The serums listed here focus on providing hydration in the form of ingredients such as hyaluronic acid or squalane.
Many also include additional nourishing ingredients such as ceramides or niacinamide.
Most can be appropriately used by people with any kind of skin type, including those with oily skin and acne.
The hydrating serums that I have looked at tend to have ingredient lists that – at least according to EWG standards – seem to be pretty clean.
Because most of these serums do not contain substantial amounts of oil, most people may find it useful to use some kind of additional moisturizng product (such as a cream moisturizer or a face oil) on top of them.
Some hydrating serums include additional ingredients that are supposed to help to minimize the signs of aging, and those are discussed on the Anti-Aging Serums page of this website.
The products listed on the Day Creams pages of this website all have substantial amounts of hydrators in them as well.
Because my own skin is very dry and is starting to experience issues associated with aging, I have tended to focus more on those other kinds of products and less on the hydrating serums so far.
I have used a few hydrating serums and hope to try out more in the future, though.

Aveda Botanical Kinetics Intense Hydrator – $54
Living Clean Rating: 7 out of 10
Performance Rating:
(3 / 5)
Ingredients Rating:
(4 / 5)
Processed Fragrance: Natural fragrance, Limonene, Geraniol, Citonellol, Linalool, Hydroxycitronellal
The description of this product on the Aveda website reads, “Keep hydrated for dewy supple skin. This lightweight, fast-absorbing serum, powered by a fusion of cactus fruit stem cells and plant-derived hyaluronic acid, instantly restores skin’s moisture, minimizes the appearance of fine dry lines, and restores skin’s protective lipid barrier to help maintain moisture throughout the day.”
This product contains several different kinds of natural fragrance and has a noticeable scent. I don’t personally feel that a serum like this needs to be scented, but at least this one at least does have natural rather than synthetic fragrance.
It also contains an unnecessary green coloring agent.
I tried a small sample of this product. I didn’t find that it irritated my skin, but also didn’t feel inclined to consider buying a larger bottle.

Beautycounter Countermatch Intense Moisture Serum – $54
Performance Rating: Not Yet Rated
Ingredients Rating:

The description of this product on the Beautycounter website reads, “Packed with two forms of hyaluronic acid, plus vitamins C and E, this intensely moisturizing serum, without mineral oil or synthetic fragrance, delivers a boost of lasting hydration and antioxidant protection. With continued use, skin will feel firmer and look brighter with a more even tone. Helps minimize the appearance of fine lines. Lightweight, fluid texture offers easy layering.”
The product does contain (as Drunk Elephant would put it) a “drying alcohol,” but it is toward the bottom of the ingredient list and thus may not be playing much of a role in the product.
The product also includes a small amount of salicylic acid, which makes me think that it is primarily intended for people with acne issues.
That has made me hesitant to buy this product since it does not seem to be specifically intended for me.
However, I have used a number of other Beautycounter Countermatch products, all of which include hydrators like hyaluronic acid. I have been happy with all of them (and actually with almost all of Beautycounter’s skincare products).
My hope is that this is a good product too, therefore.

♣ Living Clean Superstar
Living Clean Rating: 9 out of 10
Performance Rating:
(5 / 5)
Ingredients Rating:
(4 / 5)

The Drunk Elephant website description of this product reads, “This ultra-hydrating serum replenishes the complexion and improves the look of skin tone and texture. Formulated with pro-vitamin B5 and pineapple ceramide, B-Hydra delivers steady hydration throughout the day, leaving the skin looking healthy and more illuminated. Blended with a unique lentil-apple-and-watermelon complex, B-Hydra helps diminish drabness, dryness, and the appearance of fine lines. Your complexion will appear brighter and more youthful upon every application. Our formulations are biocompatible, which means they’re able to easily penetrate your skin without disrupting its balance. Formulated with molecular size in mind, this lightweight, hard-hitting serum has a pH of 5.7 and is ideal for all skin.”
I had a good experience with a small bottle of this product. It felt hydrating to my face without appearing to annoy my skin.
Considering that the full-size product comes in a larger bottle than some of its competitors, the price per ounce is not out of line.
Although I am not sure that I ever will buy this product again, I like it enough that I likely would eventually use it up if I happened to have a bottle sitting around.

