Athr ceased operations in 2023.

The description of the Athr Desert Sunset Palette reads, “Lustrous, rich and multidimensional, this ten-shade eyeshadow palette pulls warmth and inspiration from the desert sunset. Warm shimmers, opaque mattes and reflective metallics hold intense pigmentation while blending together in harmony. Our silk-like eyeshadow formula effortlessly glides along the skin, delivering high color payoff with just one swipe. These sun-drenched shadows reduce the appearance of dark spots and texture, while protecting the skin from aging free radicals. Contains desert-derived organic prickly pear seed oil (provides the skin with intense hydration and antioxidants); organic shea butter (increases moisture in the skin); and organic coconut oil (serves as a smoothing agent that helps deliver creamy, one-swipe payoff).”

The other palettes from this company have similar descriptions.

I have the Desert Sunset Palette ($48) as well as a few of their eyeshadow quads ($20).

I have been really enthusiastic about these palettes from a variety of perspectives, especially in terms of it being easy for me to apply the product and to create a pretty look.

Although I am not an expert in using a bunch of different colors of shadows on my eyelids, I feel like my eyes have looked nice regardless of how I have used the colors in these palettes.

The shadows go on smoothly and blend easily, without much work or frustration on my part.

Quite a few of the colors work well for me as “one and done” eyeshadows, and using several shades together also has worked well.

In addition, the products that I have tried have clean ingredient lists and have not irritated my eyes at all.

I liked these palettes so much that I talked a friend into trying the Moonlight Crystal Gemstone Palette, which seems much more appropriate for people with cool skin tones and blue or grey eyes than it would be for me.

However, when I read the ingredient list for this palette, I was perplexed to find that it included aluminum powder, even though Athr said elsewhere on its website that aluminum powder was not used in its products.

I know that I personally react strongly to the presence of aluminum powder in eye products and that other people do as well, and it is rated a 9 (red) out of 10 in terms of being problematic by EWG.

I wasn’t able to find a way to get in touch with Athr and so wrote to Credo (which has aluminum powder on its “dirty list”) and asked them if it really was the case that this product contains aluminum powder.

Credo wrote back to me that they were going to investigate and then after a few weeks removed both the Moonlight Crystal Gemstone Palette and the Rose Quartz Crystal Gemstone Palette from their offerings.

They wrote to me in Spring 2022, “Thank you so much for your patience while we escalated this to our merchandising team, the Athr team and our Sustainability & Impact team. After several days of back and forth, we will be conducting a review of the products and have removed them from our site to avoid any concern or confusion. The brand has also confirmed that they will be reformulating the Rose Quartz palette and the new formulation should be released sometime in July :).”

The Rose Quartz palette was reintroduced to the Credo site in early August. Although aluminum powder is still listed as an ingredient in the “May Contain” list on the Credo site, it is no longer mentioned on the Athr site and so I wonder if Credo is just using the old listing.

Athr does now have an email address (hello at athrbeauty dot com) listed on their website, and so those who have concerns about their ingredients may be able to get a response by writing to them.

Personally, this experience has not made me uninterested in using Athr products since I do really like their formulas, but I definitely am going to be inclined to check the ingredient lists carefully rather than assuming that everything from them is going to be okay.

The description of this product on the Aveda website reads, “Our creamy concealer is infused with reflective minerals, to add radiance to skin while hiding under-eye puffiness and other imperfections. Full coverage; semi-matte finish. Soft-tip, easy-gliding wand applicator. Aroma-free, opthamologist-tested and non-acnegenic.”

While I don’t feel that I had any problems with this product irritating my skin, it has not worked well at all in terms of camouflaging the dark circles under my eyes.

In addition, despite the inclusion of a silicone product (phenyl trimethicone) as the second ingredient, it seems to emphasize my wrinkles and make them look worse.

The use of the reflective materials seems to me another drawback, since this draws attention to the areas of my face that I feel are more problematic.

Performance Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Ingredients Rating: 5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

This product was discontinued in 2022.

This lipstick from Axiology is one of the few that I have found that contains only natural ingredients, including only natural color pigments.

I have tried a bunch of different samples of these lipsticks and found the colors to be very pretty as well as flattering on me.

They have a natural fruity type smell/taste (apparently from orange and elderberry) that I find appealing.

The products taste pretty clean to me and I have not had any problems in terms of reacting to them.

However, I have not been very motivated to buy a full-size product because I have found the formula to be rather drying and to wear off quickly.

On the plus side, the availability of samples through the Axiology website is very helpful in terms of testing the formula and the color choices.

Those who are looking to avoid artificial colorings and other artificial ingredients may want to give them a try.

The description of this product reads, “Crease-proof, waterproof concealer for skin-improving, long lasting coverage. Reduces the appearance of pores and fine lines with a blurring, soft-focus effect. Glides on smoothly and binds to skin for lasting high performance. Kaolin clay helps absorb excess oil. Clinically shown to immediately increase skin’s hydration and to help skin attract and maintain moisture.”

This is a small concealer stick that contains silicone and that has performed well on my face in terms of providing me with spot coverage that disappears into my skin.

Although I usually do not like to put silicone on my skin, in this case the amount of the product that I am using is very small and so it does not seem to matter as much.

There are 15 shades offered, most of them for lighter skin. I have the Fair/Light Warm (02) version and it has seemed okay.

I haven’t used this product that much because I feel like the Jones Road face pencils serve a similar function without the silicone.

However, my face does not seem to have been bothered by this product and it has been pleasant to use.

Bare Minerals Complexion Rescue Hydrating Foundation Stick SPF25 – $33

Overall Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Performance Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Ingredients Rating: 3 out of 5 stars (3 / 5)

Lisa Irritation Level: Very Mild

Processed Fragrance: None

Silicone Level: Moderate

The description of this product reads, “A clean, water-based liquid foundation in a stick that combines hydrating skincare benefits and SPF with naturally radiant medium coverage. Medium coverage. Naturally radiant finish. Use as foundation, concealer, contour or touch-up.”

This is a silicone-containing foundation stick that incoporates a substantial amount of titanium dioxide as a sunscreen. Several preservatives (BHT, sodium benzoate and phenoxyethanol) also are included.

The presence of trehalose in the product is a source of mild concern to me since this has been cited as being associated with the spread of the antibiotic-resistant bacteria C. difficile, but perhaps that is being alarmist.

Also noteworthy on the ingredient list is squalane, which contributes to the “hydrating” aspect.

I have found this product to be much softer and creamier than most other foundation sticks that I have tried. I usually use my fingers to apply it, rather than wiping the stick over my face.

Compared to my favorite foundation sticks (which disappear totally into my skin), this product seems to sit more on the surface of my skin and to draw some attention to my skin’s texture (including my wrinkles).

In addition, this product seems to have been a little irritating to my face on the few occasions that I have tried wearing it all day. I am guessing this is just due to the high level of titanium dioxide, though.

The product is available in 20 shades.

The Buttercream (03) shade is a pretty good match for my skin, especially during the summer months. Vanilla (02) was a little too pink for me.

