Eye Shadows (Powder)
Description
November 1, 2022
By Lisa Petrison
Just over the past year or two, a number of companies have released new cleaner powder eyeshadow formulas that seem to me a whole lot better than the vast majority of those that were available in the past.
Most of these new products seem much easier to apply as well as less likely to emphasize the wrinkles and other textural issues of the skin in my eye area.
Although I still don’t use eyeshadow every day, I have been feeling increasingly that spending a few seconds putting some on can be pretty effective in terms of helping my eyes to look less puffy and more awake.
I have found that using taupe or other moderately dark shadow – carrying it well above the natural crease – seems to be especially enhancing to my own maturing eyes.
I’m not a fan of the theory that mature women should not wear shimmery eyeshadows and often use those kinds of shades on my own eyes.
I feel that having a good base on my eyelid is very important in getting my eyeshadow to look nice and wear well, with products discussed on the Eyelid Primers page of this website.
In addition, I’ve found having a set of good brushes to be indispensible in creating successful powder eyeshadow looks. I’ve especially liked the BK Beauty Angie Hot & Flashy Brush Set ($130), which is specifically designed for mature women.
One thing that I have personally found especially helpful is watching videos from certain YouTubers focusing on how older women can apply eyeshadows in an optimal way for them.
Some of my favorite YouTube channels that often deal with this topic include Dominique Sachse, Hot & Flashy, Lisa Eldridge and Lisa J.
Note that while I often use two or three colors of shadows on my eyes, I mostly have stayed with more neutral shades and don’t feel all that qualified to comment on the “color stories” (combinations of colors) provided in larger eyeshadow palettes.
My comments here instead focus mostly on the formulas of the products, in terms of how they have performed for me as well as the ingredients used.

The description of this product reads, “Our pressed eye shadows are colored with vibrant, vitamin-rich fruit pigments and natural mineral shimmer for gorgeous, long-lasting color payoff.”
I have the Fruit Pigmented Rose Gold Palette ($55) from 100% Pure and therefore have had a chance to try three of their eyeshadows shades (as well as two other powder products that also could be used on the eyes).
As has been my experience with almost all the 100% Pure makeup products that I have tried, I have found the formula of the product to be very nice but the colors to not work very well for me.
While fruit pigments may be cleaner than either minerals or synethics, for the most part the resulting colors that I have seen so far have not been very appealing to me (or perhaps just are so unfamiliar that my eyes are reading them as unappealing).
It certainly is true that these products feel clean to me and that they have a clean ingredient list.
They also do go on quite smoothly and wear fairly well.
Maybe if someday I could make my way to a 100% Pure store, I would find some colors that I actually like.

The description of this product reads, “A creamy mineral eyeshadow that delivers buildable color in a range of shades and finishes. Color builds from sheer to full. Creamy, velvety smooth, blendable texture. Vibrant, stay-true color. Finishes range from soft and luminous to high-impact metallic. Shadows can be applied wet or dry for customized intensity.”
These loose eyeshadows from Bare Minerals are available in many different colors and have a quite clean formula.
I tried the popular Nude Beach (“light warm sand”).
I thought that the color looked nice on me but that the loose formula made it somewhat difficult to apply.
Possibly with some effort I could master the technique of using them and they would be easier to use, though.

The description of the Bare Minerals Mineralist Sunlit Eyeshadow Palette reads, “Summon the sunlight with this talc-free, vegan eyeshadow palette featuring 6 richly pigmented, ultra-blendable sunwarmed bronze and copper shades in a range of finishes. Six warm bronze, copper and golden tones create endless looks. Two velvety mattes and 4 luminous satins. Delivers all-day, crease-proof wear. Creamy textures easily build, blend and layer. Cold-pressed botanicals help to nourish and visibly smooth skin.”
Bare Minerals sells several different six-shadow palettes, all of them appearing to be designed to create a fairly understated rather than overly dramatic look.
I tried the Sunlit palette, which leans toward warm tones and contains a pretty selection of colors.
Despite containing some artificial coloring agents, the formula seemed to work okay on my eyes without noticeably irritating them.
On the downside, I feel that this formula feels overly hard and stiff, meaning that it is hard to pick up much product on the brush.
I also feel like I have had to work harder than with some products to create a look that is attractive on me.

