Liquid Foundations With SPF
Description
November 1, 2022
By Lisa Petrison
Although I have long been focused on minimizing my facial skin’s exposure to sunlight, I have found that sunscreen in general tends to be substantially irritating to my delicate facial skin.
That is especially true of chemical sunscreens, but even physical sunscreens (zinc oxide and titanium dioxide) are mildly annoying and cause the general quality of my skin to get worse if I try to wear them on a regular basis.
Fortunately, I have found that wearing the right kind of hat – one that has a wide brim and that is rated as SPF50 or higher – is much more effective than sunscreen at protecting my face and neck from the sun.
An additional benefit of sun hats is that – in combination with sunglasses – they protect the eyes from the sun, thus reducing the likelihood of cataracts and other damage.
I started wearing an SPF50+ hat as well as sunglasses anytime I was outdoors when I was camping full-time in the Southwest desert and have continued to be scrupulous about never going outside without those.
I also tend to avoid doing activities that will expose me to bright sunlight during the midday hours and to seek out shade whenever possible.
I usually spend several hours per day outdoors and have found that these strategies have provided my face with excellent protection from the sun.
My facial skin never gets more than about half a shade darker during the summer months, and I feel that my face is showing little evidence of any sun damage despite the fact that I am now 58.
I’ve been interested to read recently that many experts in health toxicity issues – including EWG and Dr. Jill Carnahan – agree that protective hats/sunglasses/clothing and avoiding sun exposures entirely during peak hours are key, with safer sunscreens viewed more as a possibly helpful addition rather than as a total solution.
(Jill Carnahan’s suggestion that red raspberry oil, carrot seed oil and wheat germ oil can serve as effective sunscreens makes me want to look into trying those out.)
It is my observation that only about 1 in 1000 people wear what I would consider to be an adequate hat and that the large majority of people do not even wear what I would consider an inadequate hat (such as a baseball cap), even when outdoors in the bright summer sunlight for extended periods of time.
For them, sunscreen (even the relatively low level of sunscreen present in most foundations) may be at least a little helpful since it is the only sun protection that their faces are getting.
For this project, I tried out quite a few cleaner foundations and tinted moisturizers containing physical sunscreens (specifically, titanium dioxide or zinc oxide labeled as “non-nano”).
I have found that all of these products have irritated my face, but that putting on primer first decreases the irritation somewhat for me.
I would wear one of these (or an untinted facial sunscreen) in addition to my hat if I were going to be spending time in a boat or in the mountains skiing (since a hat would not protect against the strong rays of sunlight bouncing off the water or snow).
I also might consider wearing one of these products in addition to my hat if I were going to be spending a substantial amount of time in the sun during the midday hours on a particular day.
The products that I personally would choose do not include silicones since I feel that those interfere with the ability of my face to sweat properly.
People who prefer silicone-based foundation may find that different products than my own choices work out best for them.

The Sunday Afternoons website states, “Say goodbye to squinting and overheating—our sun hats will keep your eyes protected and your head cool with breathable materials, UPF 50+ sun protection , and style. No matter your outdoor adventure, we have a sun hat for you. From chic and stylish ribbon hats for a day on the lake, to breathable sun hats with neck capes for your next mountainous adventure, our hats have you covered.”
I bought my first Sunday Afternoons hat in Summer 2009 while camping in the hot desert sun in Moab, Utah, and now have more than a dozen of their hats in different styles and colors.
They have performed really well for me in terms of protecting my face from the sun and feeling comfortable, while at the same time looking reasonably presentable.
They have held up really well over the years as well, and I have yet to need to discard any of the ones that I have purchased.
My favorites are the Latitude Hat, the Ultra Adventure Hat, the Solar Bucket, the Clear Creek Boonie, and the Bug-Free Cruiser Net Hat.
All of these hats (and many others) are stated on the Sunday Afternoons website as providing SPF50+ and have worked very well for me in terms of protecting my face from the sun.
I have never gotten even a touch of a sunburn on my face or neck when wearing one of these hats and my facial skin has become only slightly darker during the summer months, even though I spend at least a couple of hours outdoors every day.
While I might wear a mineral-based sunscreen on my face if I were going to be on a boat (due to reflected rays from the water) or in midday sun for a long period of time, I would think of that as an addition to the sun protection provided by my hat, not as a replacement for it.