Bare Minerals Good Hydrations Silky Face Primer – $27

Overall Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Performance Rating: 5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

Ingredients Rating: 3 out of 5 stars (3 / 5)

Lisa Irritation Level: None

This product was discontinued in 2022.

The description of this product on the Bare Minerals website reads, “This makeup primer hydrates and nourishes dry, flaky skin to create a smooth canvas for improved foundation application and wear. Rich, silky texture dries to a smooth, radiant finish with a soft focus effect. Provides immediate and lasting skin hydration. Minimizes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Improves application and wear time of foundation.”

I have tried both this Bare Minerals primer and their more popular Prime Time Foundation Primer.

Both of the products feel virtually the same to me, giving my face the sort of slick feeling that I associate with products containing especially high levels of silicone.

Although this primer contains some sodium acetylated hyaluronate and some coconut-derived ingredients as hydrators, I did not really notice it as being hydrating at all.

However, I do feel that this is a pretty clean product, with few problematic ingredients other than the silicone being flagged by EWG.

The only other ingredient of apparent concern is phenoxyethanol, a preservative that some people are not able to tolerate.

I do not feel that this primer irritated my skin (though like most silicone-based primers it was difficult to remove).

I also appreciate the fact that the product basically just looks invisible on my face, rather than having the shiny appearance of many other primers that I have tried.

The Bare Minerals website describes this product as follows, “A vegan, oil-free primer that blurs imperfections while extending makeup wear. This cult-favorite combats dryness, evens texture and minimizes the look of pores. Smooth, oil-free formula blurs imperfections and extends makeup wear. Minimizes the look of fine lines, excess oil, enlarged pores and uneven texture. Combats flaky dryness and rough patches. Nourishes and soothes skin with antioxidants and plant extracts. Silky formula glides on without any stickiness. Pairs perfectly with any foundation. Dermatologist-tested.”

The primer consists basically of several kinds of silicone, along with a few added botanical ingredients.

I have found it to look virtually invisible on my face, which I consider to be preferable to the shiny or sparkly appearance that many primers give me.

The product does give my skin the slick feeling that I associate with silicone primers in general, however.

Based on the ingredients list, this seems like an unusually clean product other than the silicones.

I have not found that it has irritated my face at all and hardly can tell that I am wearing it.

It would be at on my list of products to consider if I were considering using a silicone-based primer on a regular basis.

The main downside with the product is that it has been rather difficult for me to remove it thoroughly.

Beautycounter Color Intense Lipstick – $34

Overall Rating: 3 out of 5 stars (3 / 5)

Performance Rating: 3 out of 5 stars (3 / 5)

Ingredients Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

This product was discontinued in early 2022.

This product from Beautycounter tastes and smells strongly of peppermint, which I do not find to be a problem at all but which some people cannot tolerate or do not like.

Although I can taste the mild presence of some kind of laboratory-derived chemical(s) underneath the peppermint, in general the taste is not too bad.

The texture is a little thicker and stickier than the company’s “Sheer Genius” lipstick line but is still not really all that opaque.

I have the color Backstage, which is described as “beige pink” and which looks more brownish on me than I had expected from the website pictures.

The color looks okay on me but I’m somewhat disinclined to wear this lipstick because it has a tendency to smear outside my lips and look messy if I am not careful.

I think the tendency for the lipstick to smear might be a bigger problem with the brighter colors offered.

EWG lists only the peppermint oil and coloring agents as problematic, but there are a few more chemical skin conditioners listed in the ingredients list that I don’t especially want to be in my lipstick either.

I would not buy this one again.

Bite Beauty Power Move Creamy Matte Lip Crayon – $26

Overall Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Performance Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Ingredients Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Lisa Irritation Level: Mild (taste)

Bite Beauty announced that it was going out of business in May 2022.

These lip crayons from Bite have color that is as saturated as that of many conventional lipsticks, but they also are especially hydrating as well as easy to apply due to their shape.

The crayons are narrow and have a pointed tip like a lip pencil, which allows me to neatly line my lips and then to fill them in with color using just this one product.

I am appreciative of the fact that the color stays nicely in place without much smearing and that it lasts for a while before it needs to be reapplied.

I have a special-edition set of four crayons called “Millennial Pinks” and really like that particular color selection. One of these shades – Nonino (“rosy mauve”) – is part of the company’s regular product line.

A downside of this product is that the ingredients list mentions unspecified “Flavor.” I have not been able to obtain any information about what sort of origin this flavor might have.

While the unspecified flavor in the regular Bite lipsticks does not seem too objectionable to me, I’m not crazy about the fruity flavor/smell of these lip crayons. The crayons are pretty enough that I wear them sometimes anyway, even though the smell and taste always bothers me a little.

I have additional concerns due to the fact that quite a few user reviews have mentioned a “bad smell” to the crayons that I think sounds likely due to rancidity or other quality control problems.

The other thing that I have learned from reading user reviews is that a lot of people seem to have been much happier with Bite’s lip products  prior to 2020, when they removed all the beeswax and lanolin in order to become a vegan company. I wonder if that was a mistake for them.

In any case, I doubt I will buy any more of these crayons due to my concern about the various smell and taste issues.

Bite Beauty Power Move Hydrating Soft Matte Lipstick – $28

♥ Lisa’s Choice

♣ Living Clean Superstar

Overall Rating: 5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

Performance Rating: 5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

Ingredients Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Bite Beauty announced that it was going out of business in May 2022.

Bite describes this product as “a clean, vegan, hydrating soft matte lipstick, powered by nourishing cocoa butter, for lasting lightweight color.”

I have found this lipstick to be pretty easily wearable, without needing to necessarily use a liner under it.

I like the consistency and feel that the taste (which I think is reflective of the toxicity level of the product) is tolerable.

Although it doesn’t last nearly as long as (say) my MAC lipsticks do, it does wear pretty well and is easy to reapply.

The product contains several kinds of silicone (including dimethicone as the first ingredient), and so some people may have a problem with that.

Personally, while I am not crazy about silicone-based primers or foundation products, I have found that silicone-based lip products seem to work well for me.

These lipsticks also contain BHT, which is a fat preservative that is allowed in Europe but that some people find concerning. Credo lists BHT on its “Dirty” list, describing it as “a Toluene-based preservative linked to skin irritation.”

I’ve now tried lipsticks containing BHT from a number of different companies and have not found any of them to be irritating to me. Others may have different experiences, however.

The product also includes unspecified “Aroma/Flavor,” which I consider to be problematic as a matter of principle. I feel like the taste and smell has been okay for me, but that may not be the case for others.

Although Bite acknowledges using “both naturally derived scents and less than 1% of synthetic fragrance” in its products, I feel like this must apply to some of Bite’s other products since I am not sensing that this lipstick includes any synthetic fragrance except for (possibly) vanillin.

Although the Bite lipsticks contain artificial colors, the list is shorter than is the case for some lipsticks discussed on this page. I am guessing this is because the lipstick colors are mostly on the softer side rather than being really bright.

I have this lipstick in Tamarind (“soft caramel”), and I think that it is a very pretty color and that it looks nice on me.

Probably the next shade that I try will be the especially popular Sugar Buns (“pink nude”).