The description of this product reads, “Our easy-to-blend, long-lasting eyeshadow trios resist creasing, fading and smudging for all-day wear. Made with Bamboo, Honey and Vitamin E, this 100% natural eye makeup nourishes skin with just the right amount of beautiful pigment.”
I have tried two of these three-shadow palettes, in the Shimmering Nudes and Blooming Desert versions.
I like the formula of these shadows. They are easy to pick up on the brush or even a finger and are applied to my eyes easily and smoothly.
The ingredient list is one of the cleanest that I have seen for any shadow, and I don’t feel that my eyes have been irritated by my using this shadow.
At least in the palettes that I have tried, the three colors work together to create what I think is an easy and attractive look.
Especially considering the reasonable price, I would consider buying more of these palettes if I felt that the colors would suit me.

The description of this product reads, “Your signature shade, three ways. A refillable monochromatic eyshadow trio in three essential finishes. The three buildable finishes – matte, satin and metallic – offer a range of intensity and can be used alone or together for monochromatic dimension. Matte is a rich, smooth and versatile option; satin has a soft, delicate sheen; and metallic has a hint of sparkle for a dreamy, shimmery effect. Choose from an edited wardrobe of 10 essential shades—inspired by colors found in nature (elements of our gardens and backyards that we wish we could wear)—that are vegan and formulated without talc, with minimal fallout and creasing after you apply.”
This is an unusual eyeshadow palette in that it gives the user three versions of the exact same color, except in different finishes (matte, slightly shimmery, and a little more shimmery).
It therefore seems more suitable for people who are looking for an understated “one-and-done” eyeshadow look, rather than for those who want to use their eyeshadow to create a lot of drama or as an outlet for artistic expression.
Ten different options are currently available. I decided to try Prairie (“rich olive”), which is an unusual shade that I think looks very nice on my brown eyes.
I found the formulas to go on nicely and to not be too bad in terms of emphasizing the texture of my eyelids.
The ingredient list looks pretty clean to me, and I have not noticed any problems with this product irritating my eyes at all.
Silicones are included in the matte version only.
The metal compact is refillable and includes what I have found to be an encouraging comment written on the mirror (“You look good”).
Whether many people find the “monochrome” concept to be useful, I don’t know.
I do like this eyeshadow in terms of the performance and how it looks on me, and am appreciative of the fact that the whole palette is competitively priced compared to single shadows from brands that seem to me to have similar quality.
I might even purchase another shade at some point.

Nutrient dense formula that delivers beautiful color from plants and natural sources. Infused with argan oil and vitamins and tea extracts to benefit the skin. Vegan, Healthy and All Natural.”
These eyeshadows do not include any synthetic ingredients and are free of substances that EWG considers to be problematic.
The product is available in a variety of single colors as well as in a five-shade palette (called New York Nights).
I tried the color Charming (radiant beige with shimmer finish) and felt that it worked pretty well for me.
While it didn’t seem to apply as easily as some other eye shadows such as the Jane Iredale ones, I thought that it looked pretty on me and held up fairly well.
It does seem like a clean product to me and did not cause any irritation.
The main issue that I had was that it was difficult for me to decide which shades might be best for me from looking at the colors online.
I would appreciate some additional photographs or swatch videos.

The description of this product reads, “Serve endless looks with this pigment-rich eye shadow palette starring 10 velvety shades in a range of mattes, shimmers, and satins. Effortlessly create color gradients and perfectly smokey looks with blendable hues.”
The most noticeable attribute of this palette for me was that there was a substantial amount of fallout, with dustings of different color powders drifting around every time that I have used it.
Although I am not an expert in gauging the use of different palettes for people with different skin tones, this palette seems to me to consist almost solely of shades that are on the warm brown side.
I am not sure that people with cooler skin or who like to use other colors on their eyes will be very happy with this palette, therefore.
I do like warm brown tones and was attracted to the mix of shimmers and mattes in this palette.
Still, I feel like I have had a bit of problem getting a really attractive look from this product and haven’t wanted to use it very much.
The ingredient list does look clean to me, and I don’t feel that it has caused any irritation to my eyes.

The description of the Jane Iredale palettes and trios reads, “Complementary shadows for nuanced looks. Finely milled mineral pigments for richer, truer color. Soft, buttery texture for smooth application & easy blending. Long-lasting, creamy formula for color that won’t crease or fade. Nourishing natural ingredients moisturize and soften for a visibly smooth appearance. Gentle & safe for sensitive eyes. No Talc.”
Jane Iredale released an entirely reformulated line of their powder eyeshadows in 2022.
Although I didn’t like the old eyeshadows at all, I think the new ones are really terrific (to the point that they have become my favorite powder shadows).
I have found the formula of the new shadows to be soft and easy to apply, blending easily into an attractive look.
The shadows are available in a variety of singles ($24), trios ($32) and 6-color palettes ($48). They all are pretty compact in size compared to many other eyeshadow palettes on the market.
I feel that both the trios and the palettes have very nice color selections and that they have made it easy for me to use a few colors together to create attractive looks.
The shimmer shades are pretty enough to work on their own as “one-and-done” shadows as well, in my opinion.
I have the Solar Flare palette and the Harmony triple, and I really like both of these.
I have been feeling tempted to buy additional products since many of the other colors look like they have potential as well.

