Facial Oils
Description
November 1, 2022
By Lisa Petrison
Facial oils tend to be much cleaner than cream moisturizers, since they do not require the preservatiaves, stabilizers or other problematic ingredients that are used to prevent quick spoilage in creams.
In terms of application, oils can be applied directly to cleansed skin or mixed with a cream moisturizer before being applied.
Combining them in the palm with a few sprays of hydrosol and then spreading the mixture over the face and neck is another method that has worked for me.
One of my favorite ways to use facial oil is to mix it in my palm with a hydrating serum – such as Honest Stay Hydrated Hyaluronic Acid + NMF Serum ($30) – before applying the creamy concoction to my face.
I feel that this kind of approach gives my skin the mixture of different types of moisture (oils and hydrators) that it needs to feel its best, but at a much lower cost for the quality than I ever have found in even the best pre-made creams.
The facial oils on this page are free of strongly fragranced ingredients such as essential oils, highly processed botanicals (such as limonene or geraniol), and mystery substances (natural or synthetic) listed as “fragrance.”
Although my skin does okay with some of the milder essential oils, it seems to be happiest when the products that I am using do not contain any highly processed scented ingredients at all.
A few of the products on this page do contain botanical extracts, which may contribute a mild floral or herbal scent.
One downside of unscented oils is that they may have the tendency to spoil more quickly than scented oils since botanical fragrances can serve as preservatives.
Products containing more fragile oils – such as chia seed or sunflower seed – may be especially likely to go rancid quickly.
I therefore suggest making an effort to use these oils up quickly and to store them in the refrigerator if this is not possible.
In addition, I suspect that some of these products can sit in unrefrigerated warehouses for long enough that they end up going bad before even reaching the consumer.
I therefore suggest only purchasing products that will be used immediately and then being prepared to return them if they do not seem reasonably fresh.

The description of this product on the Annmarie website states, “This calming and soothing formula reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles without irritating sensitive skin. Omega-rich oils — sacha inchi and camellia seed — nourish and revitalize skin. Though formulated for sensitive skin, this oil is moisturizing enough for dry skin as well. No essential oils are added, making it ideal for anyone sensitive to scented products.”
This product from Annmarie is a basic facial oil that contains a variety of high-quality oils that moisturize the face, but without any essential oils that could be irritating to some people.
I tried some of this product and it seemed to do a good job of moisturizing my skin, without the inclusion of any kind of fragrances that could cause some people to react.
For those who are concerned about the many different botanicals in the Annmarie Anti-Aging Oil (which I have been using pretty regularly), this product could be a reasonable substitute.

According to the Birkenstock website, “This soothing treatment calms the appearance of skin redness and creates a more even-looking complexion with nourishing buriti oil and antioxidant turmeric oil. Boswellia extract works with cork oak to support healthy barrier function so the skin is better protected against environmental factors like free radicals and pollutants.”
Birkenstock skincare products all use the unusual ingredient of cork oil, which has been reported in some peer-reviewed papers as having the ability to reduce wrinkles.
Of the several Birkenstock skincare products that I have tried, I have liked this oil product by far the most.
It is stated as being particularly appropriate for sensitive skin and (unlike most of the other Birkenstock skincare products) contains only 100% natural ingredients.
Even though I was already using a wide variety of expensive and fairly clean skincare products, I feel that adding just a couple of drops of this oil to my skincare routine per day has made a real difference in my skin.
My skin seems less irritable since I started using this product, in addition to looking more healthy and glowing.
Unfortunately, I now am really afraid that they are going to stop making the product (since most of the other Birkenstock skincare products have already disappeared from the company website and Nordstrom has stopped carrying the entire line).
I purchased an extra bottle but like this oil so much that I feel that I probably should buy a few more and then store them in the refrigerator until I need them.
I think that this is a great product and wish that more people would discover it before it is too late.