Bite Upswing Full-Volume Mascara – $14

Overall Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Performance Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Ingredients Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Bite Beauty announced that it was going out of business in May 2022.

This is a “full-volume mascara” that has a relatively clean ingredients list and that has never caused any irritation to my eyes.

It has a fat plastic applicator that picks up quite a lot of the product. Even if I do my best to wipe off the excess, it deposits quite a lot of it on my lashes, causing them to stick together in a pretty major way.

The product has an oddly dry consistency that goes on pretty easily without any appreciable smearing.

However, even if I carefully use a spoolie after applying the product, it seems virtually impossible to get my lashes to look natural after I have put this mascara on. Each lash is quite thick and the clumps are hard to break up.

That is not the look that I want when I use mascara, but for those who do want a dramatic volumized look, this could be a good choice.

BK Beauty True Beauty Eyeshadow Palette – $45

Performance Rating: Not Yet Rated

Ingredients Rating: 3 out of 5 stars (3 / 5)

Silicone Level: High

Problematic Colorings: Ultramarines, Red #40, Ferric Ferrocyanide

Packaging: Paper With Mirror

BK Beauty stopped selling this palette in 2023.

The description of this product reads, “This gorgeous palette features 12 shades, balanced with 6 matte and 6 shimmer shades. The palette was created to be an everyday essentials palette, offering neutrals with a little pop color. These shades compliment every skin tone and every skin texture. You’ll find the shimmers offer a soft, creamy texture and can be layered or worn sheer.”

I have some BK Beauty eyeshadow brushes that I really like and have heard some good things about this palette, and so I am interested in trying it.

While some of the shadows in the palette contain talc, BK Beauty states on its website that the talc is certified to be asbestos-free.

The website copy states, “Many people have concerns with the ingredient talc due to a history of contamination in the powder. Because of this, our manufacturer has certified with an independent lab that the material meets both usp and cfr requirements. The powders used have been certified asbestos-free.”

I have yet to try this product but hope to do so soon.

Cocokind Mai-Light Highlighter – $13

♣ Living Clean Superstar

Overall Rating: 5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

Performance Rating: 5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

Ingredients Rating: 5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

This product disappeared from the Cocokind website in Summer 2022.

I think that this is a beautiful highlighter that is available at a very reasonable price.

It is a rose-gold color that looks especially nice on my own skin, but I think that it would work for many other people as well.

It feels really clean to me and goes on smoothly, giving a pretty muted glow.

Contrary to what the brand name may imply, this product does not include any coconut oil at all.

It also does not include any laboratory-created chemical ingredients.

The only preservatives are natural ones such as tocopherol and rosemary extract, and so it may be a good idea to try to use this relatively quickly rather than thinking it will last forever.

This highlighter is the only makeup product currently offered by Cocokind, which is one of my favorite skincare companies.

Hopefully they will decide to offer more products in the future though, since this one (like all the other Cocokind products I have tried) is terrific though.

The low price is really just a bonus that makes the excellent product an outstanding bargain, in my opinion.

HAN Illuminator – $20

Overall Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Performance Rating: 3 out of 5 stars (3 / 5)

Ingredients Rating: 5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

This product seems to have been discontinued in 2022.

I have had very good experiences with other HAN makeup products but was rather disappointed with the HAN Illuminator.

It supposedly is available in two shades – Champagne (“light gold champagne”) and Aphrodite (“peach with soft gold shimmer”) – but I have managed to find the first one available for sale.

The product seems to consist mostly of coconut oil and is rather soft and creamy.

It seems to me that the coconut oil must have melted and then re-hardened at some point, because the product had quite a few small hard grains scattered in it.

The grains clearly consisted of little pieces of coconut oil and would melt when I put the product on my face.

Although the product looked okay on me, in a muted way, it felt like there was something wrong with the product and thus made me disinclined to use it.

I bought the product directly from HAN and think that perhaps they need to go back to the drawing board on this one.

Honest Luminizing Glow Powder – $20

♣ Living Clean Superstar

Overall Rating: 5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

Performance Rating: 5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

Ingredients Rating: 5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

Lisa Irritation Level: None

Processed Fragrance: None

Problematic Colorings: None

Silicone Level: None

Main Ingredients: Mica, Silica, Cornstarch, Squalane

Type: Pressed

Number of Shades: 2

This product was removed from the Honest website in 2022.

The description of this product reads, “Made with light-reflecting pigments, this silky, luminizing, baked powder delivers a radiant, filtered finish without the glitter. Sheer, gorgeous hues diffuses onto skin, capturing the right amount of soft-focus light for a natural glow. Made Without: Parabens, Paraffins, Talc, Petrolatum, Mineral Oil, Synthetic Fragrances.”

This powder contains cornstarch and does seem to be a little drying when I try to use it as just a finishing powder.

It has worked pretty well for me for summertime use to control sweating issues, however.

One thing that I like about this powder is that it provides what I consider to be the right amount of shimmer – enough to look soft and pretty, but not so much that it is obvious that highlighter is being worn.

The powder also feels quite clean to me and has not irritated my skin.

The product is available in two shades – Midnight Reflection (said to be appropriate for fair or light skin tones) and Dusk Reflection (said to be suitable either for pretty dark skin tones or as a bronzer for those with lighter skin tones).

I have tried both of these shades and feel like they both have worked quite well for me and have looked very natural on my skin.

Although I mostly just use this product during the warmer months of the year, I do really like it and consider the reasonable price to be just a nice bonus.

I suspect I will end up buying this product again in the future if it remains on the market.

This product was discontinued in 2023.

The description of this product reads: “Made with light-reflecting pigments, this silky, luminizing, baked powder delivers a radiant, filtered finish without the glitter. Sheer, gorgeous hues diffuses onto skin, capturing the right amount of soft-focus light for a natural glow.”

This product is available in two colors – Midnight Reflection (which works for me as a regular finishing powder) and Dusk Reflection (which is intended as a finishing powder for darker skins but also may be used as a bronzer on lighter skins).

Although this is called a “luminizing glow powder,” it actually has virtually no shimmer and can easily be used over the entire face.

When swatched, the Dusk Reflection product looks virtually identical to the Clinique Powder Pop Flower Bronzer in terms of both the tone (medium tan) and the undertone (with a golden-peachy feeling to it).

I personally have had a little more luck using the Clinique Powder Pop Bronzer though, making me think that a difference in the formula is key here.

The Honest product contains totally different ingredients (including a good bit of cornstarch) and does not seem to pick up on the brush as easily as the Clinique bronzer does.

On the other hand, the Honest product is considerably less expensive than the Clinique bronzer.

It also has a cleaner ingredients list (including all-natural coloring agents and no problematic preservatives).

As with the Clinique bronzer, I don’t think that people with skin that is much darker than mine would be able to use this product as a bronzer at all.

I can see how it might work very well for those with darker skins as a finishing powder, especially during the summer months when the cornstarch would help to absorb excess sweat and oil, though.

Honest Lush Sheer Lip Crayon – $13

This product was discontinued in 2022.

These lip crayons from Honest are sheer and moisturizing, with a clean ingredients list.

The flavor is a fruity vanilla, derived from real fruit (raspberry, blackberry and grape) and real vanilla extract.