I swatched this product on my hand in an Ulta store and was not very impressed with how it looked, and so have not been very motivated to buy it yet.

The description of this product on the Bare Minerals website reads, “The #1 tinted moisturizer in the U.S. This 3-in-1 multi-tasker is a moisturizer, skin tint and SPF 30, with Hyaluronic Acid to boost hydration for a dewy, healthy-looking glow. Provides 24-hour hydration. Builds from sheer to light coverage, creating a dewy, healthy-looking glow. Visibly evens skin tone and blurs imperfections. Protects with broad spectrum mineral-based SPF 30.”
This product is one of the few sunscreens that contains only titanium dioxide, without any zinc oxide or chemical sunscreens.
I was hoping that this would mean that my skin would not be bothered by it, but unfortunately the irritation level has been about at the same level that I have experienced with all the sunscreens with zinc oxide in them.
I do like the texture of the product and have found it to be somewhat hydrating (perhaps in part due to the squalane and the sodium hyaluronate), though.
It has a bit of a shine to it that makes me think that it is using mica, even though I do not see that mentioned on the ingredients list.
Although it does not include any silicone, it seems to do okay in terms of not making my wrinkles or texture issues look much worse.
In terms of the ingredients, the main one of concern seems to be polysorbate-60, which is on Credo’s “dirty” list since it apparently is produced using ethylene oxide, a carcinogen.
I’m also personally a little concerned about the inclusion of trehalose since that is now suspected as being associated with susceptibility to Clostridium difficile (a type of antibiotic-resistant bacteria).
The product is available in 20 shades.
I have the shade Vanilla 02 (“very fair neutral skin with a peach hue”). Probably it is a little light for me, but it seems to look okay anyway.
Ellen’s Comments: “Does not blur wrinkles or pores. Goes on very smoothly. Probably better for young skin.”

Squalane and other moisturizers are mentioned on the ingredients list. The product does not contain any silicone or zinc oxide.
A total of 30 shades are available.
I tried a small sample of this product and found that it was unusually bad for me in terms of the extent to which it made the wrinkles and other textural issues on my skin look worse.
Many of the complaints about the product in user reviews have to do with the fact that the product does not adhere very well to the face and has a tendency to transfer onto other people’s clothing (such as when giving them a hug) and illness-protection masks.
I agree that this product does transfer more than most heavily pigmented foundations that I have tried and that this is an additional drawback.
This product would not be my choice even if I were looking for something with more coverage, therefore.

The description of this product on the Beautycounter website reads, “This multitasking tinted moisturizer blurs the line between makeup and skin care. Sheer, lightweight coverage helps to create a more even-looking skin tone, while SPF 20 mineral sunscreen works to protect against the sun’s damaging rays. Over time, a radiance-boosting blend of black currant seed oil, peony root extract, and vitamin C helps skin feel firmer and look more luminous.”
Several different kinds of silicone-type ingredients (including trimethylsiloxysilicate, dimethicone/vinyl dimethicone crosspolymer, and dimethicone) are included in it.
The product also includes a variety of hydrators (including sodium hyaluronate) and several different essential oils (including bergamot, orange, rose, clary and orange flower oils).
The product is fairly thick and shiny, with a finish that does not exaggerate my wrinkles too much.
I find the orange-tinged natural scent of the product to be pleasant, but it definitely is noticeable.
Although I have not found the product to be more annoying to my skin than other tinted moisturizers containing zinc oxide, I wonder if the essential oils used are problematic for some people.
The product is available in six shades. I have No. 3 (“light with golden undertones”) and it seems fine for me.