The description of this product on the Bybi website reads, “Strawberry Booster hydrating serum is 100% cold-pressed strawberry seed oil that’s great for dry, flaky, or irritated skin. A day or night booster to supplement your existing skincare products, it absorbs quickly to boost moisture levels and soften sensitive skin.”
I have found this to be a gentle, effective oil that feels good on my skin and that seems to have a positive effect.
The affordable price makes it a good addition to my skincare when used on its own or in combination with other face oils.
The oil has a dark green color with a slightly fruity natural smell that I have found to be appealing.
The company makes some additional “booster” oils (including a blueberry one and a bakuchiol one) that I am interested in trying.

The description of this product on the Cocokind website reads, “This restorative daily moisturizer helps smooth and soften skin while also reducing the look of dark spots and brightening to reveal a more even-looking complexion.”
This fairly thick oil contains just three ingredients – organic coconut oil, organic avocado oil, and organic rosa canina oil.
It has a greenish-gold color from the avocado oil and a mild, fresh, nutty-type scent from the rosa canina oil (which is pressed from rose hip seeds).
The rosa canina oil contains a substantial amount of Vitamin C and therefore may be helpful for brightening the skin.
My dog likes to lick this oil off my skin, which (considering how picky he tends to be) suggests to me that the ingredients must be of good quality.
While I like all three of the ingredients in this product, I am more inclined to use them on my body or my lips than on my delicate facial skin.
Although my face did okay with this product, there are many other oils that I like better on it and so I have not used much of it for that purpose.
I’ve gotten some good use from this product by combining it with lighter lotions and using the mixture on my body, though.
The pump container makes it especially convenient to use for that purpose.

The description of this product on the Cocokind website states, “This replenishing facial oil leaves skin soothed, hydrated, and supple-looking. Nourishes and restores skin’s healthy appearance with omega-3 fatty acids. Provides rich hydration with a velvety feel.”
This reasonably priced product from Cocokind consists of pure organic chia seed oil.
The oil is especially rich in omega-3’s, which are said to help to hydrate the skin and to support its natural barrier function.
Cocokind suggests mixing a few drops of the oil with a hydrosol such as the company’s Rosewater Toner before applying to the skin for faster absorption.
I think that especially for people who have very sensitive skin that may be annoyed by the essential oils or other botanicals present in most facial oils, this could be a good choice.
The downside that I see in this product, though, is that (like flaxseed oil) chia seed oil is especially delicate and has the potential to go rancid rapidly (which did happen to me with an opened bottle that I kept at room temperature for a few months).
Since the price of the product is reasonable, it could be worth purchasing it anyway and then making a bit of an effort to use it up quickly (which would not be too hard since it works well as a moisturizer on the body as well as the face).
Although the product gets mostly good reviews (except from some people with oily skin) on the Target site, I do see some comments that suggest that the oil has an odd smell. Since I don’t think that the product should have any noticeable smell if it is fresh, that does suggest to me that those people may have gotten a bottle that had gone off even before purchase.
Therefore, although I might buy the product directly from Cocokind again, I don’t think I would want to purchase it via Target or another retailer.

The description of this product on the Drunk Elephant website reads, “Our Virgin Marula Oil is like rehab for your skin. Rich in critical antioxidants and omegas 6 and 9, Marula nourishes and balances while restoring a youthful glow and remains in its purest form. Straight from the pip of the marula fruit, our pure, unrefined oil is virtually untouched by any chemical or fragrance, natural or synthetic. This super-absorbable oil will quickly sink in and diminish the look of fine lines and wrinkles. Appropriate for all skin, including the most sensitive. Our marula oil contains greater concentrations of polyphenols than dark chocolate or green or black teas, which means a powerful antioxidant defense against pollution and damaging environmental free radicals.”
This is a simple product containing only marula oil, which feels quite good on my skin.
The product does seem to have contributed to my skin quality when I have used it.
I think that especially for those who are sensitive to botanical as well as chemical ingredients, this could be a very good choice.
I also found it interesting that my very picky cockapoo likes this oil so much that he always wants to lick it off my hands when I use it (and will happily lick up several drops if I offer them to him).
Considering how many human-intended foods he rejects, that makes me think that the oil is healthful and high-quality.
It also seems to have stayed good for longer than the chia seed oil, anyway.