So far, I have only tried the Blossom shade (peachy-pink). Several other shades have been available in the past, but they have been out of stock for quite a while.

The product comes in crayon form in a twist-up plastic tube and goes on the lips easily, with a relaxed vibe and a very slight shimmer.

The crayon is soft enough that the one that I own has gotten a little misshapen with use, but I have not found that to be a substantial problem.

I would consider buying additional shades in this product if any become available.

Applicator Type: Doe-foot applicator

Gloss Level: Very glossy

This product seems to have been discontinued as of Summer 2022.

Item Beauty is a cosmetics company launched in 2020 by Addison Rae, a social media star with 87 million TikTok followers.

I received one of the company’s new lip glosses in a “Clean at Sephora” product set and so gave it a try.

I was surprised to find that a product in a set like this would include something that mentions “fragrance” without any further elaboration in the ingredients list.

The gloss has a very strong artificial peach scent and also tastes a little like perfume to me.

Apparently, “Clean at Sephora” accepts items that contain unspecified fragrance if the amount is less than 1% of the total product content (which does not seem to me to be a very high bar considering how potent fragrances usually are).

I’ve tried to find out more information about what ingredients are used in this particular fragrance but haven’t come up with anything at all on that.

Apart from the fragrance, this product has a pretty clean ingredients list.

I have the shade Come Thru, which has a neutral color.

The lip gloss is moderately thick but not very sticky, and it feels pretty good on my lips apart from the fragrance and taste.

Some moisturizing ingredients (including jojoba oil, almond oil, camellia japonica seed oil and shea butter) are included in it.

All in all, I understand that many young people especially enjoy highly fragranced products and that most of the competitors for this product include many different quite toxic ingredients. And apart from the fragrance, I do think this is a pretty good product.

I still cannot suggest that people buy it though.

Jane Iredale Liquid Minerals A Foundation – $58

Living Clean Rating: 9 out of 10

Performance Rating: 5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

Ingredients Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Lisa Irritation Level: None

Processed Fragrance: Calendula Officinalis Flower Oil

Foundation Type: Gel Suspension

Coverage Level: Light

This product was discontinued in 2023.

The description of this product reads, “A serum with pigment that provides sheer to medium coverage. Provides hydration, diminishes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, minimizes the appearance of pores, evens out skin tone and adheres so well, there is minimal transference. The beads or spheres visible in the airless pump are actually liposomes encapsulating liposomes. State-of-the-art technology prevents active ingredients from degrading and allows actives to time release into the skin.”

This foundation was introduced about a decade ago and is often cited as being especially appropriate for sensitive skin.

It seems to me to be similar to a moisturizing silicone-free primer with a little bit of tint added to it.

Although I have liked this foundation a lot, I usually try to avoid putting too much of it in the area next to my eyes since it does seem to make my wrinkles look a little worse there.

Apart from that, it seems to improve the texture and appearance of my skin substantially, without causing any irritation or looking like I am wearing any makeup at all.

I think that the ingredient list is quite clean and feel fine about the idea of wearing this as often as I choose, even every day.

I also enjoy having the bottle sitting in my bathroom because I think that it looks interesting.

A downside of this product is that only 13 shades are offered, with none of them appropriate for darker skintones.

Jane Iredale does sell other foundations with broader shade ranges, and so perhaps they will widen it for this product soon too.

I have the shade Amber (“light to medium with gold undertones”), and it has worked out fine for me.

This product is sheer enough that some of the other shades probably would be fine too.

Overall Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Performance Rating: 3 out of 5 stars (3 / 5)

Ingredients Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

This product was reformulated and released with different packaging in early 2022.

I tried this blush as part of the Jane Iredale Pure & Simple Makeup Kit, which also includes two foundation colors and two eye shadow colors (as well as a mini lip balm).

I found all of the pressed powder products to be very dry and hard, to the point that I had a difficult time getting them to show up on my face at all.

I don’t quite understand this since the Jane Iredale products do tend to get generally good reviews.

Perhaps it is just that my own very dry skin and the dry winter environment where I live did not work well with this particular formula.

I do feel like the product felt clean to me and that the Mocha blush color was very pretty, though.

Perhaps the product is better suited to skin that is less dry than mine or to more humid climates.

This product was discontinued in 2023.

The description of this product reads, “Comfy makeup, active skincare. A clean, light-coverage skin tint and nourishing skin elixir with a velvety finish that still looks like your skin — just way more even, healthy and balanced.”

This product basically contains just mineral pigments mixed with a variety of higher-quality face oils (including avocado, meadowfoam, red raspberry, jojoba, camellia seed and rosehip seed).

My face seems to really like this product and it has not caused me any irritation at all.

I think that it gives me a dewy look and softens my wrinkles a bit.

I usually wear it only in winter, when I need the moisturizing benefits and when I am less likely to be sweating (since wiping sweat off my face tends to remove this foundation as well).

Because this is an oil-based foundation, there are certain other products – especially silicone-based primers – that are very poor companions for it.

Most of those who like this product seem to be using it right over their daytime moisturizer, in combination with concealer and a little face powder.

For those who do not have very dry skin, a moisturizer may not even be needed under this product.

Although the company suggests the Kosas Revealer Concealer as a good companion, I have found that it has worked fine with my Jones Road face pencils or with foundation sticks that do not contain silicone.

The product is available in 16 shades, which is a pretty good range for a tinted moisturizer.

I have Tone 04 (“light medium with golden undertones”) and feel that it is a good match for my skin.

However, compared to the other foundation sticks that I have tried, this one seems to emphasize my wrinkles a lot.

Despite the presence of squalane in the formula, it also feels rather dry on my face and does not go on as smoothly as many other foundation sticks have.

On the plus side, the product has felt okay to me in terms of not being irritating. and it seems not to have any sort of scent that I can detect.

Perhaps it would work better for someone who does not have skin that is quite as dry as mine.

A total of 11 shades are available.

The shade Creamy Nude seems to be about perfect for me in terms of the color.

Rituel de Fille Luminous Foundation – $56

♥ Lisa’s Choice

♣ Living Clean Superstar

Living Clean Rating: 10 out of 10

Performance Rating: 5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

Ingredients Rating: 5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

Lisa Irritation Level: None

Processed Fragrance: Frankincense Oil

Foundation Type: Oil-Based

Coverage Level: Light

This product was introduced as a lab sample in 2022 and is no longer available.

The description of this product reads, “Gentle organic skincare ingredients artfully blended with mineral pigments to create an unparalleled complexion-supporting foundation. Luminous Elixir Three Drop Foundation merges beautifully with your skin for weightless coverage that looks and feels like a part of you. Created for all skin types, each chameleon shade adapts to your undertones as it imparts a naturally luminous silk finish.”

This product was released in early 2022 as a lab sample. It is currently listed on the Rituel de Fille site as being out-of-stock in all shades but is expected to be re-released at some point in the future.

I found the product to be fairly similar to the Kosas Tinted Face Oil, but with a little more pigment and ingredients that seem to me to be of slightly better quality.

As with many of the other oil-based foundations that I have tried, this one has worked better for me during the cooler months of the year when my skin is more in need of extra moisture.