This product is described on the HAN website as follows: “A unique liquid Serum CC in a waterless formula infused with a cocktail of nourishing oils including Virgin Coconut, Organic Jojoba, Rose Hip and Vitamin E, and other skin-loving ingredients! Our clean CC with buildable medium to full coverage and Broad Spectrum SPF 30 is naturally derived, and dimethicone, silicone, petroleum and toxic-free! The airless pump bottle minimizes oxidation of the product that occurs from exposure to air and preserves the integrity and effectiveness of the formula and SPF.”
The oils used in this product include coconut, castor seed, shea butter, jojoba, olive, argan and rosehip.
The product also uses non-nano zinc and titanium dioxide to achieve a fairly high SPF30.
I really like the way that this product looks on my skin. It seems to provide a natural-looking glow without emphasizing my wrinkles as much as many products do.
However, because this is an oil-based foundation, I think that many people with less dry skin than mine would not find it appropriate for them.
I have used it with a primer underneath but without any skincare products (since putting moisturizer underneath it seems like too much).
Another thing to know about this product is that it dries down extremely slowly, taking 15 or more minutes before it really becomes set for me.
It does wear reasonably well once it has dried though.
At present, there are seven shades of this product being sold.
I have Shade 2 (“light with warm undertones”) and think that it is slightly darker than would be ideal for me.

The description of this product on the Honest website reads, “This multi-tasking miracle worker provides the benefits of mineral SPF, skincare, and makeup all in one flawless step. The clean sunscreen protects skin from the harsh rays and defends against blue light, while the skin-loving formula soothes, nourishes, and moisturizes skin all day. Infused with Vitamin C, the lightweight, breathable skin tint is designed to color correct and diffuse the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, blemishes, pores, and uneven skin tone for a smooth, radiant complexion. Our blendable + luminous shades are designed with 5% pigment to complement a wide range of skin tones and undertones + provide the benefits of a sunscreen without the white cast.”
The product contains several kinds of silicone, which seem to give the product a flexible finish without seeming terribly silicone-y to me.
I think that this product looks nice on my skin, providing a slightly glowy finish without drawing attention to textural issues.
Although the zinc oxide level is pretty high, I feel like my skin gets along with this product better than it does with most other foundations that contain sunscreen.
Nine shades are supposedly available.
I have the shade Dune (“light/medium, neutral undertones”) and feel that it has been fine on my skin.
Ellen’s Comments: “Smells fine. Similar to Saie Slip Tint in that it is a translucent foundation that is kind of slick and not really buildable. It dries down more quickly than Saie, though. Not bad for a light-coverage foundation. I would use this for a casual day.”

The Ilia website states, “Ilia Skin Tint features SPF 40 coverage with Non-Nano Zinc Oxide to help shield skin from UVA, UVB, UVC, blue light, and pollution. ILIA Skin Tint is created with active levels of Hyaluronic Acid, Plant-Based Squalane, and Niacinamide to visibly improve bare skin with every wear. It also creates a natural barrier for your skincare, sealing in hydration, plumping skin, and boosting any antioxidant effectiveness by 200%. Plus, it’s silicone-free, fragrance-free, chemical screen-free, oil-free, non-comedogenic, and safe for sensitive skin.”
This product has an unusually high SPF for a mineral-based sunscreen, which probably is why it feels pretty thick to me.
It also is quite shiny and dewy, which apparently is due to all the skin hydrators in it. Although it does dry down relatively quickly, my skin still looks quite shiny when I am wearing it.
Although there are not any silicones in this product, I feel like it does not make my skin texture look much worse or exaggerate my wrinkles.
Probably the reason for this is that the pigment in the product is quite light. Those who are looking for foundation coverage from their tinted moisturizer are not going to get much of it from this product.
The ingredients list looks pretty clean to me and my skin seems to do pretty well with it, with just a little irritation from the zinc.
In reading consumer comments, the main complaints that I see are related to the messiness of the delivery method (a dropper rather than a pump) and the smell.
I purchased my product directly from Ilia and do not think that the smell is bad at all (just a very slight odor that I associate with sunscreen). The suggestion that the product has a “Play-Doh smell” makes me think that the product has the potential of going bad, though.
The other product that I have the most complaints about smelling terrible when it goes bad is the Merit highlighter stick. Like this foundation, that product lists vegan squalane as the first ingredient, and so I wonder if that just smells really bad when it oxidizes.
I therefore would suggest buying this product from somewhere that it can be easily returned if it smells bad, and if it is okay using it up fast.
A total of 30 shades are available.
I have this product in the color Shela (“light-medium with neutral warm undertones”) and think that it looks fine on my skin.
The pigmentation is so light that probably a number of the other shades would look fine as well.