Honest Stay Hydrated Hyaluronic Acid +NMF Serum – $30
♥ Lisa’s Choice
♣ Living Clean Superstar
Living Clean Rating: 10 out of 10
Performance Rating:
(5 / 5)
Ingredients Rating:
(5 / 5)
Processed Fragrance: None
This product was introduced in early 2022. It seems to me similar in concept and ingredients to the popular Honest Hydrogel Cream, but in a more concentrated serum form.
The copy on the Honest website reads, “This serum is designed to draw + hold moisture in the skin thanks to 3 types of hyaluronic acid with different molecular weights for multi-depth hydration. Formulated with kiwi seed oil for its natural sources of essential fatty acids to help support the skin barrier, rambutan peel extract to provide extra hydration, and Natural Moisturizing Factors (NMF) to help the outer layer of the skin stay hydrated. Designed to reduce the appearance of fine lines through hydration, our skin-quenching serum provides plumping moisture to skin and brings cushiony, bouncy skin vibes!”
Like the Honest Hydrogel cream, this serum includes hydrolyzed sodium hyaluronate. This is a particularly small particle that supposedly works better due to deeper penetration of the skin, but that some people also say has the potential of being irritating to the skin.
I have not found either the Honest Hydrogel cream or this serum to be irritating to my skin at all, though.
In general, I think the ingredient list for this product looks quite good to me.
The one thing that I do see, though, is that this product seems to contain fewer preservatives than some of the competitive products.
I feel that the bottle that I purchased feels fine to me even after several months, but I still would suggest buying it from somewhere that would take it back if it feels problematic when it is opened and then using it up fairly quickly.
I probably will buy this again unless I find another product that I like better.

Ingredients Rating:

The description of this product reads, “Compensates for the natural decrease in hyaluronic acid in the skin, for hydrated, plump and smoother skin. 94% naturally-derived. Hyaluronic acid is a molecule naturally synthesized by the skin, the role of which is to maintain the hydration of the skin and preserve its smooth and plump appearance. After 25, our natural production of hyaluronic acid decreases, and the cells ensuring the protection of the skin are renewed less quickly. The barrier function of the skin gradually deteriorates and the skin becomes dehydrated more quickly: fine lines can form. There are two types of hyaluronic acid. The first has a high molecular weight, meaning it remains on the surface of the epidermis, creating a protective film to keep water in the skin cells. The second has low molecular weight and has a much smaller molecular size so that it can penetrate much deeper into the skin and stimulate the body’s natural production of hyaluronic acid. Combined these two types of hyaluronic acid offer the skin instant and effective hydration that retains its moisture throughout the day. With daily use hyaluronic acid restores moisture to the skin, reduces the appearance of fine lines and creates a complexion that’s noticeably more supple, plump and toned.”
The product also includes Pro Vitamin B5 (“stimulates the regeneration of dermal and epidermal cells, helping the skin retain more moisture and maintain its softness”) and biosourced Aquaxyl (“increases the natural production of hyaluronic acid in the skin’s keratinocytes and fibroblasts”).
I have yet to try this product but hope to do so soon.

Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Niacinamide Dew Drops ($34): This product is rated as Clean at Sephora and seems fairly popular. A Note From Lisa
Products that I have tried or researched and that I have not found to be acceptable from a toxicity standpoint have been omitted entirely from the discussions on this website.
However, since a goal of this project is to introduce people to a range of options in terms of price and functionality, some products discussed on this site include ingredients that may not be appropriate for everyone.
It’s my hope that all individuals making their way to this site will find at least a few options from each product category that meet all of their own needs and wants from a variety of perspectives.
The vast majority of cosmetics marketers now offer affiliate programs in which Internet content creators may earn commissions if people who are referred to the companies’ sites by clicking on links end up making purchases.