In warm weather, the sweat from my face mixes with the foundation and turns into a big mess, on the other hand.

I do like this product enough that I would consider buying it again just for use during the wintertime months.

It does feel like it has been very good for my skin in terms of the moisturizing benefits, and it has not caused me any irritation at all.

Although the ingredient list is very clean, the product does contain frankincense oil.  I have not found that to be a problem for me in terms of either the scent or how my skin has reacted to the product, though.

I have the shade Metis (“light/medium with sandy undertones”) and feel that it has worked well for me.

This product was discontinued in late 2021.

These all-natural eye shadows consist of a somewhat firm cream formula sold in a glass pot with a plastic lid.

I have the Magnetic version, which is stated as “our biggest seller this is a taupe/silver shadow with a hint of mauve.”

Although it does not provide the more dramatic look of the new RMS shadows, it gives a nice wash of color on my eyelids that I think is very pretty (and actually more of the look that I want to achieve).

It is true that it does not last all that long on my eyelids though.

Nonetheless, I think that this is a good eye shadow considering how clean it is and so am sad to see it being phased out.

This product was removed from the RMS website in 2022.

The founder and head of RMS Beauty is a makeup artist with chemical sensitivities, and everything that I have tried from them has felt really clean to me.

This includes the company’s lip pencils, with the only problematic ingredient being a red dye used in the Dressed Up Red (bright red) shade.

Although I was afraid that the Nighttime Nude color would be too dark for me, it has worked fine and has felt good to me.

(The Daytime Nude version has been out of stock for quite a while and may have been permanently discontinued.)

Unlike other mechanical lip pencils that I have tried, this one does not contain any silicone.

I have found it somewhat dry to apply (though not quite as much so as the Jane Iredale pencil).

Although I doubt that I will buy this pencil again myself, I think that it could be worth considering for those who are looking for an especially clean neutral liner or possibly for a generally good liner in a bright red color.

Note that items that have been purchased through the RMS Beauty website and then used may not be returned under any circumstances. Those who are not certain that they will like or be able to tolerate the products may want to consider buying instead through another RMS retailer (such as Credo or Sephora) that will take back gently used products if they do not work out.

RMS Beauty Luminizing Powder – $38

Ingredients Rating: 5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

The description of this product reads, “An ultra-fine, moisture-delivering powder with light-reflective shimmer. Highlights skin with a luminous finish. Available in three versatile shades. Natural oils and refined mineral pigments pressed without exposure to heat give you the ease of a powder and the moisturizing texture of a cream to add a touch of luminosity to skin. Looks healthy, never drying!”

RMS currently offers powder highlighters in three neutral shades that echo the colors of the company’s most popular cream highlighters, providing moderately shimmery highlights to the cheeks and eyes.

Grande Dame (“an alluring moonlit-champagne luminosity”) is similar in color to the the company’s popular Living Luminizer.

Midnight Hour (“a glowing rose-gold radiance”) is similar to the Master Mixer and the Master Radiance Base Rich in Radiance.

Madeira Bronzer (“an enchanting sun-kissed bronzed highlight”) is similar to the Buriti Bronzer and the Master Radiance Base Deep in Radiance.

The first two shades have worked well for me on my cheeks as well as my eyes.

The Madeira Bronzer seems too dark for me to use as a bronzer (even though the Buriti Bronzer is one of my favorite products).

I have gotten some nice use out of the Madeira Bronzer as an eyeshadow, though I would use it more if the container size were not so large.

Like other classic RMS products, these feel good to me and have not irritated my skin at all.

While they are not nearly as easy to apply as (say) the new RMS ReDimension Hydra Powder Blush, I have not had any problems creating a nice look with them.

This page disappeared from the Sephora website in 2022.

The description of this product reads, “A unique, clean palette of bouncy cream eyeshadows for an instant sheer wash of radiant pearl and shimmer color that melts onto the eyelid. These brilliant, innovative, and cushion-like cream-to-powder eyeshadows melt onto your lids for a second-skin feel and absolutely no fallout. Made with high levels of pearl, they deliver a naturally lustrous effect that’s never ashy or powdery. These shadows are also fragrance free and suitable for sensitive eyes and contact-lens wearers.”

This palette of six silicone-based eyeshadows seemed to me a good idea in theory, especially for the price.

While the colors look pretty in the palette, I feel that they have turned out looking rather muddy and not that attractive on my eyes.

I also don’t feel like I have ever figured out a good way to apply them and that they do not last very long.

On the plus side, I have not found this product to irritate my eyes at all.

Sephora Collection Clean Glowing Skin Foundation – $20

Performance Rating: 3 out of 5 stars (3 / 5)

Ingredients Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Lisa Irritation Level: Mild

Processed Fragrance: None

Coverage Level: Light

This product was introduced by Sephora in late 2021, but had disappeared from the Sephora website by the middle of 2022.

The description of this product reads, “This foundation will provide you with visibly radiant skin. It is enriched with matcha tea, known to provide hydration, and vitamin C derived from potato, which is known to brighten the appearance of skin. The luxurious, breathable texture easily blends and builds to your desired coverage while smoothing and evening out the look of skin. It is also suitable for sensitive skin and is fragrance free. In a clinical test, this foundation was proven to provide long-lasting wear and hydration for up to 10 hours. Light coverage. Radiant finish. Skin type, Normal and Dry.”

I found this foundation to be slightly irritating to my face, causing it to itch shortly after I applied it on several occasions.

I felt that the product looked a little powdery on my skin and that it emphasized my wrinkles somewhat.

Considering the low price point, some people may find it to be a good enough product to be worth using though.

Tarte Amazonian Clay Waterproof 12-Hour Concealer – $25

Living Clean Rating: 7 out of 10

Performance Rating: 5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

Ingredients Rating: 2 out of 5 stars (2 / 5)

Lisa Irritation Level: None

Processed Fragrance: None

Silicone Level: High

This product was discontinued in 2023.

The description of this product reads, “Full coverage, longwear, waterproof concealer that hides blemishes, redness, dark circles and more with a dab of the twist-up stick. Conceals imperfections and nourishes skin with a velvet matte finish using Amazon clay and Vitamins A and E. Creamy, blendable, waterproof formula is designed to be used without a brush, making it simple to touch up on the go.”

While this concealer stick includes a high level of silicones as well as a few other mildly problematic ingredients, the main issue that I see is that the stick includes some retinyl palmitate (a form of retinol).

Although I have been avoiding the use of retinol in general, I used this product on a number of occasions before I realized that it contained a retinol ingredient.

I did not notice the product having any negative effect on my skin, but I only used it sporadically and only on very small areas of my face.

While it may be that the amount of retinol in the product is too small to matter, I put the stick aside when I realized that learned about the presence of the retinol in the product.

I do think that this is otherwise a nice product though.

It goes on very easily and seems to look natural on my skin.

The very compact size would make it convenient to keep in my purse for use as needed.

It is available in 10 shades. I have the shade Fair-Light, which has been a good color for me.

Tarte Clay Stick Foundation – $29

♣ Living Clean Superstar

Overall Rating: 5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

Performance Rating: 5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

Ingredients Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Lisa Irritation Level: None

This product ceased being sold by Tarte in early 2022.