Jones Road currently offers 15 shades of powder eyeshadows, about half shimmery and half matte.
They are only available as single shadows rather than in palettes.
Based on the photos shared by Jones Road, they seem to mostly be promoting the use of one or maybe two of the shadow colors at a time.
I tried the color Patina, which is a dark brown shimmer, and have really enjoyed using it.
The product picks up and blends really easily and looks very nice on my eyes.
It is one of my favorite powder eyeshadows in terms of the formula.
I would be interested in trying another shade or perhaps a little palette (if they ever offer one).

The description of this product reads, “Rich colour, professional, iconic. Behold the power of pigment. Elevate your eyes with a streak of rich, highly pigmented pressed powder. This saturated shadow formula stays on all day long with non-creasing, eight-hour wear. The result: potent colour payoff that applies evenly, blends well and can be used wet or dry. Available in a kaleidoscope of colours, textures and finishes.”
MAC eyeshadows are long-time favorites of many makeup artists and savvy consumers, and while I had not used them for many years, they were favorites of mine about 20 years ago.
I therefore decided to purchase a few shades to see how they compared to some of the other products that I was trying out.
The main concern with regard to MAC eyeshadows is that they contain talc.
To my understanding, asbestos is primarily problematic due to the fact that it can cause cancer if it is breathed into the lungs. There also was one case where a case of ovarian cancer was found in a court case to have been caused by the frequent use of baby powder in the groin area.
I definitely would not want to use loose baby powder or loose setting powder that might be contaminated with asbestos.
However, I feel slightly less concerned with regard to eyeshadows, since a minimal amount of product is used and the likelihood that I will be breathing in a substantial amount of it seems low.
Apart from the use of the talc, MAC uses phenoxyethanol (a preservative) and some various artificial colors in its shadows.
I tried several different shades of MAC eyeshadows and was generally impressed with how they performed.
Being able to choose from many different shades to create a Custom Palette with four shadows ($41) was especially appealing to me and worked out really well.
Several of the shades that I have tried – including Woodwinked, All That Glitters and Amber Lights – have worked especially well as both “one-and-done” and blended shadows.
The less shimmery shades – Texture, Marsh and Ricepaper – also have worked well for me.
I feel like I especially like MAC eyeshadows because many of their shades seem to have a muted “muckiness” about them that I find to be interesting and that seems to work well with my low-contrast complexion.
While I like the formula, I feel that there are several recently released eyeshadows that do not include talc – including the ones from ATHR, Jane Iredale, MOB Beauty and Jones Road – that have performed just as well or better for me in terms of factors such as ease of application and long-lastingness.
I have not found that the MAC eyeshadows have irritated my eyes at all.
I still feel uncomfortable suggesting them to others due to the talc in them.

The description of this product reads, “Three shades that play well together. Mineral Fusion Eye Shadow Trios take all the guesswork out of your color game, with richly pigmented coordinated hues that can be mixed & matched to perfect your look. Even better: a nourishing mix of aloe, white tea, and sea kelp. show the delicate skin around your eyes some love.”
I tried the trio Stunning (various shades of brown) in this product line.
Compared to many of the eyeshadows that I have tried recently, I found these shadows difficult to use due to their being on the hard side.
I had substantial problems getting a nice look from the palette, even though in theory the shades are ones that should look good on me.
I did not find it to be irritating to my eyes, though.
More recently, Mineral Fusion introduced a group of refillable eyeshadow palettes with a different ingredient list.
I have not tried one of those yet but am wondering if the formula might be better than with these.
I would like to give them a try to see.

The description of this product reads, “Pro-quality payoff, smooth, non-drying texture. Rich buttery pigments blend easily with no fall out. We load our eyeshadows with a high, 35% pigment load for max payoff. Amino acid coated pigments give our formula an application that is easy to blend with no fall out and a non-drying, long wear finish. Chamomile extract calms your skin. Plus, natural antioxidants like Vitamin C and E strengthen and protect your skin’s barrier. Ingredients are earth-first: bio-degradable, ethically sourced, cruelty-free and vegan. Long wearing, free of talc, clean, and vegan.”
MOB offers a wide variety of powder eyeshadow colors, which can be purchased as singles or used to build a palette with up to 12 shades.
They thus are similar to concept of the MAC eyeshadows, which perhaps should not be a big surprise since MOB was founded by two of the original founders of MAC, Victor Casale and Frank Toskan.
The MOB eyeshadows do not use talc and include somewhat fewer artificial colors, however.
I tried two shades of the MOB eyeshadows – M48 (“shimmering olive”) and M44 (“lilac taupe sheen”).
I have found the colors to be very pretty and the products to be easy to use to create a nice look.
I have not found that the shadows caused any irritation to my eyes.
So far, all the MOB Beauty products that I have tried have worked well for me despite the presence of artificial colorants in many of them.
I would be interested in trying more shades of these eyeshadows.

