth factors, supportive amino acids, and pygmy waterlily for immediate improvement in the appearance of skin’s tone, texture and firmness. Protini’s proprietary formula restores younger, revived-looking skin, almost from the first application. Lines, wrinkles, and signs of sun damage appear reduced, and skin feels strengthened and moisturized. Think of Protini in your Drunk Elephant skincare routine like adding a shot of protein to your smoothie. Abundant with proteins and nutrients, it replenishes and restores your skin back to a strong, healthy state. Protini is formulated at the ideal pH of 4.0. 100% free of essential oils, silicones, and fragrance.”

Although this product is stated as being a moisturizer, it actually seems to provide very little moisture to my skin. The ingredient list does not seem to suggest that the product provides much in the way of the usual hydrators (such as hyluronic acid or squalane) or natural oils, either.

The idea that this product does not work very well as a moisturizer is a frequent complaint in online user reviews as well.

I have found that I like this product better if I think of it more like a serum, with the goal of providing some nourishing ingredients to my skin prior to applying a real moisturizing cream on the top.

Regardless of how I think of this product, though, I’m not sure that it has been that great for my skin.

Although I don’t think that it has been noticeably irritating, I have had to really force myself to use it frequently enough to finish off my mini jar of it.

The product contains polysorbate-20 and polysorbate-60, which are emulsifiers that Credo does not allow in products that it sells, due to their containing ethoxylated ingredients. (See the discussion of the Cocokind product listed above for more details.)

Several preservatives also are included.

While I would not likely buy this product again, some other very sensitive people seem to do well with Drunk Elephant products in general and so may also like this serum-like cream.

I would suggest trying to get a mini jar before investing in a full-size one.

Marie Veronique Barrier Restore Serum – $115

Overall Rating: 5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

Performance Rating: 5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

Ingredients Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Lisa Irritation Level: None

Processed Fragrance: None

Fermented Ingredients: Leuconostoc/Radish Root Ferment Filtrate

The description of this product reads, “Kristina Holey intended this product to be initially used for clients with weakened barrier layers, but found through client trials that everyone reported an increase in comfort in their skin, less need for heavy moisturizers, and an absence of dryness even in extreme conditions. The key to healthy skin is water balance of the stratum corneum. This groundbreaking serum maintains barrier function in two ways. First, it replaces Natural Moisturizing Factor (NMF), a collection of water soluble compounds which keep skin cells hydrated. Secondly, it prevents loss of NMF via a liposomal sealing system that traps water molecules instead of letting them absorb into the lower layers of the epidermis. Balances moisture levels, eliminating dry, dehydrated skin. Corrects inflammation, including acne, dermatitis and even aging. Relieves dermatitis-related conditions (allergic and atopic), and fortifies sensitive and rosacea-prone skin.”

I received a small bottle of this product in the Kristina Holey + Marie Veronique Starter Kit (designed for sensitive skin) from Marie Veronique and so was able to give it a somewhat extended try.

I have really liked the way that it feels on my skin and do not feel that it has caused any irritation.

The serum certainly is a very expensive product, but I am feeling good enough about it that I am tempted to buy a full-size bottle to see how much of a difference it makes.

In general, so far I like this line enough that I am thinking that if money were no object, the best thing for my skin might very well be to just use these products and not bother with any others.

I do feel that my skin barrier (which had been destroyed as a result of my briefly trying the Vintner’s Daughter products) improved quite a lot as a result of using these Marie Veronique products.

Maybe if I keep experimenting, I can find other products that I like equally well since these  products are way too expensive for most people to even consider using as part of their daily routine.

The description of the product on The Outset website reads, “Firm. Plump. Rejuvenate. The essential second step to fortify the skin. This potent potion locks in healthy vitamins and vegan collagen to prep your skin for hydration, leaving it feeling smoother, firmer and plumper. Ingredients – Hyaluroset Complex: our signature botanical alternative to hyaluronic acid that nourishes, plumps and smooths. Vegan Collagen: this clean alternative to traditional collagen promotes firmer-looking skin. Brassica Napus Seedcake Extract: helps reduce the look of dark spots for a more even skin tone. Mexican Arnica Flower Extract: helps to soothe and hydrate the skin. Black Quinoa Extract: a superfood rich in amino acids, vitamins and minerals to nourish the skin. Pullulan: provides a firming effect for a smoother appearance.”

I have used almost an entire bottle of this serum and feel that it has been really good for my skin.

Although I was wary of some of the ingredients since EWG considers them to be potentially problematic, I have not had any problems at all in terms of this product (or the other products from The Outset) irritating my skin.

I also like the fact that the product is unscented and comes in a simple glass bottle with a pump.