Although many Tarte products contain ingredients that I would prefer not to use, this foundation stick seems quite clean to me both in terms of the ingredients list and how it feels to me.

The product does contain silicone, but the amount does not seem very high.

It is a creamy foundation that goes on nicely and holds up well, with the texture and look being similar to that of my favorite foundation sticks (Bobbi Brown and Westman Atelier).

However, it seems to me that the Amazonian clay in the Tarte stick has a bit of a drying effect that is not entirely appropriate for my own very dry skin.

It’s my understanding that Tarte is a brand that primarily targets women in their 20’s and 30’s, which would explain why the product seems that it would be better for those those with normal to oily skin than it has been for me.

Another issue with this product is that due to the fact that only 12 shades total are offered, many people may not be able to get a good match.

I have tried two shades in this foundation stick – Fair Neutral and Light/Medium Neutral.

The first was much too light for my skin in general. The second was about the right shade but too pink to be ideal.

Unfortunately, there are no warmer shades available for people with fair to medium skin tones.

People with olive coloring and many of those with darker skin tones may not be able to get a good match either.

Furthermore, last I checked, this product was not listed on the Tarte website at all (but still was available through Sephora). A Tarte representative told me that the product had not been discontinued but was out of stock.

Hopefully the company does not give up on it entirely since I think it could be a very good choice for people who do not have terribly dry skin and can find a good color match.

Vapour Architect Brow Gel – $25

Living Clean Rating: 10 out of 10

Performance Rating: 5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

Ingredients Rating: 5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

Lisa Irritation Level: None

The description of this product reads, “One-step multi-tasking creamy brow gel. Tinted + flexible hold. Doesn’t stiffen or flake. Easy to apply. Fills, adds volume, shapes + sets. Creates naturally full, defined brows. Activated with Untamed Botanicals. Conditions with Cranberry + Jojoba. Grooms with Rice Bran, Sunflower Wax and Carnauba Wax. Unscented.”

This product was introduced in Summer 2022.

I feel that it has worked quite well for me, to the point that it is conceivable that it might end up being my favorite brow gel.

The product has gone on my brows very nicely, allowing me to easily darken all of my individual brow hairs without any smudging.

I’ve not noticed any irritation as a result of this product.

The ingredient list for it is especially clean, with only the titanium dioxide being cited as potentially problematic by EWG.

The Taupe Brown shade is not too dark and has worked surprisingly well for me.

However, having only three shades means that some people (especially those with more reddish hair) are not going to be able to use this product.

Considering how many brow gels I have been unable to use due to their being totally dried-out before ever being used, the main question I have about this product is how it will perform over time.

Maybe this one is just good because it is brand-new to the market and therefore fresh from the factory.

So far, though, I feel that this is a terrific brow gel that competes well with all the other products that I have tried, including the Kosas one.

I will definitely buy it again if it remains this good.

Consciously crafted sticks to take on the fly. Hydrates with Organic Sunflower Oil and calms with Frankincense, Myrrh + Lotus.  Perfect for on-the-go.”

These multi-purpose sticks from Vapour include only natural ingredients, almost all of them organic.

No artificial colors or other synthetic ingredients are used, and the product rates as quite clean according to EWG criteria.

Eight shades are currently available.

Vapour has a program that allows samples of their products to be ordered for a small fee, and so I have tried out several different shades of this product.

I think the colors that I have tried are all really pretty and am impressed that they are so attractive considering that only natural ingredients are used.

I think the products go on my skin nicely and look pretty on both my face and lips.

They have a pleasant fruity taste and smell, apparently from the fig oil.

The only concern that I have is that sunflower seed oil is listed as the first ingredient. I therefore wonder how long the product will hold up before the oil goes rancid.

I suggest making an attempt to use the product up fairly quickly rather than saving it for special occasions, therefore.

Hydrates with Olive Squalane + soothing Amino Acids. Activated with Untamed Botanicals. Rich Mineral Pigments. Nourishing, soothing Amino Acids. Hydrating, conditioning Olive-derived Squalane.”

Like most of Vapour’s products, this powder blush uses only natural coloring agents and other especially clean ingredients.

It is available in four shades – Obsess (“warm rose”), Mischief (“peachy pink”), Instinct (“cool pink”) and Smitten (“gilded pink coral”).

The Vapour website suggests Smitten as a good substitute for Nars Orgasm, and so I gave it a try.

Compared to the RMS Lost Angel and Nars Orgasm powder blush products, Smitten looks considerably more like a pure rosy pink rather than a peachy golden pink.

While I think that it looks pretty on me if I apply it sparingly with a fan brush, I tend to think that it (and the other Vapour blush colors) may be better suited to someone who likes brighter blush colors than I do.

The description of this product reads, “Endless Summer. Silky smooth vegan bronzing powder. Intuitive buildable color gives healthy luminosity. Warm up your skin with pure sun-kissed color. Apply lightly over cheeks, brow and lids for an all-over glow. Or intensify your radiance and contour for full-on definition. Hydrates with Olive Squalane + soothing Amino Acids. Looks natural. Never orange or fake.”

This bronzer has an especially clean ingredients list and is available in two shades – Eclipse (“warm golden brown”) and Equinox (“rich spicy brown”).

The color of the lighter version is about the same as that of the Westman Atelier Beauty Butter Powder Bronzer in Coup de Soleil.

Compared to the Clinique Powder Pop Flower Bronzer, the Vapour bronzer is a little less peachy-gold and a little more straightforward warm tan.

Although the Vapour bronzer has just a touch of iridescence to it, it is still matte enough for me to be able to use it on my whole face (including my forehead) to give myself some overall color.

The product seems to be quite clean and feels good to me, and the color looks natural on me.

It does contain some cornstarch, but I need to use so little of it that I don’t feel that it has been unduly drying to my skin.

During the summer months (which is mostly when I use bronzer) the cornstarch may even be a plus since it may help a little in terms of absorbing sweat.

Like the Clinique, Haus Labs, and Westman Atelier bronzers, this product is made in Italy and features an embossed design on the top of the powder.

Although the amount of product provided is less than with some of the other bronzers discussed on this page, powder bronzers tend to get used up so slowly that I doubt that this will be an issue for most people.

Clean antioxidant protection. EFA rich. Hydrates and nourishes with Organic Cocoa + Shea Butter. Antioxidant, soothing, moisturizing Cocoa Butter. Essential Fatty Acid (EFA) rich Organic Avocado + Shea Butter. Hydrating, skin-conditioning Organic Sunflower.”

This is an especially clean bronzing stick with an unusual color that I am having a hard time describing.

It almost looks like a standard rose gold shade to me, except that it seems to be a little bit more yellow and also perhaps a bit more taupe, with a definite shimmer to it.

Vapour describes the color – Simmer – on its website as a “honeyed bronze.”

The color seems like it is in the same ballpark as the Burt’s Bees stick in Bronze Splash, except this one is much more highly pigmented and a little more of a brownish-taupe rather than just pure golden bronze.