Calms and soothes. Water resistant to 40 minutes. SPF 15 broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sun protection. Gives a soft-focus effect that helps minimize the appearance of fine lines and enlarged pores.”
The product contains some dimethicone and a variety of botanicals. (The only essential oil mentioned is lavender, which tends to be fairly non-irritating, however.)
The product contains titanium dioxide as a low-level sunscreen, without any zinc oxide.
A few skincare ingredients – including jojoba, shea and sunflower seed oil – are included.
The product has a noticeable amount of pigmentation and seems to make the textural issues on my skin look a little worse.
It has a fairly thick consistency with a slightly sticky, matte finish.
I feel like it has been one of the least irritating sunscreen foundations that I have tried.
This product is available in seven shades.
I have the Medium Light version (“medium light with subtle yellow undertones”), and it seems to be a good match for my skin.

I agree that this product dries very quickly and that it provides a light layer on the skin considering the amount of coverage provided.
The finish is somewhat powdery looking, but at least it does not emphasize my wrinkles too much.
Although this foundation contains two different kinds of silicone, they are pretty far down on the ingredients list and the product does not seem too silicone-y to me.
I am not feeling that this product annoys my skin as much as many products with sunscreens in them do.
Fourteen shades are offered.
I tried GT5 (“light to medium with warm yellow/gold undertones”), but it turned out to be much too dark and also too yellow for me.
For some reason I have had a much more difficult time across the board choosing shades from the Jane Iredale website than I have from the website of almost any other brand.
The good thing is that the company offers free returns or exchanges (including paying for shipping) if foundation shades do not work out.
Ellen’s Comments: “Light, but buildable. Very nice coverage. Dries nicely.”
Size: 1.35 oz.

The Kosas website describes the product as “A medium coverage SPF treatment foundation with a natural, dreamy finish that instantly blends like a second skin to blur, visibly smooth texture + minimize pores. The powerhouse blend of hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, peptides, squalane, Vitamin B5, arnica + caffeine is clinically proven to hydrate, brighten, soothe, plump + protect. Dermatologically tested. Safe for sensitive skin. Non-acnegenic. Hypoallergenic.”
This foundation was released by Kosas in early 2022 and received quite a few excellent reviews from journalists and beauty influencers.
It is intended to be similar to the popular Kosas Revealer Concealer, which contains both caffeine and skincare ingredients.
The only ingredients in the product that EWG suggests are problematic are the sunscreens (zinc oxide and titanium dioxide).
Compared to tinted moisturizers, this foundation provides substantially more coverage as well as a moderate amount of sunscreen protection.
It does not contain any silicones but still does not seem to exacerbate the textural issues on my skin very much.
I also think that the hydrating ingredients are helpful and that (despite the presence of the zinc oxide) it does not feel too irritating to my skin.
Like the Kosas Revealer Concealer, the product has a mild herbal smell that I have found to be tolerable.
Considering the reasonably high level of non-chemical and non-nano SPF in the product, I think it has gone on very nicely and not felt uncomfortable on my skin at all.
The finish looks slightly shiny to my eyes, but a little bit of finishing powder addresses that easily.
The product is available in an impressive 36 shades.
I have been using Light+ Neutral Warm 170 (“light+ with peachy gold undertones”) and it has seemed like a good match to me.
If I were looking for a foundation with a substantial amount of pigment coverage plus SPF, this is likely the one that I would choose.
Ellen’s Comments: “I do think this product is very good for one’s skin. It has SPF 25. It goes on pretty thick, and it is a nice enough finish, but definitely heavy, as one would hope for a sunscreen. I feel like this is a workhorse product that has good utility for sun protection, but it would not be my go-to when seeking the loveliest, smoothest finish possible.I first tried this over a primer, and it did not go on as well as when I put it over bare skin. This product has an odor. I don’t love it or hate it, but it is noticeable. It does a good job smoothing my skin and minimizing pores.”