Some of the highest-quality oils found in expensive face oils are sold individually by various companies.
I have been very happy with the ones sold as “carrier oils” by Eden Botanicals, a company specializing in essential oils.
All of their carrier oils are organic and available in dark glass bottles.
I have tried quite a few of them and have found the quality to be excellent.
Some of my favorites for use on my face include plum kernel, pomegranate seed, raspberry seed, prickly pear seed, and marula.
The other carrier oils currently listed on the Eden Botanicals site are argan (which I like to use on my hair), baobab, black cumin, fractionated coconut, jojoba, moringa, rosehip, sandalwood nut, sea buckthorn, sunflower, and tamanu.
These can be used individually or mixed together. If essential oils are tolerated, these could be added as well.
The cost savings for buying these oils in bulk form through companies like Eden Botanicals may be substantial.
For instance, marula oil is currently available for $9 per ounce (compared to $68 for Drunk Elephant Marula Oil).
Plum kernel oil is $12 per ounce (compared to $72 for Le Prunier).
Eden Botanicals sells small samples (1 ml) of the oils for a nominal charge so that people can test them before committing to a larger purchase.
I have tried almost all the oils that they sell and would consider re-purchasing everything that I have tried.
Those who have had good experiences with these kinds of oils sold by other companies are asked to please share the information in the comments section.

The description of this product on the Evanhealy website reads, “Pomegranate Repair Serum is an extraordinary combination of fruit, seed and berry oils known for their revitalizing effect on skin. This unscented (other than the natural aroma of essential fatty acids), nutrient-rich therapeutic treatment adds powerful antioxidant benefits to skin, with a high polyphenol and conjugated fatty acid content. It offers a holistic solution for blemished, congested skin, mature and aging skin, dry, dehydrated, flaky, irritated, sun-damaged and sunburned skin. Pomegranate Repair Serum has exceptional moisturizing and nourishing properties. Its visible effect on mature and aging skin, hyperpigmented skin, dry and cracked skin, irritated, sun-damaged and sunburned skin is truly remarkable. Daily use increases vitality, elasticity, and suppleness while providing an elegant and silky feeling.”
Of the three Evanhealy facial oils that I have sampled, this is the only one that I felt worked well on my skin.
The product is described on the Evanhealy website as being especially appropriate for mature, blemished, dry and sensitive skin.
I think that this is a viable choice that I would consider using on a regular basis if I had not found a some other products that I like even better.

Powerful polyphenols and omega fatty acids 6 & 9 help protect the skin from damaging free radicals while pro-vitamin A & E help to heal and hydrate skin. Totally clean. No essential oils, parabens, sulfates, preservatives, added fragrance, chemicals.”
I really like the feeling of this oil on my face as well as the scent (which is very similar to that of almond oil).
I think that it is really good for my skin and that it has not caused me any irritation at all.
While I like this oil, I feel somewhat disinclined to pay this high of a price for it.
Typology used to offer a plum kernel oil for only $25 per ounce that felt pretty much the same to me.
Even though it is no longer available on the Typology website, I feel like I should be able to find a similar product from another company and plan to investigate that a bit.

Marie Veronique Barrier Lipid Complex – $95

♣ Living Clean Superstar

Performance Rating:

Ingredients Rating:
(5 / 5)