I think that perhaps this bronzer is too neutral for me. In any case, I haven’t felt that it has been ideally suited to my own skintone.

Otherwise, I think that this is a nice product that goes on smoothly and and gives a mildly shimmery look.

The ingredient list is very clean and the product has felt good on my skin, with a pleasant natural scent that I guess must be from the natural fig and natural vanilla flavor oils.

For those who are unsure if the color of the bronzer would work for them, Vapour currently offers for $6 a custom sample set of three cream products plus a $10 off coupon for any subsequent purchase.

Hydrates with Iceland Moss + Lemon Balm. Protects with Organic Green Tea. Fresh organic fruit flavors of Apricot + Fig. Nourishing Organic Jojoba Oil.”

Pretty much across the board, Vapour is known for making exceptionally clean products with almost solely natural ingredients (including natural colorants).

This lip gloss is a little different than almost all of the other items in their line, since it contains a number of “safe synthetics” as well as some artificial colors.

Still, the ingredient list looks relatively clean compared to many other lip glosses and the product feels pretty good to me.

The gloss is fairly thin and not really sticky at all. I think it goes on nicely and that it feels good on my lips.

It has a fruity type scent and flavor that, while definitely noticeable, does not bother me at all. I guess it must come from the black currant seed oil, since I am not seeing any other ingredients that seem like they would contribute this kind of flavor.

I have the color Beguile (“warm berry”), which provides a fair amount of natural-looking color that I think looks very nice on my lips.

The Vapour website describes this product as, “Lightweight. Super-fresh. Skin smoothing prep that lasts all day. Hydrates and soothes like a light moisturizer with Jojoba + Baobab. Tones and clarifies with Cranberry + Ginger. Goes with the flow to keep you balanced in both dry and humid conditions. Ideal base for foundation that locks in color and makes it last. Great for all skin types and skin tones. Pairs well with all Vapour Foundations.”

This product was introduced a little over a year ago as a more economical alternative to the Vapour Gentle Illuminating Primer.

The price is less expensive and the bottle contains significantly more product.

Although this primer contains some nice oils, it is not as moisturizing as the Gentle Illuminating Primer.

The product also seems to have a little less shimmer than the Gentle Illuminating Primer (though the shimmer of that one is pretty muted too).

This product contains denatured alcohol and citric acid, as well as sodium benzoate and some fragrance ingredients (lemon oil, citral and limonene) that may be problematic for some people.

I have just tried some samples of this product and don’t feel that my skin has been irritated by it at all.

Vapour suggests that this primer is good for all skin types and that it “feels super-fresh with a skin-smoothing effect.”

They describe the Gentle Illuminating Primer as being for those with balanced or dry skin and who want a product that “has a luminous finish that I can wear with or without foundation.”

My own skin is quite dry, and I think that I do prefer the Gentle Illuminating Primer.

Those with skin that is less dry than mine and who are looking for a sturdy product that is more reasonably priced might want to consider this one instead.

I would like to try a full-size bottle of it myself to experiment further.

Ellen’s Comments: “I like this primer a lot. Covers well, feels nice, good base for foundation.”

This product is available in four versions, each containing four shades.

I tried the Labyrinth shade (described as “chic and moody”).

I feel that the colors in this palette are pretty but that the product is rather difficult to apply.

I agree that they are pretty high-pigmented compared to most other shadows that I have tried and that I need to remember to use a light touch when using them.

The shadows do feel quite clean to me and the ingredient list looks good, though.

In addition, once I get the eyeshadow on my eyes, it seems to hold up quite well (which is not something that I necessarily would have expected from an eyeshadow palette from an especially clean-focused company).

The description of this product reads, “Dewy light and ethereal glow. Creamy + blendable vegan highlight stick. Intuitive and Multidimensional. Radiance-amplifying pure mineral pigments let your true self shine through. Wherever you want: cheeks, brow bones, cupid’s bow + shoulders. EFA rich. Hydrates and nourishes with Organic Cocoa + Shea Butter. Antioxidant, soothing, moisturizing Cocoa Butter. Essential Fatty Acid (EFA) rich Organic Avocado + Shea Butter. Hydrating, skin-conditioning Organic Sunflower.”

This is a quite creamy and moderately shimmery highlighting stick, made almost exclusively from natural ingredients.

It goes on very smoothly and creates a soft glow that I think is very pretty and appropriate for day or evening.

It has a mild scent and taste derived from citrus oil/wax, fig oil, and French vanilla flavor oil (with all of these being organic or plant-derived).

I really like this highlighter but am a little concerned about the sunflower seed oil (listed as the first ingredient) going rancid.

I do think that the sample that I got to test the product is smelling slightly off to me now (after about six months).

At least so far, the issue is trivial compared to the problem that the Merit highlighter developed, though.

The description of this product reads, “High-pigment lipstick with a modern point of view. Full coverage colors in matte and satin finishes. Feminine, confident, badass. Sultry reds to moody nudes. Intense + long lasting color. Nourishes and soothes with Organic Jojoba. Activated with untamed botanicals – nourishing, protective organic jojoba oil and hydrating, soothing sunflower oil.”

Vapour’s lipsticks contain only natural coloring agents and use a formula that seems pretty clean to me in terms of both the ingredient list and my experience with the product.

A total of 11 different shades – many of them in bright colors – are offered at present.

I tried the color Murmur, which is described as a “peachy coral satin.”

My experience with the product is that while it goes on looking quite bright and rather pretty, the color almost immediately fades to something that is much more muted and then soon after that disappears almost entirely.

I have found the formula to be slightly on the dry side and to benefit from the added use of lip primer, lip pencil and lip gloss.

I feel a little less motivated to go through all those steps with this product than I do with the MAC or RMS lipsticks though, since this one seems to have a tendency to disappear from my lips regardless of what else I do or do not put on with it.

The product has a pleasant fruity-type flavor and smell (described on the ingredient list as “plant-derived aroma/flavor”). I don’t taste any unpleasant chemical elements and the formula feels clean to me.

All in all, I think that this lipstick may be a good choice for those who know they want a bright lipstick with all-natural coloring agents.

However, I suspect that those who are used to more conventional lipsticks such as the MAC ones may become a bit frustrated with it due to the tendency for it to quickly disappear from the lips.

\I thought that all the colors looked very good on me and bought the latter in a full-size version.

The products give a pretty, juicy look to my lips and are very hydrating.

The description of this product reads, “Transcend the boundaries between skin and makeup. Contour, highlight and even skin tone. Luminizing Foundation that doubles as concealer. Breathable, lightweight and customizable light to medium coverage. Boost your inner glow. Lasting luminous finish. Hydrates with Organic Sunflower Oil and calms with Frankincense, Myrrh + Lotus.  Luminizing Foundation that acts like skincare. Perfect for on-the-go. Great for all skin types.”

This is an unusually clean foundation stick consisting only of natural ingredients, many of them organic.

I’ve found that it looks very nice on my skin, providing smooth coverage without noticeable patchiness and without calling any extra attention to my wrinkles.

Apparently as a result of both mica and skincare ingredients, the Vapour stick does give my face a glowy sort of sheen that, while very pretty, makes it fairly obvious that I am wearing some kind of makeup.