The description of this product reads, “This palette is a first-of-its-kind formula that illuminates the eyes with a striking multi-dimensional glassy effect that is fool-proof, even if you have the fear of eyeshadow. These versatile shades were meticulously designed to wear alone or seamlessly blend, layer and mix to create multiple looks.Upon first use, swirl your fingertip in a circular motion on each eyeshadow shade. Don’t be afraid to use firm pressure. This will activate our Lid Illumes for optimal color payoff. For more pigment, apply directly to your eyelid using your fingertip. For a diffused wash of color, use our Everything Eye Brush. Be sure to use firm pressure. Push, swipe, swirl, layer, and have fun. Mix and match the colors, and let your creativity or simplicity shine!”
This company is currently offering six different eyeshadow palettes, with each one consisting of four different chunky/shimmery shades.
The shadows are said to be in the grey area between being powder and cream products.
All the shades have enough texture and shimmer that they work well as “one-and-done” shades as well as part of multi-color looks.
I have the 75 Degrees Warm palette and have found it very easy to use.
The eye shadows go on and blend really easily, and all four shades are extremely pretty.
I have not found the product to have irritated my eyes at all, and the shadows seem to have held up well on my eyes.
I feel that this is a really unusual and special eyeshadow palette, to the point that I feel that it could be worthwhile to try another one.
However, I have heard that the palettes that have been released since the company’s founder stepped down as CEO are substantially different than this one and much more like ordinary eyeshadow palettes.
I therefore would be more inclined to buy one of the other original palettes, which to my understanding are the 11:11 and the 52 Degrees Cool ones.

The description of this product reads, “Play up your eyes with a chic, modern take on neutral. This essential vegan eyeshadow palette contains five versatile shades—from luminous natural tones to deeper matte hues. With blendable powder shadows, it’s perfect for creating eye-catching looks with intense color payoff, whether you want a subtle wash of color or to layer and play for more drama. This plant-powered formula is infused with Grapeseed Oil and Jojoba Seed Oil, giving each shade a dreamy, velvety texture with all-day staying power.”
This palette is currently offered in four different versions, each containing five shades of shadow.
I tried the Sepia palette, which contains a variety of colors that I felt were somewhat unusual and suited to my coloring (though without any lighter highlighting shades).
I am not crazy about the formula, since I feel that the shadows are on the hard side and a rather difficult to apply.
I do think that the colors are nice, working as both “one-and-done” shadows as well as for use in creating more complex looks.
I feel that the formula is pretty clean and have not have any problems with it irritating my eyes.

Although the skincare and makeup sections have a particular focus on products appropriate for women who are in their 40’s or beyond, the information provided may be useful for other people as well.
The products are curated by Lisa Petrison, who has been focused on helping people to improve their health by avoiding toxicity since 2008 and who heads the Paradigm Change organization.
Her Living Clean in a Dirty World blog site discusses a variety of topics of relevance to those who are working to pursue a more natural lifestyle with less exposure to harmful toxicity.
Lisa is the author of several books, including A Beginner’s Guide to Mold Avoidance (co-written with Erik Johnson).
She also runs the Paradigm Change website (focusing on issues related to toxic mold illness) and the Mold Avoiders Facebook group (designed for the discussion of all topics of interest to those pursuing the mold avoidance approach described in the “Beginner’s Guide” book).
Lisa was born in August 1964 and has yet to try cosmetic surgery, Botox or other cosmetic treatments requiring interactions with a physician, or beauty products containing retinoids.

A Note From Lisa
Products that I have tried or researched and that I have not found to be acceptable from a toxicity standpoint have been omitted entirely from the discussions on this website.
However, since a goal of this project is to introduce people to a range of options in terms of price and functionality, some products discussed on this site include ingredients that may not be appropriate for everyone.
It’s my hope that all individuals making their way to this site will find at least a few options from each product category that meet all of their own needs and wants from a variety of perspectives.
The vast majority of cosmetics marketers now offer affiliate programs in which Internet content creators may earn commissions if people who are referred to the companies’ sites by clicking on links end up making purchases.