The Saie website states about this product: “We packed it with a blend of nourishing, skin-loving ingredients so that it doubles as your daily skincare while providing clean SPF 35 protection. Each shade is crafted to seamlessly blend into a wide range of skin tones and delivers our dewy, signature SaieGlow. Get to know these effective, luxury ingredients. Hyaluronic Acid deeply hydrates. Licorice Root extract brightens and refines. 100% mineral zinc-oxide offers clean SPF protection. Pansy Flower fights free radicals and delivers antioxidants.”
This product seems pretty similar to the Ilia Super Serum to me. Both products are quite thick and contain large amounts of zinc oxide and skin hydrators, along with a minimal amount of foundation coverage. Both seem about equally shiny on the skin and are pretty clean apart from the physical sunscreens.
As with the Ilia product, some users do complain about the smell of this product. (I don’t feel that this product has much of a smell at all and so wonder if those who complain may have been using product that had gone bad.)
The Saie product lists coconut derivatives and grape seed oil rather than squalane as the main hydrating ingredients.
One big difference is that the Saie product comes with a pump in a squeeze tube, rather than a hard bottle with a dropper. I do think that the pump idea is a little less messy.
I do not feel that the Saie product makes the texture issues on my skin look worse, primarily because it contains very little pigment.
The product is available in 14 shades.
I have Shade 3 (“light to medium peach”) and it seems fine for me.
Ellen’s Comments: “Saie Slip Tint SPF Foundation is very slick and not buildable. I don’t think it is intended to be buildable. It made my skin very shiny. The smell is very strong and unpleasant to me. It did spread easily, for what it is worth.”

The Tower 28 website describes this product as follows: “A 2-in-1 mineral sunscreen with broad spectrum UVA/UVB SPF 30 protection and light-medium coverage. SunnyDays evens redness and soothes UV-stressed skin while maintaining a natural finish so your freckles, moles, and real skin can have their moment in the sun! Designed for problem/sensitive skin. SunnyDays has the National Eczema Association’s Seal of Acceptance. SunnyDays is safe for all skin types, including sensitive skin. Alcohol-free, fragrance-free, + safe for sensitive/problem skin. Dermatologist tested, non-comedogenic, gluten-free, vegan + cruelty-free.”
This product does seem to have more pigment than some of the others mentioned here, and so I can see how with enough layers it might approach medium coverage.
The finish is fairly shiny, which seems to be related both to the mica included in the formula as well as to the formula being slow to dry down.
The product contains some trimethylsiloxysilicate (described by EWG as a “silicon-based polymer”) but no other silicones.
I have not found that it makes my wrinkles or other textural issues look worse.
The scent seems to me very mild and unobjectionable.
The product is available in 14 shades.
I have the color 20 Mulholland (“light with neutral undertones”) and it seems okay on my skin.
Considering that this product has a high SPF and basically no silicone, I am impressed with the performance and conceivably might buy it again.
Ellen’s Comments: “Similar to Beautycounter Dew Skin Tinted Moisturizer. Feels nice. Goes on evenly with a bit of coverage. May be a tad bit lighter coverage than Beautycounter.”

The description of this product reads, “Your makeup, skincare, and sun protection all in one step. Fourteen shades are available.
I have yet to try this product but am looking forward to doing so soon.
Ellen’s Comments: “This product definitely smells like zinc and is very sticky. If I put it directly on my skin without a primer, it tingles a bit. If I put it on over a primer, it feels better and seems like a decent compromise between the risks and benefits of using a product with SPF.”

A Note From Lisa
Products that I have tried or researched and that I have not found to be acceptable from a toxicity standpoint have been omitted entirely from the discussions on this website.
However, since a goal of this project is to introduce people to a range of options in terms of price and functionality, some products discussed on this site include ingredients that may not be appropriate for everyone.
It’s my hope that all individuals making their way to this site will find at least a few options from each product category that meet all of their own needs and wants from a variety of perspectives.