This makes it quite different than the Bobbi Brown and Westman Atelier sticks, which disappear into my skin to the point that it looks like I am wearing no makeup at all.

The “luminous” finish of the Vapour stick does look rather current since many makeup products that are designed to provide that exact kind of glowy look are very popular at the moment.

For those who would prefer a more matte finish, a little dusting of powder seems effective at reducing the sheen to the point that it is not as obvious.

According to the Vapour website, this foundation stick provides light to medium coverage. as well as calming and hydrating skincare benefits.

A few natural ingredients – including fig flavor oil and frankincense oil – that seem designed to provide a fragrance are included. Personally, I have found the vaguely fruity scent to be light and pleasant.

A total of 19 shades are available.

Those who are unsure of which shades might work for them may order three generously sized samples for $8 from the Vapour website (and also will receive a discount code for $10 off a future Vapour purchase).

I tried 112L (“very light, yellow undertones”), 115L (“light, neutral undertones”) and 117L (“light, yellow undertones”).

While all three of these shades seem that they would be acceptable for me, the latter seems to have been the best match for me, especially in summer.

Or layer on top of eyeshadow, blush or lipstick for a dewy pop. Calms with organic lemon balm. Rejuvenates with organic helichrysum and calendula flowers.”

The stick is available in two shades – a somewhat cool brown (Hush) and a slightly darker/redder brown (Enchant). I have found both shades to look very nice on my lips and also to provide some natural-looking shading on my cheeks.

The product includes organic and natural flavors from figs, plums and apricots. I have found the smell and taste to be quite appealing.

The ingredient list looks really good to me, and I also feel good about it based on my experiences with it.

While I don’t use enough of this product to provide much hydration to my cheeks, I do think that it feels nicely moisturizing on my lips.

I have felt like using the Enchant version is enough of a blush for me for most occasions and that it looks nicer on me than using most regular cream blush products (since those are usually too bright for me).

Others may want to use these sticks to give some definition to their face and then finish it off with some regular blush.

I’ve been using this product frequently and can see myself purchasing it again in the future.

That foundation causes substantial itching if I use it directly on my skin, apparently due to the inclusion of substantial amounts of several different essential oils.

Wearing this primer seems to put enough of a barrier between my skin and the foundation that the itching issue does not occur.

While some other silicone-free primers also have worked for this purpose, I have liked this one the most because it feels good on my skin.

Even if I am not wearing foundation, my skin seems to look a little better when I have this primer on – just slightly smoother and healthier.

So far it hasn’t been enough of a difference that I have worn it very often without makeup over it, but I can see why people might want to do that.

I have used most of a bottle of this product and never have felt that it was anything but good for my skin.

Probably I will buy more of it in the future.

Ellen’s Comments: “Iridescent primer. Smell is a bit strong for me.”

Overall Rating: 5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

Lisa Irritation Level: None

Processed Fragrance: Myrrh Oil, Bergamot Oil

Foundation Type: Oil-Based

Coverage Level: Light/Medium

The description of this product reads, “Skin-honoring foundation with a radiant glow. Adjustable light-to-medium coverage. Get endless compliments on your skin (not your makeup). Flawless skin with a truly super-natural finish. Soothes and calms with Frankincense, Myrrh + Lotus. Foundation that acts like skincare.”

Unlike many of the foundations that I have tried, this product does feel really good on my skin and seems to make it more calm after it has been irritated by other products.

The product has been easy to apply and seems to dry down more quickly than some of the other oil-based foundations that I have tried.

However, I feel like the wax in the formula has a tendency to make it look a bit patchy (especially in areas like around my nose) and that this issue tends to get worse as the day goes on.

In addition, the mica in the formula gives it a bit of a sheen that does not look entirely natural to me.

I have found that this product seems to work better when finished off with setting powder. The powder tones down the shine from the oils and the mica considerably, leaving a soft matte finish that looks much more natural and rather pretty.

Even with the powder, this foundation should not be expected to provide the sort of bulletproof polished look that those who are used to using silicone-based foundations may be wanting.

Nonetheless, it has been one of my own most frequently used “go-to” foundations due to the fact that it seems especially beneficial for my skin and looks pretty nice on me.

I have tried the shades 112S (“very light, yellow undertones”), 115S (“light, neutral undertones”) and 117S (“light, yellow undertones”). I thought that all three shades worked okay for me but that the ones with the yellow undertones seemed a bit better.

About This Website

The Living Clean in a Dirty World shopping website is designed to provide guidance to those seeking out products that are relatively low in toxicity and that provide generally positive user experiences.

Although the skincare and makeup sections have a particular focus on products appropriate for women who are in their 40’s or beyond, the information provided may be useful for other people as well.

The products are curated by Lisa Petrison, who has been focused on helping people to improve their health by avoiding toxicity since 2008 and who heads the Paradigm Change organization.

Her Living Clean in a Dirty World blog site discusses a variety of topics of relevance to those who are working to pursue a more natural lifestyle with less exposure to harmful toxicity.

Lisa is the author of several books, including A Beginner’s Guide to Mold Avoidance (co-written with Erik Johnson).

She also runs the Paradigm Change website (focusing on issues related to toxic mold illness) and the Mold Avoiders Facebook group (designed for the discussion of all topics of interest to those pursuing the mold avoidance approach described in the “Beginner’s Guide” book).

Lisa was born in August 1964 and has yet to try cosmetic surgery, Botox or other cosmetic treatments requiring interactions with a physician, or beauty products containing retinoids.

In her former life, Lisa worked as a business school professor, as a marketing consultant to a variety of large companies, and as a reporter covering the advertising industry.

She holds a Ph.D. in marketing and social psychology from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University as well as B.S./M.S. degrees from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern.

Lisa would like to extend a special note of appreciation to Ellen Kleiman-Redden for her help in trying out products and discussing issues related to this project.

She also would like to thank the many members of the Mold Avoiders community who have shared suggestions of products to be included here.

A Note From Lisa

Products that I have tried or researched and that I have not found to be acceptable from a toxicity standpoint have been omitted entirely from the discussions on this website.

However, since a goal of this project is to introduce people to a range of options in terms of price and functionality, some products discussed on this site include ingredients that may not be appropriate for everyone.

It’s my hope that all individuals making their way to this site will find at least a few options from each product category that meet all of their own needs and wants from a variety of perspectives.

The vast majority of cosmetics marketers now offer affiliate programs in which Internet content creators may earn commissions if people who are referred to the companies’ sites by clicking on links end up making purchases.

I participate in quite a few individual affiliate programs as well as in the Sovrn/Viglinks program (which automatically converts regular links into revenue-generating links).

Links on this page that may result in affiliate income may include – but are not necessarily limited to – those from the following companies: Credo, Honest, Ilia, Item Beauty, Lawless, MAC, Milk Makeup, PYT, Sephora, Smashbox, Ulta, W3LL People, Youthforia.

Reader comments about products discussed on this website are very welcome.

Thoughts may be shared either by posting them in the comments section at the bottom of this page or by sending them directly to me at the following email address:

Companies that would like to offer me complimentary products to try out may contact me at this address as well.