The description of this product reads, “Kristina Holey + Marie Veronique Barrier Lipid Complex is, in the best and most skin-soothing way, aggressive moisture. If you have dry, sensitive skin, and nothing seems to be working for you, this may very well end your search. Sure, it has some oddities. It’s chunky (no big deal, you just shake it up, but it’s probably the first time you’ve seen chunks in your face oil); it’s unscented (which means that it smells a bit aggressively like unscented oil, which dissipates); it’s a slightly indescribable oil/cream hybrid. But man, does it moisturize. Kristina and Marie developed this product in a very solution-oriented way, looking at the elements of the skin’s protective barrier layer and then figuring out how to give those elements back to the skin to help it heal itself. Its secret lies in its perfect ratios of cholesterol, ceramides, and essential fatty acids. The ceramides help maintain youthfully plump skin, while cholesterol — humanely sourced from sheep’s wool — delivers profound moisture, and fatty acids from a variety of oils help skin achieve balance. Thanks to the soothing, fragrance-free formula, all of this is accomplished without causing any irritation. Think of it as a next-generation balm for mature, dry, dehydrated skin that’s especially helpful during long flights or cold winters. Blend it with Barrier Restore Serum (or layer it on top) for skin barrier superpowers.”
This rather thick oil has the main ingredients of black raspberry seed oil, evening primrose oil, squalane and cranberry seed oil.
A representative from Marie Veronique responded to my question about the sourcing of the squalane as follows: “Our squalane is sourced from non-GMO sugarcane, sugar beets, or olives. In general, it is produced via fermentation. The material has been fully evaluated by our quality team prior to use in our products for both quality of material and function within our products. These vegetal sources allow us to utilize a material from a more sustainable source than an animal (shark) and allows use of a material that is suitable for vegans and vegetarians.”
I think that the fact that the source materials for this product are non-GMO (and therefore likely to be mostly free of glyphosate contamination) is somewhat reassuring to me and makes me more inclined to buy this face oil.
In general, the ingredients used in this product seem to be especially expensive and high quality, and that makes me feel better about paying the high price that is being charged.
Black raspberry seed oil in particular is an interesting ingredient to me since it is very high in antioxidants and is accepted as being a natural sunscreen (with an estimated SPF as high as 50). It also is said to be a natural source of Vitamin C and to be useful in counteracting sun damage and reducing wrinkles.
I tried a small bottle of this oil as part of the Kristina Holey + Marie Veronique Starter Kit.
I feel that my skin liked this oil even more than most of the others that I have tried and that using it on a regular basis could be a good thing for me.
Despite the very high price, I likely will buy a full bottle at some point (probably during the winter months) and give it a real try to see how much of a difference it makes for me.

The description of this product on the Ayla website reads, “Marie Veronique created this product specifically for our founder, Dara, who has super-sensitive skin. One might assume that a fragrance free, essential oil free, tocopherol free (and also, by the way, vegan, gluten free, and nut free) creation would be like the skincare equivalent of salt-free rice crackers, but no! This oil, thanks to Marie’s formulation magic, happens to be the most beautifully balanced, hydrating but non-greasy, calming, and all-around excellent moisturizer that Dara and the rest of our team, all of whom have different skin types, have ever used. So we decided to manufacture it in partnership with Marie Veronique to ensure that we could have an endless supply and you could enjoy it, too. This lightweight oil absorbs quickly yet provides deep, long-lasting, and satisfying hydration; thanks to its blend of light but nourishing oils, perfectly balanced omega fatty acids, and silky hyaluronic acid, Dara’s Oil leaves skin calm and glowing without an overly glossy sheen. Check out the details behind this powerhouse blend: you’ll find all-stars like chia, prickly pear, and evening primrose alongside exotics like cherry kernel, which is one of the secrets behind its how-did-they-do-that texture. Dara’s Oil is suitable for all skin types. While it can be used on the most delicate complexions, it’s an excellent way to give any skin a break from potential allergens and avoid sensitizing skin.”
This product is only available through the Ayla website and is designed for especially sensitive skin.
It is even more costly than the Marie Veronique Barrier Lipid Complex since the $77 price is for only a 1/2 ounce bottle rather than a 1 ounce bottle.
Although many of the ingredients are similar to the ones used in the Barrier Lipid Complex, this one has jojoba oil as the first ingredient.
It is a thinner oil and seems to disappear into the skin a little more readily than most other face oils that I have tried.
This product is about twice as expensive as Marie Veronique’s regular face oils, all of which contain scented ingredients that seem to have been a little annoying to my skin.
I get the feeling that this oil might be designed for younger skin that is less dry than mine, but it still feels good to me.
Although I like the product a lot, I probably won’t purchase it again because it is so costly and because I think the Barrier Lipid Complex seems more of the right match for my skin issues.