Although this is not a low-priced serum, I think that it is a good value for the quality of the product provided and believe that I will purchase it again in the future.

True Botanicals Chebula Active Serum – $90

Overall Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Performance Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Ingredients Rating: 5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

Lisa Irritation Level: Very Mild

Processed Fragrance: None

Fermented Ingredients: None

The True Botanicals website describes this product as, “A hydrating anti-aging serum that helps fight visible signs of aging while supporting your skin barrier. Chebula, an ayurvedic fruit and one of the most bioactive and powerful antioxidants in nature, helps to target five signs of aging: minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, visibly even skin tone, smooth roughness, give the look of firmer and brighter skin. Chebula is known as one of the most bioactive, photostable, broad spectrum, cascading antioxidants with an ORAC score higher than Acai. Skin is left hydrated, glowy, and more youthful-looking. Plus, it’s hypoallergenic, non-comedogenic and pregnancy-safe.”

More than other serums that I have tried, this one leaves a rather thick and tacky surface on the skin. Some of this is likely due to the hyaluronic acid in the product, but perhaps the chebula adds to the effect.

I have a full bottle of this serum but have only used it on my face a couple of times since (like the True Botanicals facial oil that I also tried) it feels slightly irritating to my delicate facial skin.

I see that the product includes small amounts of what Drunk Elephant would call “drying alcohols” (part of that company’s “Suspicious Six”) and so perhaps those two ingredients (phenyl alcohol and alcohol) are causing mild issues for me.

It also could be that my skin does not do especially well with one or more of the other botanicals in the product.

Although I do not see any essential oils listed per se, the floral smell of the product (apparently from the “neroli flower distillate”) is quite strong.

Recently I have been using the product on my hands before bedtime and feel that it has had an almost immediate positive effect in terms of making the skin on them look plumper and younger.

My hands seem to tolerate this product fine, without experiencing any irritation from it.

While having nice-looking hands is important to me, I don’t know that I would rebuy this product to use for this purpose after I finish off this bottle. Maybe I can find another product that works just as well but is not quite so expensive.

I do think that this serum may be effective with regard to supporting the skin barrier for skin is not too sensitive to tolerate it, though.

True Botanicals Phyto-Retinol Vitamin A Booster – $120

♣ Living Clean Superstar

Overall Rating: 5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

Performance Rating: 5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

Ingredients Rating: 5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

The True Botanicals website states about this product, “Our clinically proven Phyto-Retinol Vitamin A Booster harnesses the innate intelligence of your skin to deliver powerful anti-aging benefits, without the sensitizing side effects that can result from synthetic retinoids like redness, irritation or peeling. This plant-based retinol alternative fights signs of aging including wrinkles, dark spots, and uneven skin tone to deliver your most youthful-looking glow. It’s certified microbiome-friendly, non-irritating and non-photosensitizing, so it can be used during the day and alongside other products that you typically have to avoid while using synthetic retinol, such as Vitamin C and exfoliators! These perfectly dosed vegan capsules are also hypoallergenic and pregnancy safe. 98% of users experienced no irritation or sensitivity when using this product. More than 90% of subjects said this was a great replacement to a traditional retinol product. The longer you use it, the greater the results. 88% said their skin looked firmer and more plump after 6 weeks of use.”

Although I feel that (at least for the time being) conventional prescription retinol does not seem like a good idea for my skin, I decided to give this product a try.

The main active ingredients are stated as being carrot root extract, buriti fruit oil, and amaranth.

The product comes in small gel capsules that are twisted open just before use. The liquid inside is a bright reddish orange with the potential of staining clothing or bedding.

I’ve used several capsules so far and don’t feel that the product has been at all irritating to my skin.

So far, I’ve liked the product insofar as it seems to have a mildly positive effect on my skin without irritating it.

I’m thinking that eventually I would like to do a controlled trial with the rest of the product over the period of a month, to see if it seems to make a noticeable difference that would make it worth the high cost.

Trash Can

Chanel No. 1 de Chanel Revitalizing Serum ($120): I tried a small sample of this new product (released in early 2022) and found that it was mildly irritating to my skin. In general, I think that it is unfortunate that although the product is stated as containing 97% natural ingredients, Chanel felt it necessary to put unspecified “fragrance” in it. Chanel responded to my query by stating that both synthetic and natural fragrance ingredients were used in it. Since the eye cream from this line (which I liked and was able to tolerate) does not include fragrance, I wonder if the serum also might have become a favorite of mine if Chanel had managed to restrain themselves in terms of allowing the product to be unscented. EWG gives the product a 5 (yellow), flagging as possibly problematic the fragrance (8), chlorphenesin (3), and lactic acid (4).