The description of this product reads, “Crow’s feet or smile lines are the small wrinkles and fine lines that form around the outer corners of the eyes. They develop naturally with age, as our skin begins to lose collagen and elastin. This serum is highly concentrated in Q10 to help reduce their appearance. The Q10 serum is suitable for all skin types and is particularly recommended for mature skin. Q10, also known as ubiquinone, is a naturally-occurring coenzyme in the body. In the skin, Q10’s job is to stimulate cell regeneration, prevent the breakdown of collagen – our skin’s scaffolding – and slow down its loss of elasticity. However, it depletes as we age, as well as due to factors like sun exposure. Q10 is most-commonly used as a powerful antioxidant. It’s gentle enough to apply to reactive areas like the thin, delicate skin around the eyes, unlike ingredients like retinol that can cause irritation. Known for its softening and nourishing prowess, macadamia oil soothes the skin and absorbs quickly without leaving the complexion greasy or overloaded.”
Although this oil is sold specifically for use in the eye area, I don’t think that there is any reason not to use it on the rest of the face as well if desired.
It is a thin, gentle, nice-feeling oil that seems to have an especially high viscosity and that absorbs easily into my skin.
I’m glad that there are not any added ingredients that could be irritating in this product.
I have liked using it so far and, though it is fairly expensive, would consider buying it again.

About This Website
The Living Clean in a Dirty World shopping website is designed to provide guidance to those seeking out products that are relatively low in toxicity and that provide generally positive user experiences.
Although the skincare and makeup sections have a particular focus on products appropriate for women who are in their 40’s or beyond, the information provided may be useful for other people as well.
The products are curated by Lisa Petrison, who has been focused on helping people to improve their health by avoiding toxicity since 2008 and who heads the Paradigm Change organization.
Her Living Clean in a Dirty World blog site discusses a variety of topics of relevance to those who are working to pursue a more natural lifestyle with less exposure to harmful toxicity.
Lisa is the author of several books, including A Beginner’s Guide to Mold Avoidance (co-written with Erik Johnson).
She also runs the Paradigm Change website (focusing on issues related to toxic mold illness) and the Mold Avoiders Facebook group (designed for the discussion of all topics of interest to those pursuing the mold avoidance approach described in the “Beginner’s Guide” book).
Lisa was born in August 1964 and has yet to try cosmetic surgery, Botox or other cosmetic treatments requiring interactions with a physician, or beauty products containing retinoids.
In her former life, Lisa worked as a business school professor, as a marketing consultant to a variety of large companies, and as a reporter covering the advertising industry.
She holds a Ph.D. in marketing and social psychology from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University as well as B.S./M.S. degrees from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern.
Lisa would like to extend a special note of appreciation to Ellen Kleiman-Redden for her help in trying out products and discussing issues related to this project.
She also would like to thank the many members of the Mold Avoiders community who have shared suggestions of products to be included here.
A Note From Lisa
Products that I have tried or researched and that I have not found to be acceptable from a toxicity standpoint have been omitted entirely from the discussions on this website.
However, since a goal of this project is to introduce people to a range of options in terms of price and functionality, some products discussed on this site include ingredients that may not be appropriate for everyone.
It’s my hope that all individuals making their way to this site will find at least a few options from each product category that meet all of their own needs and wants from a variety of perspectives.
The vast majority of cosmetics marketers now offer affiliate programs in which Internet content creators may earn commissions if people who are referred to the companies’ sites by clicking on links end up making purchases.
I participate in quite a few individual affiliate programs as well as in the Sovrn/Viglinks program (which automatically converts regular links into revenue-generating links).
Links on this page that may result in affiliate income may include – but are not necessarily limited to – those from the following companies: Amazon, Ayla, Birkenstock, Bybi, Cocokind, Credo, Drunk Elephant, Evanhealy, Josie Maran, Le Prunier, Marie Veronique, Nordstrom, Pharmaca, Sephora, Summer Fridays, Target, Typology, and Ulta.
Reader comments about products discussed on this website are very welcome.
Thoughts may be shared either by posting them in the comments section at the bottom of this page or by sending them directly to me at the following email address:
